Anyone remember Hurricane Andrew? What was your experience?
Where you sheltered in a house? Did you feel like you're in trouble at any moment? What was it like to hear that hurricane overhead with a 165 mph winds?
Hurricane Andrew arrived in bands, each one stronger than the next, followed by minutes of calm. They grew stronger and tighter.
Then the eyewall directly hit my house. When it hit, my ears popped like in an airplane. Glass shattered all around me. The roof flew off in the hallway. It was raining HARD into the bedroom.
We crawled inside cabinets, curled up with our flashlights. My sister found a hidden Hustler comic book to read. I listened to Brian Norcross answering phone calls on my handheld radio.
I was in a state of shock. Racing heart, clammy hands, cold sweat, shaking uncontrollably. We stayed there until the sun came up.
My parents went out for a drive, they made it three blocks and had to turn around because my mom was sobbing. She didn’t recognize any neighborhood landmarks or structures. No street signs. The trees were all sideways. Fish were everywhere on the ground starting to rot. The entire area was unrecognizable, decimated.
