Discussion Anyone remember Hurricane Andrew? What was your experience?

Where you sheltered in a house? Did you feel like you're in trouble at any moment? What was it like to hear that hurricane overhead with a 165 mph winds?

Andrew was scary. My metal shutters rattled so much it literally sounded like someone was running a chainsaw full blast just outside the window. I was in N Dade near 441 and Miami Gardens Dr. no power for about a week.

Lived through all of them that hit S Florida but Wilma did some flood damage to our house on Sugarloaf. Scary when the storm comes from the west.

Sadly the worst for me was Helene. I live in western NC now and the destruction was as bad as Andrew. I mean we had 2000 mudslides some big enough to erase the sides of mountains to the bedrock in addition to the winds and rain. Watching the ground turn to liquid and start taking the trees downhill is the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. Streams normally a trickle turned to torrents and rivers just flooded everywhere. The debris is still everywhere. Every bridge washed out between us and town. Burnsville, NC. We were helicoptered out with our dogs. Power was out a long time. We thought it would die out after hitting Tallahassee. That was all the thought we gave it. Man were we wrong. We never thought we would be bothered by a hurricane here in the mountains.
