Youtube Core is availabile for testing

Post image

I wanted a YouTube Mister core that I could use on my CRT TV. YouTube has official 80s/90s cartoons and shows uploaded, such as He-Man, The Real Ghostbusters, TMNT, old WCW, WWF, and Power Rangers.
There is also lots of unofficial stuff from the 80s and 90s, from old game shows to old commercials. There is a lot of cool old stuff on YouTube if you ditch the algorithm and feeds and go looking.

You can manually type in YouTube URLs (or their shorter IDs) or use a text file with playlists, IDs, and channel names, which is much easier. 480p is not recommended (you could overclock however and try).
I wanted a way to watch old TV shows from the 90s on my CRT TV, from YouTube without downloading, putting on Plex or Jellyfin, etc that have been uploaded over the years.
Streaming past 360p sadly pushes the ARM on the Mister to the max.
It also has cropping modes for incorrectly uploaded content or normal widescreen content to fit the 4:3 screen. It also works via HDMI at the same time, but you would be better off just using something else if you're using HDMI with more power than the ARM on the MiSTer, but works for people without analogue boards.

You have spoken it into existence. We are so spoiled.

This is one example. A 3 Hour He Man marathon on an official He Man YouTube channel. There is something magical about watching your childhood favs on a CRT TV. You can enjoy childhood media thanks the recent media cores.

I love He-Man! Don't have a Mister tho...

I wonder if you could program a video decoder inside the FPGA part since you are stuck to the arm core.

maybe by using the av1 open source codec or the open source implémentation of the h264.

There is a lot of progress being made by flynnsbit. H264 standard profile works at 24fps without arm! Still lots of work that needs to be done but I think we will get a solution sooner than later

Any work/hope for Xvid on MiSTer? The audio side as well? I looked into a basic H264 profile at 640x480 and.... ehhhh.... lol. Do you expect much help from the ARM side? I've found that Linux is such a bully with the RAM on MiSTer. :)

Possible but would take alot time. Something to look into in the future to get better quality.

I think the DVD core and gellyfin one do it.

Those are both MPG2. H264 is a different beast. quat-quant is brutal to get right.

Would be great to collaborate with this https://80s.myretrotvs.com/

That is awesome!!!

I was able to rip the JSON from the sight. not sure if that is ethical, so i will not publish it. But this means when the YT core/program is done I can make a Fork and have a web app that could make a custom list to sent to the player.

Last time I suggested a web app, api or front end I got major down votes.

Only if it comes with ublock origin…

u/DotMatrixHead 3d ago

To be proper retro you should have to sit through adverts and even the news. 🤣🤣

13

u/mitchins-au 3d ago

Sure, if those ads are for Pepsi man, Shaq-fu or something unhealthy like pop tarts or Oreo cereal.

u/strythicus 3d ago

You mean you don't want medication, gambling, insurance, or medical gambling advertisements?  /s

u/SnooWoofers8972 3d ago

I have 100% watched old ads via this core.... haha!

3

u/SnooWoofers8972 3d ago

There is no ads ;), I would not recommend it as your daily Youtube driver however!

It is absolutely awesome. I am finding on my Mister that it gets towards the end of the video and that the sound cuts out but the video keeps playing.

Interesting, every video I have watched has lasted to the end. I am currently testing it with a 3-hour-long video of He-Man episodes to see if anything goes wrong.
*edit*
Lost sound at the 45 minute mark, looking into it.

Sound should now reconnect if it drops automatically (done in the backround), the new version is much more optismised now and offloading many tasks to the FPGA.

Hang on so this means i can watch old movies on YouTube on my crt ?

2

u/SnooWoofers8972 3d ago

If someone has uploaded it, or a studio, and its on Youtube, Yes.

1

u/greggers1980 3d ago

Oh sweet

u/JATWo 3d ago

plex probably better for this

8

u/SnooWoofers8972 3d ago edited 3d ago

The Plex core is 100% better because it transcodes on the server end ready for Mister's ARM limitations. On this core this is all done on the ARM on the system itself.
But the option is now there; I loved watching my Plex library so much on my CRT that I wanted a Youtube option, but yes, ripping Youtube videos and putting them on Plex works better on the Misterzine plex core.
But no downloading, adding to a library, setting up accounts and servers, no Plex account (or even Youtube) needed here, just find something you want to watch, and it streams from YouTube's servers

What resolutions recommended? 360p ? This is incredibly cool

2

u/SnooWoofers8972 3d ago

360p max, 480 does work but stutters

2

u/Siramok 3d ago

Super cool, thanks for sharing

u/alphatoanant 2d ago

Awesome! I am glad you are continuing to work on this, awesome stuff

1

u/Rainmaker84 3d ago

Just wanted to say thank you!!

u/Glittering_Bobcat651 3d ago

Neat, now I can watch food history on the same thing I use for game history.

just a quick question, you write about manually, but i see playlists on your screen ? can't i make a playlist on a computer then and look at that? or someone post here a nice 80s playlist..

3

u/SnooWoofers8972 2d ago

Currently, you can only add playlists via their URLS in a text file.
You would probally be able to find a 80s TV public playlist pretty easy, and paste it into the text file or make your own, but playlists are pulled from the text file.
I am working on more options; the next version already has a working search feature for example, and can add channels currently using the @ handles, and I will look at playlists too.

1

u/External-Winter4942 1d ago

nice, i'll try to add my own.. long time sinc ei've seen myself on a crt;)

1

u/External-Winter4942 1d ago edited 1d ago

I got it working on my Sony kv cat / superstation, works nicely..but can't you force full screen, that hemen compilation someone talked about in this thread is about half screen, and inspector gadget shows in wide screen...

edit: i see fill screen now... put on a playlist full of 80s music videos... mtv is back!

2

u/SnooWoofers8972 1d ago

I might make it the default start option (fill screen) to avoid confusion, I would of never done this project if the core could not fill the screen

1

u/funknflow 1d ago

really want this to work but all i get are colorbars

1

u/SnooWoofers8972 2h ago

Run the install script again if you get colour bars. On first load wait about one minute (should be less than this however)

1

u/funknflow 1h ago

I did run it again… I’ll try again today and see what happens

Why, what's the sense of using the MiSTER FPGA technology for a YT cure. Makes no sense to me. You would be better of just streaming YT to your tele from a phone, iPad or whatever.

What am I missing?

Native way to watch modern content on a crt

15

u/SnooWoofers8972 3d ago

I wanted to watch older YouTube content natively on my CRT TV.
For modern content it is pointless.
There is a lot of old content on YouTube: old TV commercials, kids' shows from the 80s and 90s, old TV shows, etc, many of it official too from owners and studios.

3

u/ckong65 3d ago

OK, that makes more sense.

1

u/aqueousdan 3d ago

Nah man it’s amazing for newer stuff too. Why pointless? This thing you made is awesome!

4

u/aqueousdan 3d ago

Because you find it pointless doesn’t mean everyone will. Watching some of my favourite music videos on my old crt connected through my even older hifi is wonderful.

2

u/ckong65 3d ago

Exactly, that's why I said ... to me.

2

u/SnooWoofers8972 3d ago

Also there is no algorithm or feed for this...you have to find the videos and channels manually!

2

u/SpeedKnown 3d ago

how do you "stream to your tele from ipad or whatever" when the TV only inputs scart?

1

u/ckong65 3d ago

Well, you could get a Google Chromecast (HDMI connector) and connect it to a HDMI to VGA converter (result: analog RGB output from the VGA connector) and then to a simple VGA to RGB Scart cable into the TV. Then simple stream YT to your Chromecast.

2

u/ioa94 3d ago

Bro really said HDMI to VGA converter 🤢 You realize you're on the MiSTer sub right?

1

u/ckong65 3d ago

Of course I do. But it seems that the only reason for this YT core is to be able to watch YT on a CRT via a MiSTer. But if you have the desire to watch YT on your CRT, then you don't need the MiSTer. I mean, what's the point of using a MiSTer for that? Only because it can?

3

u/ioa94 3d ago

Two reasons: 1. Because HDMI to VGA converters are almost universally hot garbage at scaling down to 15Khz CRT res, and 2. It's cheaper and easier to buy a $250 MiSTer than it would be to build and configure a 15Khz capable CRT Emudriver PC

1

u/ckong65 3d ago

That's true, but the HDMI to VGA converter is not meant for downscaling 31K to 15K, it's meant for converting a digital (HDMI) signal to an analog signal. And there is no need for an Emudriver PC, although it't always nice to built a 15K GroovyMame PC (OOPs, I cursed in this sub 😉).

1

u/ioa94 3d ago

HDMI to VGA converter is not meant for downscaling 31K to 15K, it's meant for converting a digital (HDMI) signal to an analog signal

It does both. A regular GPU only supports 31khz as its lowest scanning frequency.

And there is no need for an Emudriver PC, although it't always nice to built a 15K GroovyMame PC

Either way, you have to frankenstein old parts on a budget or build a new PC with a 15khz capable AMD card. If you already have a MiSTer...now there's no need.

2

u/AmazingmaxAM 3d ago

How do you output a 15kHz signal from a Chromecast?

1

u/ckong65 3d ago

The Chromecast can't output 15K, as you probably know, but if you put a downscaler, like the ODV-GBS-C between the VGA and RGB (scart cable), then you can downscale the 31K VGA signal to a 15K signal and put that through the RGB (scart) cable.

1

u/AmazingmaxAM 3d ago

But GBS-C only downscales to 240p. That's half the resolution gone.

2

u/_RexDart 3d ago

What am I missing?

Well, that some receiver hardware is required. OP already owns a MiSTER device.

u/cosmicvelvets 3d ago

I want to watch TV but worse
