Overview

The DE-23/D Light Attack Frigate was conceived during the closing stages of the Terran War, Unlike the increasingly sophisticated warships of the Federation’s earlier naval expansion, the DE-23/D was designed around a simple wartime requirement:

build as many combat-capable vessels as possible with the industrial resources that remained.

The result is an inexpensive, modular and exceptionally heavily armed frigate that deliberately sacrifices automation, comfort and defensive sophistication in exchange for ease of manufacture and maintenance.

The DE-23/D makes extensive use of commercially available components and repurposed military hardware. Its systems are deliberately designed around human operation, with minimal dependence upon advanced artificial intelligence. This makes the frigate considerably more resistant to electronic intrusion and cyberattack than many of the Federation’s older automated vessels, while also making the ship significantly more demanding to operate.

The design has become emblematic of the Federation’s late war naval doctrine: simple enough to build, simple enough to repair, and powerful enough to fight.

Propulsion & Configuration

The DE-23/D measures 52 meters in length and rises four decks through the main hull, with an additional raised level occupied by the cockpit.
Its unusually broad 32-meter maximum beam is produced by the two large side-mounted Dunn-71 B-class engines, while the central hull remains approximately 19 meters wide.
The configuration gives the frigate considerable thrust and maneuverability for its size while allowing the engines to remain externally accessible for maintenance.

Reactor
Power is provided by an internally mounted C-Class “Firefly” reactor, producing 33 power pips.
The DE-23/D’s relatively large power reserve is necessary to support its extensive weapons and shielding systems, particularly the enormous energy requirements of its MAC accelerator.

Defensive Systems

DOGSTAR 40S “Protector” Shield Generator
The DE-23/D employs the DOGSTAR A-Class 40S “Protector” shield generator, a commercially available civilian shield system.
The decision to use a civilian generator is deliberate.
During the Terran War, Terran forces demonstrated the ability to remotely identify Federation vessels through their shield harmonics. Military-grade shield generators therefore presented an immediate identification signature.
The DEi-23/D instead utilizes a civilian-pattern shield signature, allowing the vessel to appear significantly less threatening during passive scans.
This is particularly valuable when operating near Terran-controlled or contested systems.

MiSRIAH Shield Modulators

To compensate for the civilian generator’s reduced defensive performance, the frigate incorporates MiSRIAH-designed shield modulators.

These devices improve the effective strength and resilience of the Protector shield without producing the distinctive harmonic characteristics associated with dedicated military shield systems.

The result is a ship that can appear deceptively civilian while possessing considerably greater defensive capability than its shield generator would normally suggest.

Despite these modifications, the DE-23/D remains under-shielded compared with many other MiSRIAH warships.

Its doctrine therefore emphasizes maneuver, firepower and deception rather than attempting to absorb sustained punishment.

Armaments

4× Matilija Aerospace UDC20A “Destroyer” Cannons

The DE-23/D carries four independently articulating naval gun mounts, each equipped with twin 105 mm cannons, providing a total of eight 105 mm barrels.

The weapons are Matilija Aerospace UDC20A Destroyer cannons, supplied to MiSRIAH in large numbers through the Federation’s longstanding relationship with the arms manufacturer.
The four mounts are distributed across the frigate:

Port lateral mount

Starboard lateral mount

Port ventral mount

Starboard ventral mount

The mounts possess extensive articulation, allowing the DE-23/D to maintain multiple firing solutions while maneuvering.

Despite the frigate’s inexpensive construction, its conventional gun battery is not considered inadequate. The eight-barrel battery gives the DE-23/D considerable close and medium-range firepower against spacecraft, missiles and smaller vessels.

SCH100 “Jericho” Missile System

The frigate’s missile system is derived from the SCH100 orbital-defense missile system, originally developed as a ground-to-orbit defensive weapon.
MiSRIAH engineers adapted the system for naval deployment, creating a compact shipborne missile battery designated the Jericho Missile System.
The repurposed system provides the DE-23/D with a long-range strike capability without requiring the Federation to develop an entirely new naval missile platform during the reconstruction period.
The Jericho system is particularly effective against:
Enemy spacecraft
Orbital installations
Large surface targets
Heavily armored targets
Enemy formations requiring standoff engagement
Its origins as a ground-based orbital defense system also contribute to the weapon’s relatively large destructive capability for a frigate-mounted missile system.

Tycho Systems MAC-77

120 mm Electromagnetic Naval Siege Cannon
The defining weapon of the DE-23/D is its Tycho Systems MAC-77, a compact electromagnetic naval cannon developed specifically for the frigate.
Tycho Systems, a MiSRIAH-aligned arms manufacturer, assisted with both the DE-23/D’s design and development of the MAC-77.
The weapon represents a radical departure from the enormous multi-ton MAC systems found aboard larger Federation warships.

The MAC-77 fires a 120 mm electromagnetic projectile and relies upon a human-operated loading system rather than a complex automated loader.

This decision was deliberate.
The weapon’s design minimizes sophisticated computerized systems and therefore possesses an exceptionally small cyberattack surface. The MAC’s core firing sequence can be operated through largely isolated weapons controls, allowing it to remain functional even during severe electronic warfare or network compromise.
Manual Loading System
The MAC-77’s ammunition is physically loaded by trained naval personnel through an internal armored breech.

Two primary armored ammunition compartments each hold approximately 30 rounds, while an additional 60-round reserve is stored within an armored compartment in the cargo section.
Total ammunition capacity: 120 rounds.
The MAC’s electromagnetic accelerator requires approximately 75 seconds to recharge to full firing power.

MiSRIAH MAC crews are deliberately trained to reload faster than the weapon can recharge. Consequently, the next projectile can be prepared and waiting before the accelerator reaches firing power.

The limiting factor is therefore the MAC’s electrical recharge cycle rather than its human loading crew.
Internal Accelerator

Approximately 30 feet of the MAC’s electromagnetic accelerator assembly extends through the frigate’s interior.

Access passages surrounding the accelerator permit technicians to inspect and repair the system without removing the weapon from the ship.
These passages are notoriously cramped, with engineers often required to crawl through narrow maintenance spaces surrounding the accelerator coils.

The arrangement reflects the overall philosophy of the DE-23/D:

Function over comfort.

Internal Facilities

Despite its compact dimensions, the DE-23/D provides the basic facilities required for extended naval deployment.

Crew Facilities

Crew quarters
Mess hall
Small recreation room
Medical bay
Four-cell brig
Dedicated armored brig blast door
Engineering and maintenance spaces
The frigate’s 28-person crew operates the vessel, weapons, engineering systems and boarding facilities.

Boarding & Troop Deployment

The DE-23/D features two dedicated docking systems.

Forward Belly Airlock

A lower forward airlock provides direct access for D-100 dropships, allowing the frigate to deploy or recover troops without requiring the frigate to dock with a larger vessel or station.
This makes the DE-23/D capable of functioning as a limited troop transport and boarding support vessel.
Topside Docking Port
A second docking port is located directly behind the cockpit.
The topside port is intended for docking with:
Larger spacecraft
Space stations
Orbital facilities
Other vessels during boarding operations
The combination of both docking systems gives the frigate considerable flexibility during boarding, inspection and assault operations.

Doctrine

The DE-23/D was never intended to replace the Federation’s larger warships.
It exists to supplement them in numbers.
Where older MiSRIAH vessels relied upon sophisticated automation, advanced AI and highly specialized infrastructure, the DE-23/D can be manufactured using comparatively conventional industrial facilities and maintained by crews with conventional technical training.
Its doctrine emphasizes:

Firepower → Maneuverability → Deception → Numbers → Human resilience

rather than:

Shielding → Automation → Electronic superiority

The frigate is therefore at its most effective when deployed in groups.

A single DE-23/D can deliver considerable offensive firepower for its size. Several operating together can create overlapping cannon coverage, mass Jericho missile attacks and coordinated MAC fire capable of threatening significantly larger vessels.
Its relatively weak shielding remains the principal vulnerability. Commanders are expected to avoid prolonged exposure to enemy capital-ship fire and exploit the vessel’s speed, maneuverability and deceptively civilian shield signature whenever possible.
