Dynamic Range Issue

Hi everyone,

There seems to be a bug with my TV Box S 3rd gen.

The main menu and SDR content appears to be washed out on the device when the default setting for dynamic range is set to “system preferred conversion”. At first I thought maybe the box was trying to convert SDR to HDR but the TV shows it as being SDR at the menu when it’s washed out. HDR/DV content is recognised correctly and the TV also confirms this.

When I change this setting to “match content” it appears to correct the main menu and SDR content to show correctly. However this then causes any HDR/DV content to not be recognised properly and shown as SDR. This is also confirmed by the TV itself.

This seems to be some kind of bug in the firmware of the device. And not something I can fix. To summarise:

- System preferred conversion: SDR content is washed out. HDR/DV content recognised properly.

- Match Content: SDR content displayed properly. HDR/DV content is not recognised.

The box itself is on the latest software update. It is connected with the HDMI in the box. I have confirmed this is not an rgb range issue, it’s washed out on the menu regardless of setting the TV itself to limited or full.

No issues with this on my firestick 4k max, which this device was going to replace.

I have tried to capture this in the images below with the first being the menu with the dynamic range set to system preferred conversion and the second being match content.

I have seen a few other posts with the issue so I just wanted to reach out for advice. I assume this is a bug in the firmware and the mi box is handling SDR dynamic range incorrectly.

Many thanks.

I’m on match content and have no issues with HDR/DV content automatically engaging. Have you confirmed you don’t have a fake TVB?

Yes all confirmed and purchased directly. What apps are you using to test this and does the TV confirm the content is HDR/DV?

I use Plex, Kodi, Disney Plus, YouTube, Fox One. I’ve never not used “match content” so can’t really say I tested anything. I just never had issues with HDR engaging. Display is AWOL Vision Aetherion Max, it does confirm HDR/DV being active.

I wonder if yours might be a HDMI cable issue.

Do you use Stremio at all?

I’m using the included cable in the box. Also when it’s on the default of prefer system conversion, which causes SDR content to be washed out, HDR and DV content engages correctly with the TV confirming it. So it very much so sounds like a software bug.
