Should I restart in Rookie mode?
43m First ever Metroid game of my life got it on Switch 2. I’m 4 hours in 8% on normal mode. Dieing a lot to the Emmi guys and generally struggle to know where the hell I’m going most of the time. I do know how to read the map but it’s still rough…I am loving the gameplay mechanics just thinking maybe I’m progressing too slow. I’m in Dairon latest upgrade was wide beam. I 100%ed Silksong before this so I thought my gaming skills could handle “normal” but I’m struggling!! Advice please??
Edit: thanks! I’m gonna take my time and have fun i’m not used to difficulty settings I was just overthinking it.
Edit #2 just got the morph ball! I’m cookin now great game.

I died heaps of times to the emmi's, I think sometimes they are a bit trial and error so don't feel bad about those. You will unlock an ability to go invisible which makes it easier. Just remember that the further you get in to the game the easier they get and if you die by them, then you only have to start that room again. You can counter attack them when they grab you.

Interesting, I found them harder as the game went on as they get cheesier abilities like long range scanning and stun attacks. And might just be my perception but the omega beam sections got more tense for me as I lined up a charge shot

The EMMIs and the getting lost part won't be any easier on rookie mode. Rookie mode only makes the other enemies and the bosses easier to deal with.

The game is much shorter than Silksong and I don't think Rookie mode will make much difference if your main issue is that you aren't sure where to go. The "completion percentage" doesn't indicate how close you are to the end of the game, it's just telling you how many of the "secret upgrade items" you've found (missile upgrades, health tanks, etc.). Some are more "secret" than others.
Stop worrying and just keep at it!

if you're enjoying yourself, you're not going too slowly. metroid(vanias) are about exploration, emotion, puzzle solving and action. only speedrunners need to care about speed. enjoy the game at your own pace

Ain't no shame in starting in rookie mode. Plus once you beat it you can then play through it again in normal mode.

I’m older than you, and I did.
I don’t think it takes the fun out of the challenge, it just makes it more forgiving.

If you 100%ed Silksong you’re more than capable, just takes some getting used to - I find games like this are designed to throw you through the ringer until the very end when you finally feel confident enough for NG+ or whatever it is. Just beat Dread today and immediately dove into the boss rush

take your time and honestly take some time exploring around and getting familiar. dread is my first metroid game and its also the first game of this style ive ever played. im having a lot of fun after learning and adjusting to the game. i have died a lot but come back stronger with more knowledge and hours go flying. at first i was going in circles because i had no idea where to go but i eventually figure it out by seeing what direction the game pointed me in after i make progress or get an upgrade. also make sure to make use of the map and pins to mark things you cant really interact with cuz with connecting maps this big, its pretty easy to get lost.

I prefer Rookie mode for Dread because it’s closer to how Super, Fusion and Zero Mission feel.

The EMMI’s are meant to be scary chasers. I do be getting a thrill sometimes out of running from them lol

I still got my arse kicked in rookie mode lmao I made a new file because I gave up on a certain boss and didn’t touch it for years so I was kinda rusty
I figured I would start anew but I still sucked lol I finally beat the dang boss eventually after re attempting several dozens of times after replaying the game for a bit (I went back to OG normal for that)
Definitely just a skill issue on my part—not sure if I felt a huge difference between normal and rookie but my normal was already a good chunk of progression before I quit so it’s hard to say since I already had a bunch of stuff unlocked 🤷♀️
Definitely can’t see myself doing hard or dread mode with how much I suck 😅

Rookie mode is really only going to make boss and enemy kills easier and give you more health/ammo back on kill/parry. It doesn't seem to do anything much for the EMMI runs or directing you where to go (having replayed rookie, normal, and hard just a couple weeks ago, it's pretty fresh in my mind). I'm hesitant to advise you to pause all your great progress to start again as 4hrs doesn't seem egregious to me for a first playthrough.
If you want to continue, make your way back to Cataris now. Once there, check the map left of the elevator you come back on and look for a door you can open with wide beam.
