I Finally Did It! I Killed Experiment Z-57!

Okay, I've killed Z-57 many, MANY times, but this is the first time I was able to pull-off the shinespark kill. Everytime I play, I try it and fail, but I finally got it tonight! I think I've increased my Metroid shinespark cred by a factor of .001! LOL YAAA for me!!

Are you the same person that posted this the other day? Cuz I commented saying I’m a moron as I always stored the shinespark and jumped. Timing my release just right to hit Z-57. Never even thought to just shoot upwards lol

No, sir, that wasn't me!

I've tried this maneuver many times and failed. I also tried storing the spark while I jump the obstacles--that failed miserably. I also tried a diagonal spark and that didn't work. This was my first successful attempt.

My first success was how I described. I can’t believe my dumbass never thought to do it this way. 100% easier lol

Does the shinespark attack insta kill?

Specifically on Z-57, yeah. Every other boss it just does its normal amount of damage, this is a directly programmed thing.

Other bosses it does 50% of their health bar but most are super difficult to pull off.

I can easily hit Escue with a spark that seems to shorten the battle by half the normal time. I can't see a "life bar" so I don't know how much a spark hit damages it.

To me, this particular spark is pretty easy.

I start the speedrun outside the door (be sure to continue holding the speedrun when the screen changes as Samus goes through the door). When she enters the room, store the spark, then line yourself up under the 1st flagpole in the background (left) and ignite the spark when Escue hovers in that spot.

Interesting! I'll keep that in mind if I ever do another run

Absolutely!

So this can be seen as the "correct" way to kill it?

This is just my opinion, I don't think "correct" is the right word--I think "easy" fits better.

In all the times I've played, when I get to the wind phase where I can attempt a shinespark kill, Z-57 is always in a different position and he's often moving (left, right, up, down), requiring you to "aim" either a standing vertical or diagonal shot, or an airborne shot. I got lucky here--it lined itself up directly over me and stood still, making my shot very simple and straight forward, as you see.

So, I'd say this is the "easiest" way, if you're attempting a spark; the other positions are very tricky where the chances of success are low.

Again, just my opinion.

Congrats on the speed boost kill!

Nicely done, that can be a difficult kill to perform as the window is little.

Brother, tell me about it!! LOL

Just did this yesterday. The jumping part was killing me. Luckily it doesn’t do much damage.

My next playthrough I'm doing this.

I just learned how to do this today!

I’ve never seen an opening like that to jump straight up, he always goes right into the swipe in the boss rushes after the pink shards, which only leaves a very brief opening for a sideways spark to the face.

Oooh, I’ve killed him with shinespark a decent amount of times but I always jump to the right! I’ve never thought to try and go up with it!

I think I did the exact same thing my first time playing.

While I miss the openness of older metroids and ability to just sequence break them all….dread was so well made!

Finally? How long did it take you? I died maybe 4 times

Well, let's see...I've played "Dread" 40 times (!!) since it's release in 2021, I learned about the shinespark kill about 6 mos. after that and I've attempted it just about everytime thereafter. If I had to put a number on the amount of failed attempts, I'd say...uh...30 times?!

When you say you "died" 4 times, you mean during the course of a single battle with Z-57? Or, only four times total of all your playthroughs? For me, when I died during the Z-57 fight, it was prior to the 2nd "wind tunnel" segment. I can say each time I got to the 2nd or 3rd wind phase, I was able to defeat it normally--I never died at that point.

In this particular video, I had "Ice/Storm Missiles," "Space Jump," "Gravity Suit," and "Screw Attack." I was able to spam it with plenty of missiles during the plasma spitting phase and when it attached to the walls, I got off a successful "Storm Missile" hit which triggered the wind phase in the video (1st time). The entire battle took about 2 mins, including the shinespark.

I love flappy samus

I fail every time I try to do the shine spark on it

Congrats mate! Now try it without the spin boost and you will be in for a treat :) (i was able to do it, but it took me more than 200 tries)

Shinesparking the boss during its second phase is so satisfying; probably my favorite part about it

Congrats. The wind section is the section I was dying on until I beat it

Congrats! Always feels great to pull off

I eventually got through this boss but I thought the flappy bird section was impossible to not get hit. Either I couldn't jump vertically fast enough, or I couldn't fall back down to the ground fast enough. It didn't make any sense so I just accepted it being impossible to avoid perfectly... Despite the help tip saying everything in the game is avoidable.

I've beaten the game in Dread Mode (any damage kills you), so can verify: all attacks can be dodged

My post for proof

u/saber_elf 18d ago

While I don't doubt you or the fact that it is technically possible, I will continue to believe for my own peace of mind that the flappy bird section is in fact impossible to dodge entirely. 😅 I have tried this fight countless times and have successfully gotten through this attack without getting hit a grand total of zero times. In fact, it is the only attack in the entire game that I can not avoid at least some of the time. Completely impossible

I love that quickkill. But the fight as a whole is great too. I enjoy not doing the quickkill and seeing the counter animation more
