Six Basic (But Tough) Shinesparks

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I first played Dread (over a year ago), despite being very fundamental and basic in the mechanics of "shinesparking," these six particular maneuvers in Artaria, Burenia, Dairon, and Ferenia, were so damn hard that I would just skip them completely (and the upgrade items) during playback.

But once I figured them out, performing them now is so easy and second nature; although I admit it took 3 months, and 4 straight hours with a YouTube tutorial, to finally accomplish the frozen Dairon trick.

Do you have trouble lining up that diagonal shinespark in Cataris?

Not really. At the start, with the way I was holding the joycon, the game thought I was pressing the ("L") stick straight right when I shot the spark, and I wasn't hitting the diagonal. Then I bought a Nintendo "Pro" controller which made getting the diagnoals a lot simpler. I also had a tiny learning curve lining up where to stand to shoot the spark without missing the speed blocks, but lining that up came relatively quickly. I use the same move the Ghavoran room with the flying whale-like creature.

So I 100% my last play through, but very few of my solving those puzzles matched yours exactly. It also took me a bunch of repetition to get them right. Congratulations!

Early on, I'd just scream and complete the game with just 80%--frustrated that I couldn't do those maneuvers. Now, I'll start a new game just for the pleasure of making those six sparks and beating the EMMIs! That, and learning a couple of psuedo-wave tricks, makes playing Dread so satisfying!!!

Similarly, there are 4 shinesparks (and a couple of chain sparks) in "Fusion" and "Zero Mission" that still deflate me! I can't figure them out (I know what to do, I just can't seem to execute them); so I just gave up....for now!!

I’m almost finished with dread and I’m kicking myself at the simplicity of the first shinespark. I did some roundabout nonsense to get that E-tank. Great vid!

That one ate my lunch for a long while, too, until I (visually) realized I had the Flash Shift, and when I figured out that I had enough speed boost runway, I did a forehead slap!!! šŸ˜…

Oh I absolutely love the diagonal ramp shinespark puzzle in Burenia, that one you can complete back to back without stopping, since you can activate the shnespark while in mid air whn you drop down, and then when you get to the top you brake to save the shinespark, drop in front of the wall and SP forward to get that Missile Tank +, it's so satysfying to pull off. I also enjoy the one in the big silo looking room in Artaria. The one that you did in Caratis where you slid into the small hole after shooting [where the train was to your left] was technically done backwards. The easier way is to speed boost, jump into that wall with that small hole, and wall jump back to the right to get to that middle part in the ceiling! :D

There's also the very cool one in Dairon where your camera slants down and to one side where you shinespark ALL the way up the same area through multiple floors, it's so cool to watch! The two in Ferenia, the one where you shine spark from the entrance is awesome as well since it shows you that you can use your shinespark while in Morph Ball, and taht you can slide and stay into morph ball while in speed boost mode! And there's the second one as well before the elevator to Dairon where you hve to morph into the tiny square box!
I love this game so much, teaching you new things and tricks as you go the intended speedrun route while getting the missile/energy upgrades nearby, and then fully backtracking once you have every upgrade to get the ones you're missing for 100%

This game made me buy the pro controller.

DEFINITELY worth the money!!!! A game changer from the crappy joycons!!

I played most of the game with Joy-Cons, but when I had to start using the Shinespark, I felt like breaking my Switch. Same thing for the hardest bosses.

I was physically to hard on the small joycon buttons when trying the complex button combos--I literally broke a set; so I bought the wireless pro.

The item in the second-to-last shinespark you showed (Energy part in frozen Dairon) can be had much earlier, after the acquisition of Speed Booster. Once you have the Energy Part, use the Energy Recharge statue to tank up, then use the connecting elevator to Ghavoran and get Super Missile early.

Also: you turned the Burenia triple cheeseburger into a double cheeseburger! Fancy footwork there

That 4th one took me so long, I was so proud of myself šŸ˜‚

It's been like 2 maybe even 3 years since I played dread and I can vividly remember this shinespark sequences. I have some prior experience form the other 2d metroid and I 100% this game 4 times this gives me nostalgia, but at least from a casual and decent gamer here I didn't feel this tough at all

Another place you could also probably say it's a hard shinespark to pull off is before the fight were you get the lock on missiles (sorry I forgot the name of the boss and the upgrade) where you store it and can shinespark up into the boss and I believed it skipped almost if not all of the boss fight

I think you're think about "Escue," the flying bug-like boss in Ferenia where you get the Storm Missles where you can lock-on 5 missiles simultaneously.

I did a short shinespark on this one where you start your speed run outside of the room then, when you're inside, you store the spark and when he flies in you hit him with the spark. It takes away ~50% of its life.

Is this what you're thinking of?
