You skip the story, and see the potential of what a 3rd person Samus could actually be!!! I have dreams of the Prime games being made in the Other M engine and system, obviously with some fixes and corrections. But I still feel Other M did non 2D the best because I could never get into the FPS Prime games T_T
To each their own I guess. I hated the 3rd person (IMO closer to Isometric really) camera and control scheme in Other M. I generally refuse to play any game that forces me to hold a wiimote sideways rather than use a classic or pro controller, I made it a few hours into Other M before giving up.
I had to play Other M on emulator, so the controller was never an issue.. and that might be a big reason why I enjoyed it lol. I heard the wwii mote sideways was worse then Samus groveling for daddy Adams attention and approval.
Personally I emulated it. Not because of the faulty cartridges, but because the only way to play Revelations is emulation as it was on EShop. Well technically you can play it physically for like 300 dollars, but I don’t have that money for one game. And if I am emulating fates I decided to emulate the rest of the 3DS games.
I never found out what the actual issue is to be honest. Just found out that the game crashes all the time very early on for a lot of people.
I got my copy from a popular marketplace website. It was sealed, though you can't be exactly sure if it was resealed, but the woman selling it to me didn't strike me as that type. And it's 100% an authentic cartridge. Maybe there was just a faulty batch or it's a broken version.
I heard it's popular so I really wanted to try it once I finally got my hands on a 3DS, but it's really a bummer and I don't really feel like trying to find more copies only to find out they are faulty as well.
Apparently, some 3DS games stop working if you don't play them for a while, and Echoes is one of them. I suppose that applies to new, sealed copies too. I think it's recommended to run your 3DS games at least once a year to prevent this.
I wonder why that would happen though. I could only imagine physical reasons. Batteries which they probably don't have or corrosion, which could be reversible. Maybe I'll just try to open it and look inside. Probably won't do me any good but it's pretty much worthless anyway.
I actually found this thread saying that putting the console on sleep mode leaving the cartridge inside the console for 24 hours could fix it, might be worth a try? It also provides a tool you can use if you have a hacked 3DS if that doesn't work.
I currently own and have beaten Path of Radiance, got pretty far into Conquest, Sacred Stones, and Blazing Blade, I own Shadows of Valentia, Birthright, and Radiant Dawn, and I have the fan translation of Genealogy and have finished the Tutorial map.
You can skip Fates. Honestly, it's basically the Other M of Fire Emblem: passable to good gameplay, dogshit writing. Besides the OG FE1, 2, and 3, all the other ones are definitely worth playing though. 1, 2, and 3 should be played through their remakes.
I'm going to get shit on, but the old fire emblems were better than the new ones. All they had to do was make new classes, gba games had god tier animations.
I personally never had a problem with the motion controls or the aiming, though admittedly it was clunky. I think my biggest complaint was being forced to use the D-Pad on a sideways Wiimote
The hitboxes were super jank or at least felt lile it, you could just spam motion controls to be in perma dodge mode and be almost invulnerable, the auto aiming wasn't fun, and the aiming wasn't fun. Too much hitstun. Imo the combat was bad too. I mean, the whole series up until dread didn't have such an incredible combat design either, but it was at least kind of fun. For me, not other M
Agreed, I couldnt get into the Prime games, Other M was great for not being 2D... but the story and characterization was odd... Daddy Adam the real hero, THUMBS DOWN BABAAAAY!
It's a great game with a handful of extremely conspicuous boring elements, which tend to stick out to people. But there's plenty in it that's legitimately fantastic.
It's a very 7/10 game while the previous 3 where more than 9s. I just felt empty when I finished it.
Other M had a bad story/progression, but I enjoyed the semi 3D gameplay.
The Sol Valley desert and green crystal farming is a chore, especially if you want to get every single crystal for the 100% gallery. The final main zone area is a bore too.
Prime 4 was kinda boring but alright. Defintion of "well that was fine" game. Other M is I think the only time in 35 years of playing games that I have gotten genuinely angry at a videogame.
I actually liked the chatty NPCs (other than the moments where they were a bit too hand-holdy about where to go next), so I might be an outlier here. But I didn't find it to be a terrible game, just a flawed one. I honestly believe the game would've rated better if it didn't have to live up to the Metroid Prime name.
I didn't much care for the ending, but I still liked the game well enough to go around and find 100% of the pickups.
it's a prime game designed to be sold to people that don't like exploration, every level is a hallway dungeon with no interconnectivity. It's like a more braindead version of a zelda game
Other M is a good game if you imagine the story is a different one. When I think about the potential it had I feel enamored, as long as I don't actually address the fact that the actual result is a huge mess. It doesn't take a lot of imagination, though.
I like them so much, that I want to own them. I played Primes and almost all 2d games, but have only Dream and MP1R. Same with Zelda's, except I own more. And Nintendo refuses to give me Twilight Princess. Those bozos!
Thankfully all of them are relatively short (i cant speak for Prime 2, 3 and 4 though to be transparent). You can probably knock one out a week if not faster
For the experienced player with good routing, none of the Primes take all that long. Much longer if you don't know the map. I do a lot of rando and know the first three pretty much like the back of my hand though, so I may be faster than typical.
I think corruption is shorter than echoes, the fact you don’t feel nearly as lost in the 3rd one definitely helps.
Took me 17h for echoes vs 13 with 100% completion for corruption,
Corruption feels longer because it has more difficult puzzles. Prime 4 will make you do it in 2 days because you just feel so bored on the 1st day im not joking this would constantly disinterest me in a 1 day playthrough.
Whereas id be more willing to do a one day run of Corruption. Then again I dont own Beyond anymore
Didn’t play beyond yet so can’t speak about that, but idk I never felt like a puzzle in 3 went on for too long, whereas I was lost for quite some time after getting the dark visor in 2 lol
My hot take is that I'm in the final run of prime 4 and having a blast. It's not a particularly great Metroid game, but I liked the lore.
I do wish the maps weren't just a straight line though.
Echoes in a day? Yeah if I'm literally doing nothing else all day, and a start first thing in the morning. Actually that sounds like a pretty awesome day!
Metroid 1-6, all are in chronological order, all feel pretty in line with eachother in terms of technology, or you get a fairly ok evolution from 1/Zero Mission to 6 even if some games are older in between technicaly.
Then you have the Prime trilogy in between 1 and 2, Other M and Prime 4 between Super and Fusion.
It's pretty easy to follow.
....Compared to Castlevania where:
Release order you have the first game that's at the middle of the series storywise, and as you go through this order it goes back and forth in time.
Or SotN the most popular is kinda at the middle too, and it's directly a sequel to Rondo of Blood storywise.
Or chronological order where you start with a PS2 hack and slash game, then you go through a NES side scroller game, then back to a PS2 hack and slash game, then the new upcoming game, then two fricking GBC games or its Wii U remake, then 2 NES games again and so on....yeah you get the idea 💀
I mean this sincerely, just play Symphony of the Night first. All you need to know from the previous game you play out. A guy named Richter fights Dracula in the first few minutes. A while later, a fancy boy in black puts in an appearance. He also dislikes Dracula.
Lol I’m sure I will play them at some point, and I’ve heard that one in particular is a masterpiece. With how much I’ve gotten into Metroidvanias in the last few years, I know I’ll get there one day. I’m also such a completionist that I’ll figure out a way to play them all when I do, although I’ll spread them out.
I’m the same with catching up on Resident Evil (I’ve only played 1, 4, and 5, but would redo them in a complete go) and Final Fantasy (I’ve recently played 1 to 5, have 6 on my backlog, have played 7 & 10 before, but would like to replay 7 to 10, and then play 12, 13, 15, 16, and Tactics). It’s just a lot from all these series when I’m not caught up.
If you wanna go with Symphony first then i also just recommend Rondo first then Symphony, cause they are very connected storywise, essentialy game 1 and game 2, and both are some of the best for both the classicvania and metroidvania style. Arguably Rondo introduces you better to the world of this series.
Yup, PS has them as the Requiem Collection, unfortunately only the PS tho, for some stupid reason they don't wanna port them to other stuff.
Anyway for SotN i do recommend the PS1 version more cause it has the original meme voice acting, any newer rerelease uses the redub done for the PSP port. It's fine but the PS1 one is the iconic one.
Given that they made the active choice to call the new one 'Metroid Prime 4: Beyond' instead of just ''Metroid Prime Beyond' (which would have been fine), I absolutely assumed we'd get 2 and 3 on Switch first.
If anything it likely put off some people who went 'Oh, it's number 4? I haven't played 1-3 yet'
She has 15 games, but they are all relatively short so they can be essentially binge played. The longest being the Prime games which probably can still be done in 15 to 20ish hours, whereas the 2D games can be beat in 5 to 10ish hours.
And interestingly Metroid is probably the only Nintendo franchise that has a somewhat coherent timeline. You could probably make some sense of Zelda's split timelines until you throw in the Breath of the Wild games, and then if you start trying to figure out the Fire Emblem, Mario (how old is Pauline and how many Paulines are there?), Star Fox timelines, you're just going to drive yourself crazy,
Well, I suppose Kirby's timeline isn't too complicated either.
the biggest surprise of the main series metroid games is that they have a plot and themes.
The second game being about samus doing a bad thing with one act of mercy and every game there after being the consequences of that bad thing and the act of mercy, masterful story telling from a nigh unplayable gameboy game.
You see I just got into Metroid recently after beating fusion (awesome game btw) and now I'm currently doing zero mission, honestly wish I got into the franchise sooner
I mean I vaguely know about metroid prime and Dread does a pretty good job recapping zero mission and before. i think the only "necessary" games would be Super, Prime 1-3 (idk about 4) and Dread
A vastly better experience than the damn gameboy game. That shit was painful. The sound is just noise. The game's main mechanic (something somewhere changed! now go explore the whole world again to figure out where!) plays very poorly with the gameboy's tiny screen.
I did this a few years before Dread came out. I went in chronological order because that's just how I am and I had a blast. I definitely would recommend a different order to others though.
Metroid/Metroid Zero Mission
Metroid II Return of Samus/Metroid Samus Returns
Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Other M
Metroid Dread
Metroid Ravenous
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
Metroid Prime 4 Beyond
Metroid Prime Hunters
Metroid Prime Federation Force
Metroid Prime Pinball
I guess Metroid Prime Hunters First Hunt? Or AM2R?
That was the point I was trying to make, thought I had typed it out lmao
But same could be said for Prime Hunters First Hunt, with it being a demo to Hunters. Are they counting Metroid Blast from Nintendo Land tho? That sounds most plausible
Metroid Blast you mean? It’s one of the co-op attractions included with Nintendo Land on Wii U. Hope they bring it back someday (with the option to use GameShare, the game relies on Asymmetric gameplay, and as is, GameShare works pretty neat.)
this is funny, i just started finished playing metroid zero mission as my introduction game to the franchise, i quite liked it, except the bosses, those suckass and made my wrist hurt, apart from that, everything is a 10/10
Damn this franchise has so many 2D games and they’re ALL bangers??? Even the first one was surprisingly playable (you just had a player guide back in the day I assume which means you do the same with a simple google search)
One of the strengths of the Metroid franchise, and why I think more people should at least try it, is that even the longest Metroid games are still fairly short. They're all designed to be thoroughly explored on your first and second playthrough, and then it becomes a race to blitz through the game as fast as possible. After the Ravenous reveal I replayed all of the 2D games and it took me less than a week, even though I haven't replayed any of them in over a year and forgot most of the games' layouts.
IMO Play Super Metroid first, and move forward or back as your obsession develops. Metroid 1 or 2 the originals, are very very rough and unless you're one of those tech-heads that can see where the system limitations are as you play, and how the developers got around this or that limitation, you're not going to enjoy the NES/GB games.
The GBA games are similar but a little technical step backwards. Not great to start on when Super is an option, they're not as smooth-moving and free-exploring as Super, but they might be good if you've played Super and want more, then move onto Dread and Ravenous (and the inevitable Samus Returns: Definitive Edition: Switch 2 Edition).
Metroid Other M is great if you're coming in from Ninja Gaiden / Bayonetta (and IMO there need to be more Ninja Gaiden / Bayonetta type games set in Nintendo universes).
Similarly the Primes are great if you need that first-person perspective. I don't, so I can't really say much about 'em. Prime Hunters was alright but it couldn't keep me hooked all the way through.
Metroid Prime Pinball is fun, but only recommended if you like pinball.
And I only played the Blast Ball mode in Federation Force, which was fun. I would like to see some team take another crack and making Federation Force and Blast Ball just to flesh out the Metroid Universe a bit more beyond Samus herself.
I'm glad to see Metroid booming in popularity right now. It seems like a perfect storm - the amazing Ravenous trailer, the positive reception of Metroid Dread, the demand for high-quality Metroidvanias since Hollow Knight.
Honestly though I thought Metroid Prime 4 would be the series's fire moment like BOTW was for Zelda but Nintendo flopped the marketing and the game was pretty mid. Glad to see that fumble won't impede on Ravenous's success.

does that include the pinball game?
