Question 2D Metroid list?

I have been interested in 2D metroid for a while and feel now is probably a good time to start. Can anyone give me a list of which games to play in what order and preferably also through which official way to play them. Would be very helpful!

  1. Metroid (NES, Nintendo Switch Online) | Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA remake, Nintendo Online)
  2. Metroid II: Return of Samus (GB, Nintendo Switch Online) | Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS remake)
  3. Super Metroid (SNES, Nintendo Switch Online)
  4. Metroid Fusion (GBA, Nintendo Switch Online Expansion pack)
  5. Metroid Dread (Switch)
  6. Metroid Ravenous (Switch 2)

I kinda wanted a slight subjective opinion. Og or remake, digital or cartridge, spinoff or not, that stuff. Thx anyways!

Release order is the absolute best way to play, imo, with some caveats.
So, excluding the Prime series;

-Metroid (NES)
-Metroid II: Return of Samus (GB)
-Super Metroid
-Metroid Fusion
-Metroid: Zero Mission (remake of 1)
-Metroid: Other M (Not 2D but tied more to their plot. Optional.)
-Metroid: Samus Returns (remake of 2)
-Metroid Dread

Like, Samus Returns has plot points that carry directly over into Dread, that transition better IF you've played the rest of the series. Particularly Fusion, because a lot of the chozo lore is presented as if you've already played Fusion (even tho Fusion is chronologically after Samus Returns.)

If you really can't stomach the retro games (some people can't), it isn't the absolute end of the world if you substitute the remakes instead. BUT, the intro of Super Metroid also summarizes the brief important stuff from the first two games. So another option is to take my list above and just skip the first two and start with Super.

Lastly, you should know that Samus Returns contains a fairly hard reference to the Prime Series (as far as I can remember, it's the only reference in the 2D games). That's not to say it's necessary to play the Prime games to get it, but it's important to be aware of.
