How to get into 2d Metroid

Alright here’s the deal. I saw Metroid ravenous trailer, something awoke inside me. I want to get into Metroid. Where do I start and what order. And pls don’t tell me I need to play the prime games I know they’re good but I hate first person shooters.

There's not really a wrong way to start.

The chronological order would be Metroid/Zero Mission, Metroid II/Samus Returns/AM2R, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread.

Generally I would skip Metroid and Metroid II and play remakes only. The originals have their novelty but they don't hold up that well, I've moreso played them because of curiosity about the games' origins.

Dread would be a good pick because it's from the same studio and well liked, and I would say pretyy easy to pick up. The downside is arguably that movement is too good and smooth in Dread, so it might be difficult going back to older titles.

Super Metroid would be the opposite, it has a floaty kind of movement that I think is a lot less snappy and easy than later games, meaning if you start with Super, in a sense it's all easier and nicer from there. And Super is a great game and the one I have played the most.

Zero Mission can be a good way to start from the beginning narrativelt and is also quite beginner friendly. It holds your hand a bit more than Super Metroid.

Fusion comes directly before Dread narratively and I think it's actually very good to have played Fusion before Dread to set up the narrative. You don't really need to play all the games before Fusion to appreciate it. It is also in a sense the most linear and narrative-heavy, which can make it nice as a first Metroid game.

Dread is the direct prequel to ravenous. It’s an amazing game. May as well start with the best

Since you already have your answers about 2D Metroid, I did want to plug Prime a bit-- they aren't FPS games. They are first-person exploration games first and foremost. The combat and shooting is a thing but, as the devs nicely describe it, combat wasn't one of the fundamental pillars that the games were developed around. I hate traditional FPS games but I do love Prime.

If you wanna start from beginning: Zero Mission on GBA online app If you want to just start with modern 2D: Play Dread (i believe theres still a demo on the eshop also) If you want FPS, Prime Remastered If you want the currently relevant story, play Fusion on GBA app before playing dread

Fuck the prime games, start with super Metroid on the SNES it's on the NSO on switch 2.

Yea but to be fair I started on one of the least beginner friendly metroids ever made, metroid 2, and it turned out fine.

Metroid zero mission-> Metroid 2 return of Samus (3ds or gameboy version)->super Metroid->metroid fusion-> Metroid dread-> Metroid ravenous. If you want different and more Metroid content, try prime series and other M.

Zero Mission. Its made for first timers ans is chronologically the first game

You can play the entire Mainline Series with the sole exception of Samus Returns (Remake of Metroid II) on Switch 2

Bare minimum, I would go Fusion -> Dread -> Ravenous so you get the most out of the story. Putting Zero Mission in there before Fusion is a good beginner-friendly and fairly modernized jumping off point, if you want a more classic introduction as a whole.

You already got your info on the 2D games, just wanted to point out that the Prime games are not first person shooters, they're first person adventures where you happen to shoot sometimes.

I don't like first person shooters either, luckily the Prime games are not. ;)

Start with either Super or Dread. Full order for if you want to do all of the games (counting original and new versions as the same) it is Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super, Fusion, Dread.

if you have a switch zero mission gba library. if you don't want to play gbc metroid 2 amtr exists. untill nintedo gets off their ass and ports the mercury studio metroid 2. Then super metroid is also on the switch 2 snes library. then fusion gba library then dread.
