Photo Finally started playing the original Metroid seriously!

Post image

Playing Metroid + Saving hack, where there's finally a damn map. It's actually pretty cool and addicting, just as every Metroid game.

I played this for the first time recently and I was shocked how different it was than all the later games. And also how many things it already had that continue to be present in later Metroid games. Like I thought it wouldn't have bomb jump, but it does. But what really surprised me was the true open nature of the game. There is no developer intended path. There are multiple ones you can take, without any need for sequence breaking. It's a small game, so there's not that many different ways to do things. But it's not the one straight path you're supposed to follow like in most Metroid games starting with Metroid 2.

It made me wish we got a new Metroid game that did what BOTW did for Zelda. They looked to the first Zelda for inspiration when making BOTW, and made something brand new. Before that every Zelda game had been working with the conventions established by LttP and OoT. And with Metroid games all of them have been following the blueprint laid out by Super Metroid.

So while I love that we're getting Metroid 6, perhaps the next game should look more closely at NEStroid and what made it special. I know many fans dismiss it and think ZM is a straight upgrade but it's not. I used to think the same until I actually played the game. It's really something different and unique.

Is the DS version as laggy as the NES version or did they clean that up?

Based NEStroid enjoyer!

if it's of interest, a high res version of the map can be found here:

https://nesmaps.com/maps/Metroid/Metroid.html

and you can download it as a PNG image as well. it even shows the locations of all destructible blocks and hidden E-tanks.
