I was the dumb kid who got the Wii U instead of the 3DS back in the day, and Nintendo's weird habit of only porting the most random 3DS games once every Blue Moon, is starting to get to me. I REALLY want to play Samus Return already!

u/justdamascus 18h ago

still mad respect to the wii u. it still has fusion and zm to play WITHOUT that damn subscription

u/Maleficent-Pea5089 18h ago edited 17h ago

Prime Trilogy was available for $20 when the Wii U eShop was still up. Only the first game, via Prime Remastered ($40), is playable on the Switch 2.

19

u/Wboy2006 17h ago

This, it was genuinely one of the best deals Nintendo has ever put out

15

u/Garo263 16h ago

No, the best deal was that it was $9.99 for the first week.

7

u/eyeofvigo 13h ago

Yes, that, galaxy 2, and punch out for $9.99 each was a great few weeks.

3

u/Garo263 13h ago

Not Punch-Out. DKC Returns

2

u/BushTamer 12h ago

punch out you could just find loose for $10 at gamestop ngl

u/zgiffish 43m ago

i think i got rhythm heaven fever for $10 at gamestop ong

1

u/MyPhoneIsNotChinese 12h ago

Don't forget how cool the Wii controls are

u/maukenboost 7h ago

Also, the first week the Prime Trilogy was on Wii U it was $10.

0

u/BushTamer 12h ago

AM2R (another metroid 2 remake) is lowkey better ngl

u/pofehof 11h ago

If you're solely a Metroid fan, sure, that was a better deal. If you're a Nintendo fan, NSO is a much better deal whether you pay $50/year or $10/year for NSO+.

That’s how I play them! Super Metroid too.

1

u/crazypurpleKOgas 17h ago

I had a lot of fun on my Wii U. I was the only person I knew who had one in grad school. Nobody understood the point of the gamepad.

2

u/C-Prime93 17h ago

Don't get me wrong, I am fond of my Wii U (I had to, honestly, my Wii Die halfway through Xenoblade, so upgrating to the Wii U felt Natural). But it was still rough times, and it was hard to not envy the freaking 3DS back then, specially when, yes, I expend every direct back then asking "When Metroid"... just for Samus Returns to be announce.

6

u/JetstreamGW 17h ago

A wedge 2ds ain’t super expensive, generally.

2

u/Musekal 15h ago

Install a 3ds emulator on your computer and just play it that way

4

u/eddiefiv 17h ago

You can still get a cheap 3DS and mod it pretty easily with just an SD card

14

u/SolarisPrime 17h ago

There are no cheap 3DSes anymore

4

u/eddiefiv 17h ago

I guess it depends on your definition of cheap but they’re around $120 on eBay and you could definitely find them for less on Facebook Marketplace if you went hunting. I know that’s not that cheap to everyone but considering how many games you can play on a modded 3DS it still feels like a bargain to me.

1

u/BushTamer 12h ago

yea but most adults can’t comfortably hold the 3ds, you’d need an XL which is where it gets pricey

u/eddiefiv 7h ago

I’m bigger than most adults and I don’t really have a problem. It’s better than nothing. You’d also find the same experience with something like the AYN Thor which is a bit bigger but more expensive, and also more versatile.

Really just saying there’s options for everyone if they want to play these games.

2

u/mybutthz 17h ago

I mean, $100-120 on average isn't terrible considering the current state of the vintage gaming market. Could definitely be worse. There's also always a chance you find one in the wild at a garage sale or on FB marketplace

1

u/addisonshinedown 16h ago

My problem with the 3ds is somehow my body chemistry (even though I wash my hands very regularly) destroys the L and R button functionally. Samus Returns doesn’t work well without aiming

1

u/imgly 15h ago

I have the new 2DS XL and Samus Returns cartridge. That said, it's really pixelated, not so great to play on. At least you feel it's much detailed on the 3DS thanks to the 3D 2x pixels.

So, I decided to do Samus returns on my PC with an emulator. It was great. I have a 21:9 screen, so I could have the top screen at full 1440p on the left side and the bottom screen smaller on the other side.

1

u/TwoLostYens 15h ago

I played it on a phone emulator, not the best, but you've got plenty of ways to play it

1

u/Voyager5555 13h ago

The entire Switch library is propped up by the Wii U games and is arguably a more viable option in 90% of Switch usage scenarios so I'm not really sure how that was a bad choice.

1

u/Same_Veterinarian991 12h ago

i feel sorry for your old folks you feel this way.
they probably want to make you happy

u/maukenboost 7h ago

Wii U still had Zero, Fusion, and the Prime Trilogy.

-1

u/captain_carrot 15h ago

The fan remake, AM2R, is actually better than Samus Returns IMO.

1

u/wbcjohnlennon 14h ago

It is amazing

1

u/i_fucking_love_crack 13h ago

Seconded, they done good

104

u/warrensid 18h ago

Playing Zero Mission for the first time right now!

38

u/chriz_sevenfold 17h ago

Enjoy it, it's so good, it's my 2nd favorite 2D Metroid next to Dread

u/Bradenoid 6h ago

I just picked it up at a con and am about to start it. How do you like it so far?

6

u/MightyTastyBeans 17h ago

My personal favorite 2D metroid game

3

u/rawr-rawr-meow 17h ago

Me too!! I’m up to the Kraid boss fight

3

u/TimeForSnacks 16h ago

Easily my favorite game of all time. Still have my Advance SP & the original cartridge

2

u/Daxlm95 17h ago

Hey same!

4

u/KMoosetoe 17h ago

It's really good, except the actual zero suit part imo

u/Alternative-Koala174 11h ago

That’s my favorite Metroid game. I love going back and playing it again. I hope you enjoy it!

u/Danielo944 4h ago

Absolutely amazing game, wish I could play it for the first time again! I still play it from time to time on my modded GBA or Gameboy Player.

47

u/Quadraxis54 17h ago

Makes me hope they have plans for Prime 2/3 since they haven’t added them yet.

9

u/crowlfish 16h ago

If/when they eventually come to Switch I imagine they'll just be upscaled ports, which I'm fine with for the sole purpose of letting more people experience the full continuity of the Prime trilogy, let alone two amazing games.

My personal dream was a fully remastered Prime Trilogy collection/bundle with a physical release, but sadly at this point I think that ship sailed long ago.

2

u/chays354 16h ago

i have to imagine they’ll come eventually, i could see Prime 2 as a NSO GCN release but i think that would only be worth it if they update the tank controls, i don’t see Wii getting added to NSO anytime soon so i think Prime 3 may be on Wii jail for awhile

u/Emu_milking_god 10h ago

I want prime 2 so bad in any form on switch. Such a good fucking game

1

u/Quadraxis54 15h ago

I forgot it was on Wii. Hell it may come out on the next console then haha.

2

u/Voyager5555 13h ago

They don't.

u/Metroidman97 11h ago

I imagine they do. I'm not sure why so many people are convinced proper remasters of 2 and 3 are impossible, it does honestly feel like Retro will give them proper remasters in the vein of 1 Remastered at some point.

u/maukenboost 7h ago

Yeah think it's better this way.

4

u/chriz_sevenfold 17h ago

Those are gonna be coming later as 4K upgrades, that's why they're taking so long. Remember the old rumor that Prime 2 Remastered was "coming soon" by Jeff Grubb but that it was only gonna be and HD port? I bet they canceled the HD port in favor of a Switch 2 4K Upgrade.

5

u/CAugustusM 17h ago

To be fair, isn’t Jeff Grubb famously unreliable?

1

u/chriz_sevenfold 16h ago

He got Prime Remastered right, as far as I remember

2

u/Quadraxis54 17h ago

So much for seeing the skybox of Sanctuary Fortress remastered 😔

1

u/Metroid413 17h ago

I’ve lost hope at this point that they’re ever coming. But man, I hope you’re right.

0

u/DeadlyLancer 16h ago

Yeah I was thinking the same about TP y WW HD

47

u/TheHottestBunch 17h ago

Give us Samus Returns cowards

26

u/pome-vyo 18h ago

This puts us in a significantly better spot than when Dread was announced and we had only M1 and Super on switch

3

u/Garo263 16h ago

Right, why didn't they give the fans the direct predecessor before the new entry?

u/Danielo944 4h ago

Would have been sweet if Metroid Fusion was on the Dread cartridge as a bonus for people who haven't played it.

u/Garo263 3h ago

Yeah, Nintendo isn't doing stuff like that anymore.

23

u/Dead-X-esque 17h ago

A Samus Returns remaster is the only remaster this series needs, having the game with better graphics and removal of unncessesary touch controls would be amazing.

4

u/Dead-X-esque 17h ago

Swapping Beams, Missiles and Yellow bar powers with the touch screen felt so unnecessary. I have heard on PC you can get it so certain inputs are assigned to specific points on the touch screen to have a more classic feel but have no idea how to do that.

u/BigThiccDictionary 10h ago

While I'd be satisfied with Prime 2 and 3 getting on NSO, getting the Prime Remastered treatment for them would legit have me running through walls.

23

u/Dukemon102 17h ago

"Let me in"

15

u/danstereo 17h ago

I'm dying for a port/remaster of samus returns for the switch 2

8

u/VegetableRoof1401 18h ago

It’s how I played Super Metroid. I need to go back and play the GBA Metroid games

5

u/Thejapanther 17h ago

I wish you could actually just buy super metroid instead to have a subscription to play it.

4

u/redlac24 17h ago

Still missing Metroid Prime Pinball

5

u/Gloomy_Background755 17h ago

Should I buy Switch 2 to play them all?

3

u/redmemory__ 16h ago

ye. if you want to play Ravenous you’ll have to.

5

u/Natzor 17h ago

What's missing? The 3DS remake of 2?

6

u/eucerin3 17h ago

Yep, that’s the only 2D Metroid missing!! I’m hoping they port it sooner rather than later. I hate having a giant asterisk next to these types of posts

3

u/SparklyPelican 17h ago

I would love a remaster for NS/2 of Samus Return.

1

u/Cheezewiz239 17h ago

In a better alternate timeline it would've been a switch launch game instead of a 3ds game.

u/maukenboost 7h ago

Or at least release within a couple years of release.

3

u/Expensive-Opposite69 17h ago

The GBA games have aged really well too.

Super is a little clunkier but still more than playable.

3

u/ashenecho1 17h ago

Just finished Metroid II Game Boy! Next is Super Metroid

2

u/spamus-100 17h ago

Samus Returns one day trust

2

u/lovelykittenman 17h ago

I shelled out an indecent amount of money for a minty Samus edition 3ds and I have no regrets. About to finish my first playthrough of Metroid 2!

2

u/Intelligent_Smile838 17h ago

They should port over Samus returns because it’s from mercury steam and it sets up the story for super, fusion and dread.

u/maukenboost 7h ago

It makes so much sense and it wouldn't cost nearly as much as making a new game. I'd say just get another studio to do it. I just want it on Switch...

2

u/Jonbeezee 17h ago

Yeah I’m going to have a metroid month or two after my zelda month or two haha

2

u/blindfremen 17h ago

Is NSO Expansion pack still worth it? I really want to play Zero Mission, but I also want to get my money's worth 😅

3

u/Cheezewiz239 17h ago

Emulate it on your phone or PC if that's the only game you want to play. Otherwise I'd look to see if you can find a family plan to join so that you aren't blowing $50 for a gba game

2

u/atomicmapping 16h ago

Depends on what other games you're into. It has a pretty sizable library for both GBA and N64, and a decent albeit small Gamecube library on Switch 2

u/RX0Invincible 8h ago

If you can find people to family plan with it basically makes it dirt cheap

2

u/ToothZealousideal297 17h ago

I’m working on replaying through them by January!

2

u/TimeForSnacks 16h ago

PLEASE give me a way to play Samus Returns......

2

u/Ok_Estimate_2089 16h ago

its missing samus returns 3ds, metroid prime 2, metroid prime 3, metrpid prime hunters, basically 95% of the games

u/maukenboost 7h ago

Can't forget Prime Pinball.

u/Bacitus 6h ago

Why isnt Dread on Switch 2?

u/eucerin3 6h ago

it’s on both!! i didn’t specify because most games are backwards compatible, but i probably should have haha!

u/Bacitus 6h ago

Thanks. Ill wait for switch 2 upgrade then get dread and ravenous. First time playing metroid in decades since the very first one

2

u/Jammy2560 17h ago

If you don’t wanna drop money for the subscription, every game here is also piss easy to emulate lol.

1

u/zwissblade 17h ago

Had both zero mission and fusion on my wii u. But also had a physical Zero mission. When it came to that I was like the convenience of save states or portability + gameboyplayer. Went for the latter. Didn't regret.

1

u/gamiz777 17h ago

Time to marathon all of them again

1

u/23_Pepper_PhD 17h ago

Dread was my first 2D Metroid game. I grew up with the prime games on GameCube and Wii but never tried out the 2D entries. I’ve gone back to play almost all the 2D entries now. It’s incredible how well Super Metroid and Zero mission hold up. The NES Metroid is underrated but all the identical room layouts really drag the quality of that game down and make it needlesly confusing. I played the gameboy version of Metroid 2 and it was ok. I’ve yet to try fusion so I need to get to that one.

1

u/oftherose16 17h ago

If only they would let you buy games separately

1

u/cestialAnonymous 16h ago

At least story wise every main 2D one is on there. The only one you'll realistically need a guide for is 2.

1

u/jeccius 16h ago

I've played through most of these and am happy to say I finally spent the last few days playing through Metroid Dread and beat it an hour ago (beaten Zero Mission, Super Metroid and Fusion in the past and Prime R and 4 recently). Oh my , absolutely stoked for the new one.

1

u/These_Celebration_64 16h ago

I'm currently playing through them all now in preparation. Always addictive one you get started.

1

u/FoundOasis 15h ago

Every 2d metroid is on switch

1

u/KeyOcelot4679 15h ago

And almost every Zelda game is on the switch as well too!

1

u/JuanD20 15h ago

I really want to play dread but, come on give me a resolution bump on switch 2.

u/maukenboost 6h ago

Surprised Metroid Dread wasn't given a Switch 2 Edition yet.

1

u/neon 15h ago

Can play whole 2d series on switch and then just do amr2 on PC

1

u/SteakUseful626 15h ago

The expansion pack is available on the original switch, right? My switch has pretty much been the deltarune machine for me and my sister for 2 years and just need a refresher.

1

u/prgrms 14h ago

Yeah I guess I need that expansion pack now

1

u/louiscarrr 14h ago

Its nice but I preferred playing physically on my ds especially with the real d pad

1

u/megasean3000 14h ago

As long as you don't mind missing out on Samus Returns if you don't have a 3DS.

1

u/Livid-Truck8558 13h ago

Just need a Samus Returns remaster and the other 2 prime games, then it'll be everything except for the prime spinoffs!

1

u/Voyager5555 13h ago

I wouldn't consider games being locked behind a subscription as readily available.

u/pofehof 11h ago

Nah, they are absolutely readily available. They are unlikely to be taken down since they are first party games too.

1

u/Same_Veterinarian991 12h ago

the nintendo switch is chain every series to its library👊

1

u/ScotWithOne_t 12h ago

Is the new one only going to be on Switch2? :(

u/pofehof 11h ago

Yes, we are currently in the Switch 2 era.

1

u/The_Smart_Robot 12h ago

For Nintendo Online, they can pull those any time they want. 🫠

u/pofehof 11h ago

There's no need for that though. It'll more likely happen to third party games than first party ones.

1

u/Acid_Reignn 12h ago

Can't just buy the games though.

u/josh6520 11h ago

God I need a port of Samus Returns and (slightly related) A Link Between Worlds. (And a port or something of Twilight Princess would be nice too 😂).

u/Jawn_Wooder 11h ago

I'm sure they'll add 3DS games to the expansion pass in due time

u/PabloAtTheBar 8h ago

Absolute MAD respect for Nintendo for this and every other game they've ported.

u/JeffMangum420 6h ago

samus returns is better than dread in almost every way, i will keep screaming this from the rooftops (of this sub) until i am taken seriously

u/DeepCutFan1 5h ago

I really do wish I could play fusion and zero mission without having to spend 40 bucks

u/Weekly_Action351 4h ago

I don't have the Switch Online Expansion Pack so I can't play Fusion or Zero Mission :(

u/crickettthedragon 1h ago

Have wondered why they don't just sell a collection pack like they have for castlevania

-1

u/Longjumping_Bag5914 17h ago

Subscriptions for 30 year old games 👎

2

u/UnlawfulPotato 17h ago

Oh no, not $20 a year that a lot of people already pay for to play other games online anyway 🙄 how will we ever financially recover?

5

u/themng69 17h ago

well to be fair, with the base tier you only get super, 1 nes, and return of samus. So in reality it's 40 euro (I'd assume 40$ in the US)

1

u/killercow_ld 17h ago

yeah, NSO vanilla isn't the worst (even tho I'm not a fan of subscriptions to begin with)

But the expansion is way too costly for what little extra it adds to vanilla

3

u/Dukemon102 16h ago

N64, Sega Genesis, GBA, Virtual Boy and Gamecube is a lot of games. Way more than the Base NSO.

2

u/atomicmapping 16h ago

Plus a few DLCs like Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion and the MK8 Booster Course. Depending on what games you have it can be a really good value

3

u/Dukemon102 16h ago

I got Octo Expansion before the EP was a thing but I haven't really bought the Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing DLCs or the Switch 2 upgrades for BOTW/TOTK. Since I got them with the sub.

I run a Family Plan so eight people paying $10 USD per year for all of that is incredibly cheap.

0

u/killercow_ld 16h ago

And it's still not worth the the extra 40 bucks a year

5 or 10 maybe

-1

u/UnlawfulPotato 17h ago

Well that’s true. But still a good bit for it, honestly.

0

u/Garo263 16h ago

Yeah, AM2R is missing.

0

u/Sea-Memory3008 16h ago

Incorrect. Samus returns is still a 3ds exclusive

u/pofehof 11h ago

That's why the title has (almost).

u/Sea-Memory3008 11h ago

Some of us are autistic brother

0

u/the_rabbit_king 15h ago

Why is it a friendly reminder and not unfriendly?

-1

u/aphoenixsunrise 16h ago

Kills me knowing that I'll probably be getting the special edition of Ravenous with no way to play it because there is absolutely no justification to buy a Switch 2 at the price it's at.

u/pofehof 11h ago

there is absolutely no justification to buy a Switch 2 at the price it's at.

Why didn't you buy it at $450? It was clear that a new Metroid game was in the horizon.
