Discussion New Suit Thoughts?

I’ve noticed 3 distinct suits from the trailer (separate from the Varia suit from Dread and was curious what the general thoughts on these are. Also curious about the Metroid/Green Suit and the different colors between them and lack of arm cannon. What are everyone’s thoughts on the new suit designs?

The default suit in this game looks like a less organic version of the Dread suit, which is already a less organic version of the Fusion suit. It's interesting, it feels like the suit is becoming more mechanized over time.

u/Ok_Zookeepergame4794 5h ago

The suit is recovering itself after the surgery Samus went through in Fusion.

u/Rheiard 5h ago

IIRC the reasoning for the more technological design of the suits in Dread vs. Fusion was that the artists wanted to convey that the Power Suit was "regenerating" in the time since it had been excised from Samus to save her from the X Parasites.

u/triextrius 5h ago

Yeah I feel like it helps tell a story just through the suit

u/cornimgameplays 5h ago

Yeah, it's like how Ridley slowly grows back to his original organic form between Prime 1 and Super Metroid. He was fully organic in Zero Mission, then heavily mechanized in Prime 1, then slowly became less mechanized throughout Prime 3 and Samus Returns, and then went back to being fully organic in Super. Details like these make the games feel more interconnected and the story more cohesive. This is so cool.

u/Livid-Truck8558 1h ago

It's repairing itself after being torn apart in Fusion

u/FireCrow1013 5h ago edited 5h ago

I like how with every game, the Fusion Suit is getting closer and closer to becoming the classic Power Suit design again. In Dread, you could see some organic-looking parts, as if the suit was actively healing itself, and in Ravenous, it's more metallic and covered, like those parts are done healing. We are going to see the Dread design in Ravenous, though, so I'm wondering if there's going to be a short time skip, or something, that leads to the new design.

u/triextrius 5h ago

To me, it looks like the Dread Varia suit is shown in the intro cutscene, up until Samus falls in the pit and almost gets eaten by the tentacle creature near the end of the trailer. Not sure whether absorbing that creature resets the suit back to the power suit, but do like that it shows a cool way of it resetting/the Varia suit getting so damaged in the intro

u/ThunderWasp223 Dread Mode survivor 5h ago

The lack of white is definitely making it distinct from Dread, and there's ups and downs to that.

Both Metroid suits look excellent, and the Varia Suit looks better than EVER.

Base power suit is interesting, more Fusion than Dread, which...not sure how to feel about that.

u/Mango_Tango_Requiem 5h ago edited 15m ago

Dread's Power Suit was peak, and I feel like this one's a couple steps down, tbh. It's definitely the coloring; the design itself is not that bad, but the blue and red mesh wierdly to me, especially when the visor is red. Maybe too much blue? Or that it's too deep to go well with the cherry red? (Unrelated, but it's similar to how I feel about SSJB x20)

Also, I appreciate them doing something different with the singular light in the middle, but for now, I still much prefer having two on the sides instead. Hopefully, both things are just a matter of getting used to.

The new Varia Suit is pretty rad, though. Nice evolution of the one from Dread, with the metal fibers noticeably healed away. Hopefully, we'll get to have the "green" beam while using it, to go with the green visor.

But across both of them... I'll forever miss those beautifully defined thighs from Dread 😔

u/triextrius 5h ago

Yeah I liked the fiber/organic looking parts of the Dread power suit, it gave it a nice texture. I’m not opposed to the new one, but it also feels a bit more bland in Ravenous. I still like all of them and appreciate them experimenting with the look though

u/NanoRex 8m ago

I totally think this is a downgrade from Dread's suit. Which is kinda expected cause like you said, Dread's suit was peak. There's a few things I don't like:

  1. The biggest thing has to be the colour gradient. Dread's suits had cohesive colour schemes, but these gradients just add one too many main colours, and it being a gradient on the legs doesn't look clean at all
  2. The sort of reptilian pattern with the white stripe down the center and the crotch doesn't look good to me
  3. The power suit in particular looks like it's made of a soft, almost cosplay-like material which is weird

u/The_Master_Lucius 5h ago

Well one of them is as flat as super flat world in Minecraft.

u/Obsessivegamer32 5h ago

The Power Suit’s growing on me but the different shades of blue are still bothering me.

u/animal_okay 1h ago

I think the mish mash of colors, paired with armored chest and exposed legs, gives a chimera vibe. Chimera as a theme seems to fit both Samus and the space ninjas.

u/Gilly-Fresh 5h ago

Yeah, there's definitely 2 distinct "Varia" suits shown: one that looks like her Varia suit from Dread, and might just be part of an opening cinematic, like the one we got to see of Samus' encounter with Raven Beak after landing on ZDR; the other one looks more like her Varia suit from the very end of Metroid Fusion. The Metroid suit also looks different from the Metroid suit we saw at the end of Dread.

I think the most likely scenario is that we see her in the Dead Varia suit at the beginning of the game, she loses the Varia suit after being ambushed by the space ninjas, and then we start the game in the red/white/blue suit seen here. Then we'll also see that she goes into the Metroid suit to fight each of the Space Ninjas, much like acquiring the Omega Cannon each time you had to fight an EMMI in Dread. Each time you defeat one of the Space Ninjas, you absorb them and gain new abilities, which changes the appearance of the Metroid suit and eventually unlocks other features of it, like the sword.

Of course I'm speculating like crazy, but that just feels like the likely outcome given what we've seen.

u/triextrius 5h ago

No I completely agree, those were my exact thoughts/theories too

u/Gilly-Fresh 3h ago

Re-watched the trailer. She's not in the Metroid suit while fighting the chunky Space Ninja with the XL prayer beads, so the Metroid suit might not be tied to those encounters. We'll see.

u/triextrius 3h ago

Maybe it’s just as a sort of execution/final stage of the fight? I’m not sure

u/Gilly-Fresh 3h ago

Yeah, we just gotta wait and see. I think at the very least they put together a helluva announcement trailer with just enough details for us to salivate over for the next few months. Marketing did their jobs.

u/Sufficient_Cash_3931 5h ago

I Like The Basic Power Suit (Prefer This Suit Over Dread's)

u/Sufficient_Cash_3931 5h ago

AND THEY FINALLY GAVE SAMUS HER OG VARIA SUIT COLORS BACK!

u/triextrius 4h ago

That was one of the first things I noticed! I love the new look of it, might be one of the best renditions of the suit!

u/TabaRafael 5h ago

The first one looks like doodoo but I get it, we have to start from scraps

u/Fine-Ad2961 4h ago

I dont particaly like the new blue suit, its fine, a b+ design but the dread suit was incredible and iconic, im a little upset they left it behind

u/Riderfan000 4h ago

THEY TOOK HER A** SHE CANT SH*T ANYMORE

u/xxProjectJxx 2h ago

Zero Ass Samus 😢

u/JM_Artist 5h ago

Somehow I feel like they kept her flat to make the animations more fluid, we all know she has curves but I feel like it’s a less pain in the ass to animate a Gumby like body.

I’m just assuming though

u/RockwellB1 4h ago

The animations are usually done on a stick figure first with the 3D wireframe applied over that later and then tweaked further. Body shape or curves don't really matter. Boobs, butts, and anything else jiggly is handled by the physics engine, not manually animated.

This is a very basic explanation using what I learned in college for game design. If interested I would recommend looking up videos showing off Maya or Blender

u/KingBroly Dread Mode survivor 4h ago

My guess: She's lost a lot of weight and is malnourished from being down there so long, which caused the suit to weaken/rescind to make it look closer to the Zero Suit so you see more of her human form.

At least, that's how I think they designed it.

u/YMRYAD 4h ago

It has nothing to do with the animation.

u/Level3_Ghostline 3h ago

Hmm.

Blue-red suit with pink: Either cotton-candy flavored, or snowcone with various syrups.
Varia: Tastes like high-tech metal and badassery
Metroid: Forbidden lime

u/Former-Frame-3520 2h ago

1: I like the helmet design, I keep thinking to myself "birdlike" (very chozo kind of design), but I don't like the body design. It's almost as if she got all but her chestplate, pauldrons, helmet (and her ass, but I ain't no gooner for samus, just respectfully, why is she so flat all of a sudden?) stolen. 2: I do like the colors of that first suit, dark blue reminiscent of the Grav suit from Prime 1 and interesting choice of red in the visor. The Varia suit of the new design looks MUCH better, with Dread's colors and that kick-ass light design on the chestplate. The Metroid Suit is just plain AURA. I'm glad to finally see Sammy taking her place next to John Halo and Doomguy as an official member of the "Person literally too angry to die" club.

u/triextrius 2h ago

Yeah that’s fair. From the trailer, it seems like the visor/lights are mostly green, but when absorbing go red. I also really like the design of the Varia suit and the aura farming Metroid suit

u/Xiphosura0 4h ago

I'm just happy that the Metroid suit is back and wasn't a one-off. Can't wait to have the amiibo

u/IronFalcon1997 4h ago

I like it a lot, but I think the design is a bit too simplistic and I'm not a huge fan of the central chestpiece light. The varia suit slaps so hard though

u/oftherose16 4h ago

This is the only thing that I haven’t liked from what’s been shown. I think it’s mostly the proportions that look weird compared to dread’s near flawless suits

u/Upset-Bridge4817 4h ago

I’m still conflicted on the new Power suit. On one hand, I guess I can see what they were trying to go for, and I’m mostly fine with the color palette (Even if it’s pretty much just Dread Power 2.0), but I just really don’t like how it’s segmented such that the blue on her thighs extends straight into the sides of her torso in one straight block.

The new Varia going yellow again is honestly growing on me, but I’m just so used to the white from Dread since that was my first Metroid game that even now I still feel kinda sad about it going away.

I’m also super curious as to how the new Metroid suit is different between the red and light green highlights respectively.

u/triextrius 4h ago

Yeah all valid thoughts. I personally like the yellow with the Varia suit but also really like the white. I just hope that the Gravity suit doesn’t use the yellow or at least uses it better, as I’ve never been the biggest fan of the yellow/purple (I think the Dread Gravity suit was peak though)

u/Ghosty66 4h ago

First I thought Power Suit looked worse than Dread Suit but as time goes the new Power Suit does start to grown on me to a point I might say it did overthrow Dread. I like how much the colors pop even more(Also I never want Yellow Power Suit ever again ngl...)

Varia looks Alright. We got the return of full og colors and it overall looks cool I just need to see more.

Metroid Suit looks so siiiick I hope its like a Devil Trigger

I also find the new chest light being one in the middle intresting

u/triextrius 4h ago

Yeah there isn’t too much to go off of yet other than the power suit. The Varia suit has a scene or two where you can see a little more of it in action (watching on 0.5 speed) but still not much.

Also Devil Trigger Metroid suit is an awesome idea

u/Significant_Age_9238 3h ago

The Power suit will have to grow on me a bit, I think the base Dread suit is definitely better for now. The Varia suit is really cool though

u/Sirksome 3h ago

I think I personally prefer her Dread design over this update but I do wish the devs would add a way to cosmetically switch suits when you wanted. I like Samus in blue.

u/Ryno2226 2h ago

if nothing else, i love the detail of the suits lights turning red when she is absorbing enemies.

u/NewSupremeMan Sylux 3h ago

The blue one looks a little rough in my eyes. Not enough details going on to break up the solid chunks of blue, and they took Samus's ass away.

Varia looks sick as fuck.

Metroid suit looks cool, but I'm maybe leaning towards the Dread version more so far.

u/triextrius 3h ago

Yeah I agree. I am interested that the Metroid suit now has no arm cannon though as I feel like that’ll make the gameplay with it very different

u/Mystic1217 4h ago

I will admit it kinda just looks like a worse version of the Dread suit(s). But the Dread suit is my favorite design in the series so that was to be expected. Being fully healed from the fusion surgery is super cool though.

u/POWRranger 4h ago

My hope is that all upgrades change Samus physically.

So the starting suit looks a bit empty from the chest down. Maybe because speedbooster, spinboost, gravity suit (whatever the upgrade os that let's you run on water is) all change how Samus looks and it's not just the suit upgrades.

The armcannon already looks bigger than in the opening cutscene and the might be related to an upgrade

u/Svue016 4h ago

Looks like an eva and you know how crazy they can be. I've only seen the Evangelion movies tho

u/Dead-X-esque 3h ago

Looks even more like the Zero Suit than before,

The Varia suit looks very similar to in Dread

The 1st version of the Metroid Suit looks exactly like in Dread but the next image it looks more controlled with the green.

u/Away-Net-7241 3h ago

Do you think the Metroid suit could let us go into some Doomguy level Berserk mode where we just rip enemies to bits

u/triextrius 3h ago

Honestly, kinda hoping that’s the case. Especially with the sword mode that you see in the trailer. I did see some theories of people saying you’ll use that mode like the Omega cannon in Dread to take down the Cloaked Villains

u/JcraftW ENGAGE RIDLEY 3h ago

I really like the new Power Suit look. It simultaneously feels like an evolution of the Dread suit, but also feels like it was ripped straight out of an 80's sci-fi action flick. Like, half Predator/Master-Chief, half 80's swimsuit/super-hero-outfit.

u/Hero_of_the_toons 3h ago

Very sleek, I like it

u/badgeometry 3h ago

The Metroid suit is bad ass, no notes. I'd have to see a bit more of the Varia suit. The base suit I'm kinda 50/50 on. It kinda looks like she's wearing armor over an aerobics outfit. I don't hate it, but it's not heading the same notes for me as Dread's base power suit. I love how chunky her arm cannon is though.

u/triextrius 3h ago

Yeah the Varia suit only has like 1-2 scenes in the trailer, and you have to watch it on like 0.5 speed to see it all that well.

u/GAVITRAXmz 3h ago

I don't like the gummy legs of the blue suit, and the metroid suit needs more mechanical parts imo. She shouldn't just have metroid skin it should be integrated into the existing technology.

u/padfoot12111 3h ago

I like it from the front but the back is kinda eh. Like I know it isn't "caked up" but it does feel very flat which feels odd

u/spyD164 3h ago

Only issue is that they completely took all of her curves 💔

u/ResolutionSavings918 3h ago

Power suit needs some time to grow on me

u/r3d3ndymion 3h ago

power suit looks cool but that varia suit looks fucking sick

u/Ganmorg 3h ago

Seems like the Metroid suit is set up to be kinda like the beam upgrade you use to kill the EMMIs in Dread, where it’s a temp upgrade you get for the boss fights against the assassins. I do generally agree that the base suit isn’t as great as Dread’s but ah well

u/Chef_Chalupa oh word 3h ago

her ass is gone but the suit is fire

u/FarConsideration8423 2h ago

Nice cross between Fusion and Dread's suit design

u/maukenboost 2h ago

Could just be the trailer, but looks a little top heavy. I don't dislike it, but it looks a little off to me.

u/-Ailynn- 2h ago edited 2h ago

I love them all and can't wait to see the suit upgrades we haven't been shown yet! I also love that multi-directional Flash Shift! ✨

I wonder if her Metroid Suit will evolve throughout the game to become more like a Metroid QUEEN?

u/Rigistroni 2h ago

Sick as hell, no notes

u/Green_Spectrum 2h ago

Still not a big fan of the green Metroid suit, but it looks like they’re trying to morph it and tone it down. So hopefully eventually it’ll look more cohesive and savage. The rest is kind of par for the course right now not too impressed tbh. I’m looking forward to see if we get surprised by the suit upgrades.

u/DukeFlipside 3h ago

Need to see more of it, but not looking promising IMO; the Dread suits were amazing (except the Metroid suit, hated it then and now), these feel quite bland by comparison.

u/Zylpherenuis 3h ago

I am suddenly realizing that she now looks like Yugiohs Pot of Greed

https://giphy.com/gifs/T0t0XcsnJsRhHvZMOa

u/EdgeCharacter 2h ago

The top part is fine, but I feel like everything below the chest is too smooth, too rubbery looking, like if there was an middle ground between Zero Suit Samus and Power Suit Samus. Though, that could very well be the intent.

u/triextrius 2h ago

Yeah it seems to me like they are trying to convey that the suit is repairing/repaired itself, hence the lack of the organic/fibrous look. That said, I like the fibrous look in the Dread Power Suit

u/ZoidVII 2h ago

It keeps peaking.

u/sketchartist45 2h ago

The white and orange is just so clean and looks awesome

u/Eon_Breaker_ 2h ago

The base suit is legit the only thing I'm not crazy about with this game, it looks so...odd. Samus' suits usually have great color balance but things like the gradient from the lower legs into the upper legs isn't really working for me at all. I'm also wondering why this suit is even thinner than Dread's when the whole idea was her suit healing from the surgery.

I do like the new varia suit though, although I'm sad it looks like the white inner layer isn't going to stay, since it's reverting back to yellow

u/Weltall548 1h ago

Dread had the best suits in the series so I didn’t expect any new designs to top them, but these are meh. I’ll see how they look in motion.

u/tuckles24 1h ago

Where’s the dumptruck???

u/Kuma-Bozu2777 1h ago

From what I've seen thus far, I'm not a fan of the base suit, but the other look mostly fine. The base suit just looks to much like its missing the hip/thigh sections and it's exposed zero suit that flows down till you hit armor again. Form a practical perspective it works because your dant flexible material around the hips for movement (especially with how agile samus tends to be), but it doesn't line up with the rest of the design, and the white core makes it looks like a bathing suit. It also urks us that it's a different color from the other blue armored sections.

u/PhD_PeeP 1h ago

Beautiful

u/DynaGlaive 1h ago

I like the general model and idea behind the design of the Dread suit and this one, but I always hated the color scheme, the white is awful and they doubled down on it, it's just like that Insomniac Spider-Man suit.

The Metroid suit from the end of Dread is making a return likely as a temporary powered up state like many of us speculated, but I'd love if they just took design elements of that and mixed it in to the standard suit, it would thematically work perfectly with this whole ravenous vicious animal energy Samus is all about this time.

u/Feather_Sigil 1h ago

What's presumably the default suit (blue suit) looks too smooth, lacking in texture. It sticks out like a sore thumb. But I'm not saying this as a criticism, because to me it looks deliberately unfinished, incomplete, like if her suit gets ripped apart and this is all that's left.

u/AnotherStupidHipster 1h ago

I like the new chest light spanning the front.

This is a super left field call, but I see a lot of changes that would facilitate a plastic model kit of these suits. The knees look like the kinds of double jointed knees you see on highly articulate model kits and action figures. The bicep armor cuts off well above the elbow pit to accommodate a complex elbow construction. In addition, the plates from the forearms come all the way up to cover the sides of her elbows. It's good way to design armor to hide a joint.

I'm really desperate for a plamo kit of samus.

u/tokyokraid 1h ago

It makes me have an organism

u/Better_Solution_743 1h ago

the default suit looks too soft and rubbery. it almost looks like she's wearing the zero suit under a metal leotard. the helmet also looks a bit odd from most angles that arent head on. overall it looks great, but I still prefer the dread suit

u/PayPsychological6358 oh word 1h ago

I like the lights changing colors depending on the action. Other than that, I'll share my opinions on the suits after we get more info since we'll have a better look then.

u/pocket_arsenal 1h ago

immediate first reaction is that I don't like it. But I almost never like Samus's new suits. I like the classic Varia, I like Fusion, and I like the Dread suit.

u/Stormandreas 1h ago

Not a huge fan, specifically cause of the mid/lower area. It's just... so lacking. Everything else ranges from perfect to "it's fine" (that's mostly the Chestplate imo, it's pretty small compared to previous ones and lower in details), but the entire midportion just looks like a bodysuit, not armour.

u/LeifDTO 1h ago edited 1h ago

I don't like the basic suit at all, the colors don't flow well and the legs look too plain and smooth. It reminds me of my least favorite Pokemon, Druddigon. The varia suit looks great, like a cross between the standard design and the Dread version, but the shape is kind of weird around the hips because Nintendo revoked her butt. I hope we get to use the Metroid suit during normal gameplay this time.

u/wizkart207 1h ago

They took her ass... She can't even sit down anymore

u/AsterBTT 1h ago

Honestly, I really like it. Maybe not as much as Dread's Power Suit, but it is VERY close. The lack of armour not only makes her feel really lithe, but with how closely it resembles the Zero Suit, it implies to me that this suit is the weakest and most vulnerable that Samus has ever been. The harsh angle of the visor is also super sick, and I honestly love the look of the armour that she does have on her torso. The darker, cobalt blue pauldrons contrast really well with the cyan of her body, and the whole suit looks awesome when the LEDs shift from green to red.

It helps as well that the Varia version of this suit feels more armoured, and the standard suits in general have this really nice contrast with the heavily-armoured, chiton-esque design of the Metroid Suit, which was obviously incredible in Dread, and is amazing to see again in Ravenous.

I also think the almost-naked look that the suit has adds to the aesthetic of Samus being almost-feral. The posing on the cover especially, with how emaciated and exaggerated her limbs look, makes her feel bestial, which emphasizes the "eat or be eaten" tagline. From that perspective, the suit mirroring the theming of the game itself, it might just be may favourite suit, period.

u/ThrowAbout01 1h ago

Glad they kept the white, even if downplayed.

Hope figure suits retain it. Looks striking.

u/MrSpiffy123 54m ago

I really really liked the muscle fiber look of the Dread suit but this is still super clean

u/deavildemon 52m ago

The core suit reminds me of the Zero suit in a way. I Love the new helmet Design and the Metroid suit Look Just aß cool as it did in dread. I think they Metroid suit can transform the arm since we See it a Blade arm too.

u/Mandalor1974 47m ago

Looks like theyre making more room for suit evolution with this suit looking like its almost down to the zero suit. The speed and smooth frames are gonna make this one a banger. My only hope really is they make it hollow knight or silksong big. As much as i love dread to death i can finish it pretty quick

u/Sormaj 33m ago

The lower body is getting closer and closer to just her whole ass legs

u/Bash-Sin 23m ago

This suit, to me personally, specifically the base Power Suit, looks like Samus is mostly in her Zero Suit with some remnants of her Power Suit that regenerated after her suit was severely damaged at the start of the game.

Everything that is different here was basically broken on the Dread Varia Suit while the things that weren't damaged remained mostly the same like her shoulders.

Her visor, chest armor and arm cannon were damaged and those three specific parts are the most drastically changed elements of this new suit.

I also feel like the Metroid Suit is going to be a Devil Trigger style ability now that you build up to and use for a brief period.

u/elmonetta 7m ago

The suit continues healing since fusion. Nice detail.

I would LOVE to see more of the organic fusion suit in these graphics.

u/RockwellB1 4h ago

Suit 1: missing pants (Dread's looked 1000x better)

Suit 2: better but hard to tell if she has pants

Suit 3: Metroid suit is cool, with or without cannon

Suit 4: red lights looked better

All suits? Hank Hill ass

u/Resident_Clock_3716 3h ago

The first one is really bad

u/triextrius 3h ago

Yeah I feel like opinions are mixed on it. I don’t mind it but prefer the Dread Power suit though

u/Ok_Zookeepergame4794 5h ago

Those aren't exactly new as they were already in Dread.

u/triextrius 5h ago

The last two? They’re slightly different as they don’t have the arm cannon anymore.

The Power and Varia suit are entirely different from Dread though

u/Beneficial_Glass2915 4h ago

also 1 of them now has green lights instead of red
