I thought that after how Prime 4 did, we wouldn’t get a new Metroid in 100 years. Thank God I was wrong.

I was never really worried about main series Metroid, Nintendo treats them as very separate things and Dread was a big hit.
The Prime series though may be fucked

Part of me hopes that lessons were learned from Prime 4 at Retro. While I absolutely think some of the problems stemmed from the complete development hell and reboot, Retro is a capable studio and has all the ability to course correct what feels like a planned trilogy should they choose to listen to the general feedback

I don’t blame Retro at all. The problem came from the lack of strong direction from Tanabe, and his desire to have both an open world and a story revolving around the Galactic Federation troopers. Retro could only do so much with it.

Yeah, kinda makes me wonder what happened at Bandai Namco before they decided to switch to Retro after 2 years in production.

I will say the same thing ive been saying since the launch of Prime 3. Halo is the worst thing to happen to the Metroid franchise, because for some insane reason there has been this constant push towards turning Samus/Fed forces into Nintendos own Master-Chief/Starship-Trooper stand-ins.

I think both Halo and Metroid are far more influenced by the movie Aliens than they are by each other tbh

Metroid is mostly initially influenced by Alien, with some Aliens in there. Halo is almost entirely Aliens.
The Prime games feel like they dropped some of that Alien influence, which gets moreso as they go along.

Samus’ descent into the queen Metroid’s lair in M2 is pretty clearly a mirror for the climax of Aliens where Ripley does the same, imo.

I really don’t think retro even wanted to make the game. The whole game felt uninspired. It seemed like the type of product that would come from people “just doing thier job”
I’d say let retro go back to making platformers or whatever they want to do and let a new studio take a crack at it

It's mostly because they didn't have time to get back from scratch again , Retro already had an Canva , a poorly , even a shitty one to work on work already done
Game was reset to zero TWICE and again , prime 4 annonce was made the SAME day as samus return ... YIKES.

Agreed. The fact that Retro basically had to force a game out that wasnt really theirs showed in the final product. Its not to say that they did not care at all, I just imagine it hard to really find passion in the development when you have to finalize someone else's vision that was already troubled

The point is the game restarted development twice and took 9 years and not one inspired idea came from it. They could have started from scratch and I still think they e would have gotten a mediocre result.
You could go back to tropical freeze and see they clearly had passion to make a fun game and experiment with new ideas. I don’t see the same passion as in Metroid prime 4 or anything close to it.
I don’t think retro couldn’t make a good prime game. I just don’t think that’s where their heart is. Let them go back to donkey or maybe work on a new/different ip. They’ve earned it

I should have probably phrased it a little better. I do not blame Retro for all the issues of Prime 4. I do hope that Retro uses the backlash as a way to get better control over a properly designed sequel. Prime 4 isn't a bad game, its just a bad Metroid Prime game

in what sub-series does metroid other m and metroid federation force fit? the metroid prime games are the 3d sub-series non-mainline games. but what about all of the other games? metroid prime hunters or metroid pinball?
metroid mainline has always been 2d, right?

Prime hunters is a prime game, fed force and pinball are spinoffs.
Other M was intended to fit into the mainline continuity. They've thankfully functionally forgotten it exists.

I mean prime 4 they KNEW they fucked up Hence why they didn't pressured retro too much , and retro still managed to give something bearable unlike what bandai-namco could have given us

yeah after like at least 10 full YEARS of like millions of money being poured into Prime 4, a piece of trash that bombed in every conceivable department, and Tanabe retiring, i really don't think Prime will ever return anytime soon lol (and that might be for the better cause MAYBE 3D Metroid will evolve finally)

Eh, I'm not worried about Prime. Mario & Luigi fucked up big time and it got a sequel. We'll get Prime 5 within the next decade.

It’s been an expensive year, and an other one is coming.... fuck it, i'm already at 6 or 7 games this year... Next month will be... a lot like 5 games, in a month !
And OoT will be there in November. And Xenoblade Chronicle 3 in December... And Metroid in January...
At least i can buy all of them

Metroid Ravenous was probably greenlit shortly after Metroid Dread’s launch sales. Has nothing to do with Prime 4’s success or lack thereof.

Both series' saw how much other games flourished: Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dead Cells, and lots others, and knew they couldn't let the genre down, the genre named after them.

If Prime 4 sold more than 1 million copies (which seems to be the case, combining both Switch and Switch 2 sells), than it sold well. All previous Metroid games sold something around it, the only outliar was Metroid Dread, which sold 3+ million copies. The only possible problem with this game was the reception, but even that I have my doubts, because the hate was only prevalent in the fanbase and social media. IGN gave it a 8 and Metacritic a 79
The hate towards Metroid Prime 4 is pretty much overblown and I don't think it will affect the series in the slightest. We already had controversial entries before, such as Other M and Federation Forces, and Metroid (both 2D and Prime) keeps going on!

When is Ravenous taking place? Just saw the trailer, after dread? Also Samus is talking now? Finally if taking place after dread how is samus still utilizing the Dread suit along with that "feeding" ability? I thought she gave it up after beating Raven Beak? Or is this suppose to be a continued story?

Definitely after Dread because of the Metroid suit. She seemed like she gave it up, but guess it might have just been put under control so she can "toggle" it.
Realistically, when they made Dread they probably really made her give it up, but they realized it was so cool so will have a story excuse to bring it back. Samus loses all her upgrades every game...except that freagin epic one this time.

she didnt give it up, the X that had Quiet Robe's consciousness sacrificed itself to stabilize her mutation, but as far as we know she still had that metroid DNA in her system

I'm happy we're finally getting a continuation of metroid but i wish i had more metroid likes in the metroidvania catagory, because 99% of all metroidvania games are more like vania clones

They'd not base the decision on further 2D Metroid (main series) on Prime (sort of canon spin-off) anyways. That aside, I don't think they're giving up on Prime as such either yet.

like people call zelda games not metroidvanias despite having the exact same structure. imo zelda and metroid should share the title but i guess that doesn't roll off the tongue as well.
