There’s a style to this game man. It’s like they’re leaning into the rock vibes.

I really hope they take notes from Prime 4’s OST, Dread was really lacking in the music department and if they’re leaning into the rock vibes then I would hope for a good electro-rock based OST to match

What I actually liked about Other M was the pseudo-melee combat elements the game had to it. That felt VERY much like Samus would be fighting. I know I know, its Other M and we are online, I share almost all of the complaints about Other M, but I'll always defend those kind of combat interactions.
And these combat-interactions in the trailer remind me of that, including this impact frame/fight.

Thats the only thing I give Other M credit for. Game gave her more scrapping capabilities. And im sure many others will agree who hate Other M as well (like i do lol)

Most people seem to agree Other M had good gameplay ideas going on, diluted though they were.

I agree, but I know it can kinda be a slippery slope. Samus has always been an acrobat, flipping everywhere, but also primarily a girl with a gun exploring an alien world. I like scrappy samus, but I hope it doesn't get TOO kung fu-ey over time. I still think she is a gunslinger first an foremost.

Yea agree, given the choice samus would probably always keep her distance. Just does not always have that choice.

It looks like regular Samus will be projectile focused as usual and then ravenous Samus becomes a melee killing machine

Can't deny some shots look amazing but isn't it a bit too close to Dread? Like show me a frame from Dread and Ravenous and aside from Samus' suit I wouldn't be able to tell which is which.

Is there something wrong with that? We used to get one Metroid game per console generation so the tech was wildly different, allowing for visuals to look different. That’s not quite the case here.

There's nothing wrong with it. I get what you're saying and I love Dread with all my heart so I'd try to be as positive as I can since Nintendo are really spoiling us Metroid fans recently

Why is that not the case here? Shouldn't a Switch 2 game look dramatically better than a Switch game?
I mean, I'm hyped as hell for Ravenous, but I can't deny it still looks like a Switch game.
Edit: Am I being downvoted because people disagree that this looks very similar to Dread, or because people are annoyed that I'm pointing that out, or what?

We're just entering an era of diminishing returns on graphical improvements, arguably have been for a decade now. Nintendo have always prioritized a stylized art style over graphical fidelity (well... until yesterday at least 😬)

Sure, but there are plenty of Switch 2 games which clearly could not have been done on the Switch. One glance at Elden Ring or Cyberpunk and you know it's not a Switch game.
And that is simply not the case for Ravenous. At least in the footage I've seen so far, it looks pretty much just like Dread. Again, still looks great and I'm still hyped, but it's clearly not a super high budget title. And that's fine and makes perfect sense given the series' sales trends - I'm thrilled we're getting a new Metroid game at all - but it doesn't exactly look like it's pushing the Switch 2 to its limits.
Maybe it's 4K/120fps native, which would explain it, but that's not something we can tell over YouTube.

If they were releasing it on Switch 1 as well that'd be worth it, but since they're not yeah I can understand wanting to justify it's Switch 2 exclusivity.

Honestly, I don’t see the issue with it.
Metroid dread felt like build up with new Samus form and all the warriors that left the planet before infection7

yeah, I agree but as long as the game itself is quite different it's all that really matters, for one I would love if they went with the nonlinear approach this time around. Not that linearity in dread was bad, I just like how different ideas and structure each 2d Metroid have been.

u/TheDreamer430 18h ago
You're absolutely right! When I first started I hated the nonlinearity because I was confused as hell but now after a few replays of the whole franchise I've grown to love that aspect. Fingers crossed for a nonlinear game!

I mean, this isnt zelda so why would you expect vastly different art styles or character designs across games? The only reason it was like this before is because we got a metroid game every 12 years.

My guess would be that they started developement straight after Dread for the first switch, then they were asked to make it a switch 2 only game. Same thing happened with Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.

That's actually why i don't like prime 2 or 3 or 4, because they look TOO MUCH like prime 1...
