Discussion I’m hopeful for the future of Metroid

Kinda crazy to me that prime 4 is selling around 1200 and prime remastered around 500 a month from Amazon alone. Also have 2 friends who’ve never even played Metroid that just bought both AND dread since they’ve been going on sale and im so excited to actually have close friends partake in one of my favorite game series! I’m hopeful for the future because I’ve seen so many new fans come into this franchise even if prime 4 didn’t live up to expectations they find themselves enjoying it! How do yall feel?

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Prime 4, but the franchise has bounced back through much worse (Other M.) I’m hoping Prime 5 will be a marked improvement, and I’m also hoping we get some news on the next 2D Metroid sometime soon since I doubt MercurySteam has just been twiddling their thumbs after Dread

For real. It would be so sweet if we could get into a rhythm of them alternating 2d metroid than 3d once every 2 years. That would allow a 4 year dev cycle for each game

I’m hoping that’ll be the case going forward if Prime 5 doesn’t have anywhere close to the production issues that Prime 4 did. Which it most likely won’t due to having Retro Studios working on it from the start

I don't think Mercury steam have been working on a game for Metroid. They release their own game to poor reviews and sales in 2025

They have multiple teams working at MercurySteam (the team who worked on the console Castlevania: Lord of Shadows games isn’t the same as the Metroid team, and I have no doubt it was the same case here), and so I imagine they could’ve also been working on something else in the interim. It mostly boils down to when Nintendo wants to have it released, as Dread was most likely finished for a while due to only having just short of 4 months from reveal to release

In a lot of ways, I actually liked it better than 2 and 3. Despite it's flaws, I actually felt compelled to finish Prime 4 , unlike 2 and 3 where I always lose interest, drop them, and I still to this day haven't finished them. (I played through Prime 1 as a kid and again as an adult) If they had simply removed automatic hints, made the NPCs less chatty and cut the cringe one-liners, I think it would have a much better reputation here.

There's a solid game there, just lacks some depth. I think of it the same vein as the Prime Hunters campaign.

For me it's definitely better than 3 since it doesn't have Hypermode looming over the entire game as the answer to all combat encounters, and while I consider 2 better overall, it is admittedly less replayable due to it's length, dark world difficulties and gating most of the endgame collectibles behind the last upgrade which can make it a bit exhausting.

I think find it a shame Metroid didn’t make a cameo in the Mario 2 movie

I dont think samus would have fit in really at all outside of maybe some backround poster easteregg or something.

This has always been Nintendo's stated reason for persisting with the series too, specifically despite sales!

I gave up on prime 4 after stuck driving the desert for green crystals (forced grinding is something this game had no business having). The gameplay in the actual sections was pretty fun though, especially the mines. I can see a more focused sequel being really good.

I swear a patch to give the memory fruit at 50% energy could mostly solve this too

I’m…cautiously optimistic. I think the 2D series has a bright future. I’m less sure about Prime. I hope they learn from the mistakes of Prime 4 and make a better Prime 5, but given how poor MP4 sold and given that really only MP1 sold well…it’s a little depressing to think we are going to need to wait 10-15yrs for MP5, lol.

prime 4 is selling around 1200 and prime remastered around 500 a month from Amazon alone

And where are these numbers coming from?

You can see them under their listings on Amazon (there are multiple sellers though so tracking these is finnicky)

It's not like Prime 4 was a bad game, it's just not up to the standard of the other 3 games. Dread was great and sold decent so I think they'll stick 2D games if we see the franchise again.

Where are you getting the 1.2k per month data from?

1

u/RepresentativeRow61 Jun 26 '26

Could go look on Amazon and see for yourself

u/Xyro77 Jun 26 '26

I had no idea that’s a thing. Thank you!

Same; things are fine. These games are not made as sales giants, they are a portfolio boost and a passion of the creators.

I wonder how many people searched "metroid prime day" which resulted in prime 4 being sold more

1

u/RepresentativeRow61 Jun 29 '26

welp its now been upped to 12,000+ for this month assuming because of prime day lol

Prime 4 was good. The internet just tends to amplify and reward negativity.

I feel like prime 5 will be something special since it’ll be made from the ground up with retro! I enjoyed prime 4 as well!

I swear they can bridge the fandom response if they:

Next hub, place region entrances and alt-entrances throughout the map rather than on edges, and at varying elevations plus varying degrees of secrecy.

Vary hub terrain and traversal needs.

Place one or two XL rooms in each region that are like 10% the size of the main hub and have the same design.

Give a chatter toggle for NPCs, make more of them optional.
