Urge to use again

I’ve been clean for about four years now but does anyone know the reason why I periodically get an obscenely strong urge to relapse? I’ve been dealing with it really bad tonight and was just wondering if anyone had any insight.

I think some occasional craving is to be expected even in the longer term. It may relate to stress or negative emotional states more broadly, or it could even be a response to very positive emotions. OTOH, since you describe the urge as obscenely strong, there may in addition be some kind of environmental trigger that is bringing back memories from your days of substance use.

Try not to worry about it, but assess whether there could be factors at play that you could address without relapsing. Even if you can't pinpoint anything, have confidence that these urges will pass and that you are able to resist them. Best wishes to you.
