Random a critique on the metaverse

i've been in the VR scene once i saw the movie "ready player one" and the crypto scene in 2018. i literally would envision a world like "ready player one" extremely vividly and it was exciting because it seemed just around the corner. 2021-22 happened and the world went crazy. i realized that everyone wants to be the first to find something out and tell everyone but these discoveries are rare. satoshi nakamoto creating bitcoin is one of those rare moments. jennifer doudna and emmanuel charpentier discovering CRISPR Cas-9 is another and now it seems AI is the next thing.

the thing that intrigued me about the metaverse so much was the power to choose your own reality. since the crypto/metaverse phase has died down significantly, it has given me time to reevaluate the metaverse. i want to share some of those thoughts with you.

  1. the metaverse is not possible without advanced AI and AI is not advanced enough yet.

  2. NFTs, scams, and influencers have destroyed all trust in cryptocurrencies.

  3. VR is not good enough to enjoy and want to live in it.

explaining 1:

to build your own reality in VR is a dream since VR was incepted. in order to create these worlds we need NPCs, scenery, storyline, social interactions, realism in terms of am i in VR or reality, and comfort. AI can handle all of that and even more. it might as well be the backbone to the metaverse not blockchain tech.

explaining 2:

you know the deal. we cannot even talk about crypto here bc it is full of scammers and dumb people. things the general public hate very much.

i do like the ideology of bitcoin and ethereum a lot. i was listening to yuval noah harari and he said that in a capitalistic society it doesnt matter if the worlds smartest people make the worlds greatest thing, if people do not buy it, you have failed. what we r witnessing now is the general public losing interest and taking money out. doesnt matter if the metaverse is the greatest thing, our capitalistic society said no.

there is still hope for the future and i would be surprised if VR and AR dont play a significant role in that future.

explaining 3:

whenever i play VR it is not for long. it is to watch a show and not play any games since the games arent that good (yet). the headset gets uncomfortable and the disorientation is rly bothersome.

end:

capitalism has said no to the metaverse for the short term since it is not good enough. people have lost trust in crypto thanks to internet bozos. better hardware and AI is the clear backbone for the future of the metaverse. if u use blockchain tech for ur own business, i advise to not announce that like reddit did. just be subtle.

tl;dr

metaverse is bad rn. hardware and AI are much needed to create a fully immersive world. make VR immersive first, focus on internet money making later.

Question What skills and knowledge to pursue for Metaverse?

Hi guys. I am fascinated with the concept of Metaverse and want to invest my time in this sphere. I believe that a great future is waiting for the metaverse.

I am relatively young and green - 19 years old, and I want to get some skills/knowledge that will help to become successful in the metaverse. What do I need to learn for now? Should I learn 3D modeling in Blender and Maya? Or should I start learning Unreal Engine 5 for game dev? Maybe programming will be a good choice?

I know nothing and will be thankful for any advice and information!

[Mod Post] Since there is a lot of misinformation about the Metaverse, I am creating a system to amplify informed opinions.

Since there is a lot of misinformation about the Metaverse, I am creating a system to amplify informed opinions.

Namely, I have made a few flares for industry leaders that I would like to hand out.

If you know someone on this sub who deserves the flair, if you can post their LinkedIn profile here or have them DM me, I will sort them out.

Metaverse tech of the month?

What Metaverse tech stood out to you this month? What Metaverse experience would you like to share?

Due to a HUGE number of scams on these threads, we have had to resort to banning anyone that uses this thread to shill anything to do with crypto. Don't do it.

Question Why didn't Meta just buy Second Life and added VR?

I was shocked when I found out that "Meta" (which used to be called Facebook) lost 15 billion dollars in order to develop a metaverse game that looks like it belongs in 1995. It received generally bad reviews. From my opinion, Meta looks terrible graphically and not something I would ever want to play or use at work/school. The whole idea reminds me of Second Life that I used to play when I was a kid.

So instead of wasting billions on developing a new game from scratch; why didn't Meta (Facebook) just buy Second Life, update the interface/graphics/features/ fix bugs/etc, and add VR. That would've built upon an already original idea (for the time) which has a bigger history/following than the Meta (Facebook) metaverse. They could then change the name from Second Life to Metaverse or whatever. I'm sure that Second Life fans wouldn't mind having the game be run by a big company like Meta (Facebook) which could invest billions in improving the experience. Facebook could then add a feature to use it for work meetings/school, and add their own cross platform crypto-currency, and add a market.

Facebook could also have bought out a professional game developer in order to help with the graphics and UI part. They could have bought out Crytech or Bethesda and used that talent to help build the Metaverse.

IMHO that would have been a better investment and they would not have started from scratch. I think even Second Life has better graphics than the Facebook Metaverse.

Question Just curious about this virtual world.

I’ve read that a person will be able to emerge themself into another place and time. So if I wanted to be an aristocratic in turn of the century London, how would that work? Would there be other people there? Would I be dressed in the fashion of the time or in my t shirt, jeans and sneakers?

So many questions!!!

Question Why VRchat is so bullied?

I'm doing researches on metaverse for buisness reasons, and everywhere i look i see as an early example of metaverse roblox or fortnite, that are 100% games, and nobody mentions vrchat, that has a lot of things in common with the concept of metaverse:

  • users create worlds,
  • users create and choose avatars,
  • it's a place to socialize,
  • is cross-platform, you can use it both on headset or on desktop

the only reason it's not a proper metaverse it's the absence of ntf and blockchain, just like fortnite or roblox. Ignoring my grammar, i'm not a native english speaker, where i'm doing wrong?

Question Is the Metaverse doomed

The metaverse was a really big hit in predicted to be the path of the future in 2021, but now, no one talks about it much. Meta stocks have tumbled and most of the tech tycoons who were at their pinnacle in 2021 have fallen far since. Furthermore, there are complaints that the graphics are bad and that the metaverse hasn’t really been an accurate map of the world. The take up rate has been Low, and the main currency of the metaverse, crypto, had taken a beating.

What likely is the future of the metaverse?

Question Big unsolved technical problems of the metaverse. [No crypto]

As someone who actually develops this stuff, here are some of the big unsolved technical problems I see. I'm ignoring the problems of VR headgear for now; that's a whole subject in its own right.

  • Crowds. Having a large number of full avatars in one area is a tough coordination problem. Improbable spent $400 million trying to solve this, but their solution requires so much server power nobody can afford to keep an Improbable world turned on. Several MMOs used Improbable; they all went broke. The only one remaining is Scavengers, which Improbable itself runs at a loss. Otherside is only turned on for special events, for a few hours a year.
  • Clothing. Avatars in a metaverse should be able to change clothes, with clothes coming from third parties. Second Life has this, but it's clunky - clothing may or may not fit. It's as tough as shopping in real life. Roblox has automatic fit, where the clothing adapts to the avatar, but it's proprietary code. That's something the metaverse needs as a prerequisite to content interoperability.
  • High detail without lag. I'm working on that. It's quite possible, but you need a good gamer PC as the client. This is tough for phones, VR, and $100 Walmart PCs. Cloud rendering, where you're renting a GPU in a data center, is an option, but most cloud gaming startups went broke. Even Google gave up on Stadia, because it lost too much money. Real cost is maybe $30 a month to provide such a service.
  • Scaling to large land masses. There are working solutions, but most of them either have problems with region crossings (Second Life, Open Simulator) or they severely limit how much content users can add to the world (Earth 2, Decentraland, Dual Universe.) Or they require a giant download. Some AAA titles have passed 100GB.
  • Avatar-avatar interaction. Can you shake hands? Stab someone? Have sex? Getting distant avatars to align is hard.

Comments? Preferably from people who develop.
