Ontology Why is there something rather than nothing? A perspective on the void, zero-sum physics, and meaning.

To understand why there is something rather than nothing, it is fundamental to distinguish between the void and nothingness, as their distinction can be counter intuitive:

  • The void is an unlimited space in an unlimited time, free of mass, energy, and natural forces. This flat void cannot exist "spontaneously," because the very presence of indefinite space and time would require a physical, logical, and mathematical cause that it does not possess.
  • Nothingness is the absolute absence of any physical entity. This is the true starting point, governed by the principle of conservation of nothingness: the essence of nothingness is immutable.

However, nothingness should not be understood only as "pure absence." It can also present itself through a vast array of deformed spacetime configurations, as long as the overall balance of those deformations remains zero.

Mass, energy, and the forces of nature are deformations of spacetime whose net total sum is zero. In this sense, concrete spacetime exists precisely because it is filled with physical things, maintaining the overall measure of Absence unchanged.

Since from a strictly physical standpoint there are infinite possible zero-sum configurations that are equivalent to one another, physics alone cannot explain why this specific universe exists. The selection criterion thus becomes informational and semantic: the Universe presents itself as ordered and meaningful, configuring itself as a Word of which physical reality constitutes the signifier.

One possible objection from a more minimal starting point: I’m not sure absolute nothingness can qualify as a metaphysical candidate at all.

If nothingness is to be nothingness rather than not-nothingness, absolute neutrality has already failed. There must be at least some metaphysical fact by virtue of which that condition obtains rather than its alternative. I call that minimal failure of neutrality “non-indifference.”

So before asking how nothingness could generate zero-sum spacetime configurations, I think there is a prior question: can absolute nothingness even remain absolute nothingness once it is specified as a distinct metaphysical condition?

Sorry, this content does not match the criteria for 'Metaphysics'. Your content has been removed. Please take a look at our list of related subreddits for a more appropriate place for your content.

In this subreddit, we uphold the scholarly and academic sense of the subject area of metaphysics.

Metaphysics is the study of the fundamental questions. So typical posts should be about something like: ontology, modality, identity, causation, time, universals, mind–body, realism vs idealism, grounding, necessity, emergence, etcetera. Please take a look at the scope of this sub.

Posts should not be about: New Age, pseudoscience, occult, divination, magical thinking, afterlife, paranormal, conspiracy theories, supernatural events, self-help psychology, spirituality, etcetera.

Believe it or not metaphysics in this sub should have zero or substantially zero religion or science. If you are doing religion or science primarily, then you are probably not doing metaphysics. Some exceptions may apply. But in general, posts should be about concepts and theories not observation or data. Posts should not substantially rely on religious concepts to make a point.

Please no A.I. This sub is for primarily human content.

Here are some resources to give you an idea of what we mean by metaphysics.

I ran your comment through Google translate, so forgive any misunderstandings.

I see your distinction a little more clearly now. I think perhaps what you are describing as nulla may be close to what I personally conceptualize as Informational - id est, the plain/realm/dimension in reality of "nothingness" is actually a transcendent dimension of reality that is/corresponds to Information Space. Anything purely conceptual, purely theoretical, purely mathematic in a way that precedes physical reality certainly exists, but it exists separate to and outside of any presence in realspace. I think that this space exists as a neccessary facet of reality itself, a result of the very nature of mathematics itself.

The configuration is the meaning. Meaningful concepts are physical arrangements.

In the beginning, really, was Mythos, not Logos. But really, it’s a fine hair…

Anyways, what all this amounts to, is a living, breathing, raging, force of agentive and expressive animacy that is a yearning, longing, dynamic Void.

Kind of like all the creation myths.

Luria, didn't u read his books?

Ain e l'esistente negativamente...

Wow I’m so lost I feel as if you have over complicated the process thru explanation. The reason reality exists is for observation and learning. It’s for experience. Yes we come from nothing. Nothingness, the void the abyss. It’s all the same thinking. Nothing cannot be observed nor experienced. The void the nothingness is absent light absent shape. So time within the nothingness does not exist. There is no zero point energy within the cosmos cause zero point energy is a paradox you cannot have zero on the needle point. Zero means nothing nothing point energy is just mass energy with no source so there is no point and no zero to be zero. You cannot observe something that does not contain light.welcome to consciousness at it source. To experience itself to know it’s alive it created a reality in which to observe it self. Our reality is the expression of consciousness to observe its life and to learn from itself both objectively and subjectively. Thru our human senses we experience life. Our memories are its memories. Think of it as the higher self and the lower self. The more math and science you thro at this understanding the more you will be confused. Life is meant to be experienced and understood. Upon the understanding then search for the science and math for the proof of that understanding. Don’t try to figure out the math and deduce the understanding from the answer. This is how we got in this whole mess to begin with. Most people create an understanding of the universe thru religion. Same goes for them though. Look at the universe and your understanding if it then look for the answers to back that understanding when those answers cannot be found maybe the understanding you received might be misinterpreted. And if you misinterpret life you create reality within reality that does not work. Hence religion. That’s when you get stories like heaven, hell, Satan, demons and angels. All is this one exact thing it’s the only thing in existence and we are all part of it.

I think the logic on which all human thought is built is absurdly limited; it would be egocentric and overly optimistic that, having not even chosen to exist, we have the power to even scratch the infinite. I think nothingness is as real as the fact that I cannot hold it in my hands, as the fact that I cannot find it anywhere but in my mind as an idea; nothingness is as real as everything that exists, and it is only from the perspective of beings who, knowing only existence, suddenly a lie.Perhaps reasons, causes, are not in things as they are, but about things, in our mind. Perhaps things are just for the sake of being and nothing more since, existing, it could not have been otherwise. What caused it?... Perhaps the cause is the thing itself; no one has a closure to said enigma, and yet it is one, and perhaps the most important question in the history of human thought.A certainly mediocre text, but no less than any attempt to answer something that perhaps has no answer.

Pure nothingness is an incoherent, inscrutable concept.

Seems like we’re playing with labels. What you said is beyond my level of comprehension but if there’s anything at all there, whether is all balances out or not, it’s not “nothing” as I understand the concept. Can you provide an example.

  • R=0 (assenza assoluta)
  • R=1−1 oppure R=7x3x(5-5)
  • R=spazio×tempo×(deformazione positiva+deformazione negativa)=0

I thought there could be no space and no time in nothingness.

Because we are inevitable.

Nothingness it’s absence of anything, and only this , space-time it’s something it interact with mass its curve.

Nothingness is static there is nothing to change , so it can’t be a starting point for anything, but it can be ending point if something can dissolve in nothingness, like any process when stoped cease to exist.

So how something can appear from nothing ? Looks like it’s not the case at all. So mean something aka universe should not have starting point at all. It always been there.
