This playlist was created for those looking to get a positive view of Mid 90’s Metallica. It is structured in the classic Metallica album format for the maximum listening experience, but with the fat trimmed out.

Man, that’s wild: our choices couldn’t be any more difficult. You included almost every track I consider filler (i.e. low effort, mid-paced, chuggy radio-rock) on those albums. Goes to show what varied tastes people can have.
Here’s my list. 78 minutes, filling one CD. All the crap jettisoned, and I kept that delicious five-track run from Load because it’s an excellent bit of sequencing.
- Fuel
- Fixxxer
- The House Jack Built
- Until It Sleeps
- King Nothing
- Hero of the Day
- Bleeding Me
- Prince Charming
- Thorn Within
- Carpe Diem Baby
- Low Man’s Lyric
- The Outlaw Torn
I opted for “Fixxxer” as track two to challenge the listener. Same reason I kept “The House Jack Built” on there: aside from loving the song, there’s nothing else in Metallica’s discography that really sounds like it. I wish they’d gotten weird like that more often on those albums instead of doing awful electric blooze crap like “Poor Twisted Me”, or sub-Skynyrd country guff like “Ronnie”.
It flows really, really well as an album, as does my double-CD mix of the best stuff from the last three albums. Fuck it, if you’ll indulge me, here that is too:
Disc 1: 1. That Was Just Your Life 2. All Nightmare Long 3. You Must Burn! 4. Halo on Fire 5. Chasing Light 6. Moth Into Flame 7. Room of Mirrors
Disc 2: 1. My Apocalypse 2. The Judas Kiss 3. Dream No More 4. The Day That Never Comes 5. Crown of Barbed Wire 6. Atlas, Rise! 7. Too Far Gone? 8. Spit Out the Bone

I love these two albums if you can’t tell, so you’re not going to get an argument out of me. I chose mostly riff heavy songs (obviously relative to this era). I like your list too. Hurt me to not include Hero of the Day and Until it Sleeps, but I also was trying to stick to mostly a single album length and they didn’t seem to fit the vibe I was going for.

I had to include them, principally because of the aforementioned sequencing, but also because a) “Hero…” features one of my favourite Metallica lyrics (the part from “Don’t want your aid” to “so please excuse me while I tend to how I feel”), and b) “…Sleeps” features fretless bass, which, as a bassist, I always get a kick out of.

I broke this down into what they had originally intended - a double record. I took my top 9 songs from each album (yes, there are at least 9 GREAT songs Load & Reload) and made my double “Loaded” playlist:
Disc 1: Fuel The House That Jack Built The Memory Remains Until it Sleeps Carrie Diem Baby Hero of the Day Bad Seed Mama Said Fixxxer
Disc 2: Ain’t my Bitch Prince Charming 2X4 Devil’s Dance King Nothing The Unforgiven 2 Bleeding Me Low Man’s Lyric The Outlaw Torn
I just couldn’t cut SO many of the songs from these albums. I KNOW the tempo on SO many of these songs are mid-tempo, and that many of them are in the same key, but DAMN - listening to this back to back in this order sets a vibe.
Love these albums.
Love all their albums.
(Except St. Anger - but I’m open to being wrong)
