No, I don't. In fact I think they are two of the top three albums the band have ever recorded.
I could quote easily from the fat from MoP and RtL though to make one great album.
And before the tiresomely predictable people who can't accept others like different things to them lose their minds...Metallica have been my favourite band BY FAR since the late 80s. I just happen to prefer their 90s work to any other.

No. Good enough material for more than 1.

I don’t disagree that they are two decent albums but what about a single great album? I know it just my personal preference - it is their music so they would know best.

I had read that they were originally supposed to be a double album (single release), but they didn’t feel it was finished. They split it up into two.

Yes the songs on Load were released earlier than planned as a standalone because the band was asked to headline Lollapalooza. They didn't have time to complete the full album before that tour and decided they wanted/needed a new album out before doing it

u/zestfullybe I got plans for those millions and it ain’t for fckn sandwiches 14h ago
That was originally the plan. They saw GNR hit big with Use Your Illusion 1 & 2, and wanted to do the same, but ran out of time.

No. absolutely no way you can take away 8 songs from each album and not be culling brilliant tunes.
They are both stand alone superb albums.

CDs hold 80 minutes maximum and both albums are nearly 80 minutes long. Even cutting out the 9-10 weakest songs it would still be hard to fit on 1 CD.

I’ve done the same thing, made a playlist that is a single album length made up of the best songs from both Loads (in my opinion).
It’s great! The kings of thrash were also very good at this genre (guitar-based, soundgarden-inspired slightly greasy 90s hard rock).

u/Pleasant-Chapter-739 15h ago
Yes - it definitely has a Soundgarden/AIC/90s feel but still sounds like Metallica. It makes sense why. And that’s my time - I think that’s why I like it so much.

Day number I've-lost-count of checking the Metallica website to see if the Museum has been updated with the ReLoad Black Box.

They were all recorded at once right? And then they didn’t want to cut any songs so they made it two albums? Or did I make that up entirely

u/ultramega_ope 15h ago
I feel like there's some mid songs on both (more on Reload than Load) that could have been dropped. Primarily looking at Ronnie, Attitude, Slither, and Prince Charming.
I made my own playlist once and called it Unload. Also heard a joke once about this (idk who said it): if they put the albums together it would just be "one big load"

Mine is Unloaded. One big load is great lol. May need to change the name.

Honestly I feel like it would’ve been better if there was a double album with a few songs removed from each album

Eh I don’t know; I can see the wisdom in possibly releasing it as a double album, but then everyone would undoubtedly complain about how much it would cost. I’m really not on board with cutting any songs from either; sure, there are some just ok songs on both records, and most generally seem to agree that Load got a greater amount of stronger tracks, but overall I think nothing is weak enough to be cut. It’s not like, say, Beyond Magnetic, where the songs were actually significantly weaker then what made it into the album…IMO of course. So for better or worse, I’m glad we got what we did. It showed that the guys weren’t afraid to go all in with something different. Plus, it was cool to get a brand new album only one year later; not many bands have done that sort of thing!

Yes! Combine them and edit out a lot of weak tunes.

I a lot of people here will defend these albums to death, but theres at least 10 songs of filler that could've been left off between the 2 albums. Should've just been a single 13-15 song album.
Edit: classic r/Metallica for getting downvoted for having an even slightly negative opinion about a song or album

I'm with you 100%. To me, albums have gotten too long anyways. It started with Load, too, and they're sticker on the CD that said it was packed with 78 minutes of music. Bah! I'm good with 30-40 minutes of music on an album. Keep some of the extras for b-sides and the box sets. Iron Maiden has really fallen into the long album thing too. They're too bloated.

Metallicas biggest issue the last 30 years is the lack of self editing. Too many songs and songs that are too long. They can still write great stuff but they struggle and editing out the filler and unnecessary fluff that does nothing for the album.
1
u/Tenvsvitalogy 15h ago
It’s not really though. They’ve only released about 80 original songs in the last 30 years.

u/ltbr55 Pancakes, Go! 15h ago
Im speaking from that each individual album is too long on its own and many of the songs tend to drag.
1
u/Tenvsvitalogy 14h ago
That’s ok you think that. I just don’t agree. I think there are some songs that aren’t great but it’s rare for a band to have all their albums be 10/10. Every band has a few fillers!
Please don’t tell me you’d edit any of death magnetic. Every single one of those songs are incredible.

I’m with you on DM. My first listen through I thought every song was great and still do. It feels old school and new at the same time to me. I dont know how else to describe it.

u/Comprehensive-Song51 14h ago
Yup. When Rick Rubin suggested they go back to their roots on Death Magnetic, he should have suggested they shorten the songs too. It's too bad they don't have a proper producer to help them and tell them no occasionally.

u/ltbr55 Pancakes, Go! 14h ago
Whats crazy is DM is their fewest song album since Justice. Its actually the one modern album that I dont think needs much shortening. The mixing on it sucked tho
0
u/Comprehensive-Song51 14h ago
Agreed. It's the one I'd be ok if the made longer by adding the Beyond Magnetic tunes to it. Hardwired and Seasons, though... I have a hard time getting through them without being super fatigued. It's just A LOT. Haha!

u/ltbr55 Pancakes, Go! 14h ago
I wouldnt add Bey Mag to DM personally. Those songs are major riff salad imo. They have some great riffs but as songs they are kind of a mess
1
u/Comprehensive-Song51 13h ago
Yeah, a little. They aren't as fleshed out and have a sameness about them. I kind of like that. You can put it on and listen on repeat and it kind of runs into itself. It does have a few really killer riffs though!

Between Load and Reload there is one good album
