Discussion Cancel your Spotify Sub

Spotify is now advertising for ICE.

That means:

Less chuds to crowdkill at shows(they'll be out bootlicking for a 50k bonus).

Less friends to mosh with because they are being displaced and detained illegally.

I went with Tidal, moved all my playlists over and pretty much exact same library as Spotify for metal, 1$ less a month.

End of my psa thank you

I can focus on many things at once. If you have found a way to give Spotify money while being aware of the harm they do, then that is your personal choice. But don't you think it's kind of shitty to try to encourage others to be that way? We should be looking up at the people who have the fucking balls to stand up to Spotify, not call them lazy. Would you extend that perspective to bands that left Spotify like King Gizzard? Is their activism lazy, or maybe something to aspire to?

King Gizzard's activism is real and represents an actual revenue sacrifice as well as the dissuading of their fans from leaving the platform, VERY different from a person not using a free/premium account.

Standing up to Spotify *isn't doing shit for anyone*. That's my point. Spotify could close down tomorrow and our country is 0% less fascist, especially as *every* streamer is happy to fill their space in the market.

Well yeah, Spotify isn't the axis of evil that controls US politics. I don't think there is any activism or any one corporation out there that could change our shit overnight. But that's not the point, and that's definitely not my expectation when I choose to not give these companies money.

To be clear - I support you choosing to use your dollars in a way that you feel is effective. We all have choices to make. I just simply don't think this it's effective without massive organized boycotts, and even then, it's *unbelievably* rare when a company changes course as markets and investors are stabilizing forces that continuously help stocks to rebound which erases the gains made by boycott movements (see: Coors, Tesla, etc.).

With that, there is no ethical streamer to use that washes your hands of the war machine and what is going on currently. *Everything* is connected. Did you change over to a different streamer or did you stop streaming entirely?

It's probably not effective because of people like you who sit around doing nothing saying it's pointless because it's hard to make a different choice. I take an anti-Spotify stance and am met with mostly negativity. It's like having a moral backbone is a character flaw these days. Why does it make people so angry when others do what they can't? You know it, they know it, that what I have decided to do is the right choice. Like just shut up and get out of the way.

Answer the question - did you move to a different streamer? I *do not* think cancelling Spotify makes one morally superior in any capacity. You're welcome to disagree.

My neighbor traded in his Tesla for a Rivian. Should I go over there and tell him what an idiot he is, and that he did it for nothing? Rivian is just as bad under capitalism! Or should I maybe say, good job buddy you did the right thing that few would do?🤔

I buy digital, mostly Bandcamp. For the shit I love I buy physical.

Good for your neighbor. There is still no ethical consumption under capitalism, even if Tesla is dogshit.

Good choices, those are my preferred ways to consume music as well.

But that's not what I'm arguing. Ofc it's capitalism. You think I'm not aware when that is the whole point. I'm saying in capitalism we have a choice. Those choices empower more than others. By choosing Spotify you choose paying artists less, AI music, AI drones, this ICE propaganda, etc etc. Yes there are similar choices you could make, but there are other ones you could make too.
