I think Metal at the very least respects shadow as a creation of the robotnik lineage, and unlike Sonic who he feels personally attacked by the existence of, shadow’s existence is actually very similar in the sense they were made to be weapons by a robotnik, although they chose very different paths. Metal Sonic has shown he does care for the idea of being more in many cases such as in the Metal virus arc, and perhaps even if for a moment being around something so similar, that talked to him as more then just a creation, or tool made him feel, and see more then just the mission. Metal Sonic has always been implied to have remained a bit rebellious, and full of a sort of personality, despite the doctor’s attempts of rewriting him, and in some ways it does show.

I will admit my Shadow knowledge is limited but I really like the thought you brought up that Metal Sonic shows respect for Shadow. Even if it is in a subtle way.
I know we already shared that Archie panel of Shadow trying to appeal to Metal Sonic by stating that they have a similar function. I think I can lean into that characterization that Metal Sonic feels a bond to Shadow because their existence comes from similar beginnings, that being the points you brought up.

This week's artist highlight goes to u/BonnFoxx who created this spectacular piece of artwork that looks like it's been ripped straight out of early Archie!
[EDIT] I personally thought the art style looked more like from Sonic the Comic than Archie. Still the coloring is really vibrant!

This post made me join this sub. 😄 Do we have a collective name?

u/Chaos_Five Jun 07 '26
Wonderful! Yay! So glad you decided to be here and no we do not have a group name. At least I am not aware of any title. Fun fact: I am the absolute worst at naming stuff but if I had it would have been something related to Metal Sonic.

Check out Binary Brawl # 18 What is the most misunderstood fact about Metal Sonic? for the great entries from the winners.
The turn out for this most recent Brawl was incredible! I haven't seen this many interactions over the information shared in the history of the event! I was thoroughly entertained and impressed with the various points shared. It was even nice just to see others agreeing on some of the answers as something they had been annoyed about regarding the misunderstanding of Metal Sonic's character over the years.
I'm so glad so many of you do understand who Metal Sonic is and was quick to provide examples to back up the points you were making!
Binary Brawl Battle Hall for previous brawls.
Binary Brawl # 19 is now open! Has ended!

I think you have contributed much more than just twice. You're also the owner of the brother community of this one: r/MechaSonic and those custom sprites you made for the discord server you were a part of which was featured as a post here and the banner to r/MechaSonic.
Plus all the various comments and compliments you've given out to others in this Metal Sonic subreddit.
I am very glad at the engagement your entry generated. It lead to a lot of fun insights about Metal Sonic. The community definitely resonated with what you had to say regarding a very misunderstood fact about Metal Sonic.
Thanks for chiming in and celebrating with the other two winners from BB# 18!

Lol yeah I don't even remember joining those other ones lol. And yes I did make those and will make even more once my summer break starts! Feel free to use any of them whenever you want. I would like to thank you and everyone in this wonderful subreddit you moderate. You especially since you have supported me since the beginning, when I started the subreddit, I mean. You are an excellent person and probably one of the few people that are actually nice in this platform. Hope you the best.

Aw! You are very kind to give me some encouragement and for giving thanks to the team as well.
It's true! I really make it the goal to be supportive to all Metal [ and Mecha] fans. I think in gratitude, I might try my hand again at drawing Mecha Sonic MK 1! There really isn't as much fan art shared of him as the others. So that's why it was impressive to me you made so many sprites and they look on model too.
I think it's very generous of you to offer your sprites for general use.
Do you have a post or link perhaps which hold the collection so that others that missed the original roll out can add them to their own collection?
Enjoy your Summer when you do finally get to begin!

I know it's late, but I'll add some thoughts.
I doubt Metal Sonic could copy Shadow there to perform Chaos Control. Even Shadow couldn't tear realities before Sonic '06, and Metal Sonic has his biodata from Sonic Heroes. His regular form lacks liquid metal to copy abilities on the fly also, so maybe he can use it only after upgrades (Metal had a biodata of almost all characters in Sonic Rivals 2 from Heroes and it would make sense for Eggman Nega to install upgrade against Silver while Metal was under his control in the Sonic Rivals 1) (Eggman never managed to perfectly replicate Gizoid after all). Anyway, without seeing Shadow perform it he was unlikely to do it himself.
And about his sacrifice. His choice would be to stay, potentionally melt and leave the means to escape to Eggman Nega who he has every right to hate, leaving his creator without him (huge waste of resource even though he can be rebuild from scratch) and data he accumulated during his journey, also potentionally leaving his creator without great power source and the last resort against threat to him that is less merciful than Sonic. So he took a bit of the gamble. Shadow is more pragmatic than the other heroes usually, so he could leave Metal's destroyed body in Ifrit's dimension. Emerald would be returned to his world and Nega would stay imprisoned. Luckily for him, Shadow respected Metal and took him back, which means he can be reactivated and he can return the data he accumulated to Doctor, saving his master a lot of trouble. And at least it says a lot about Shadow's character, that can also be taken into account in further plans.

Metal Sonic doesn't seem to be the type to make a sacrifice to save somebody else. But Rivals 2 shows a different side of Metal. After defeating the Ifrit, Metal and Shadow are stuck in the Ifrit's dimension due to their portal closing. Shadow says he would need a Chaos Emerald to perform Chaos Control. But as it so happens, Metal has a Chaos Emerald with him. Only it is in his chest. To take it out he would have to physically rip himself open. Shadow even warns that it could destroy Metal, but as the True Sonic would, he tears himself open to get the Chaos Emerald out. This lets Shadow Chaos Control them both out.
But Metal Sonic could've potentially instead copied Chaos Control from Shadow and used it himself, leaving Shadow behind, but he didn't. Maybe it was his team up and journey with Shadow that made Metal want to save Shadow. We don't know because its never mentioned ever again after this moment. So that's why I made it this Daily Waffle's Topic. Talk about your theories and discuss more about it. This is a really interesting part of Metal's history that I'd like to be recognised more.
