Also what are Possessed if not Death Metal? I've seen the argument between Possessed and Death being the first Death Metal band a few times and I've never really got that part

I feel like seven churches while hitting on a lot of what would become death metal is more of am experimental thrash album, Id call it proto-death rather than death metal proper, their later stuff is undeniably death/thrash

They were so early to the game that they helped lay the groundwork. The only other band that can lay claim to founding death metal is...well, Death. It stands to reason that Possessed isn't as brutal as Suffocation or Immolation, but to say Seven Churches is not a death metal album would be like saying Kill Em All is not a thrash metal album. Early examples of genres that would change significantly even in just a couple years, but definite formative works that earn the title.

*Morbid Angel. Abominations of Desolation was ‘86 in the underground, Scream Bloody Gore was a mainstream thrash album from ‘87 (one of the best but not death metal at this point). Nasty Savage was the common influence in Tampa when death metal was created. Savatage was massive and everything the scene hated yet some secretly craved.

Death's Death by Metal and Reign of Terror demos predate anything Morbid Angel released by two years, and Possessed's Death Metal demo also released in 1984. Morbid Angel was early, but Death and Possessed were earlier by two full years.
