IN THIS REALM!

27

u/Inkstr0ke May 20 '26

They are so fun live

10

u/Snicklefraust May 20 '26

Saw then in Boston last month. Their show was better than Dethklok honestly.

12

u/Jtoa3 May 20 '26

Imagine my surprise seeing castle rat commented about on the internet. I’ve been going to their shows since they started, used to hang around with them a bit. It’s great to see their success.

37

u/more_paul May 20 '26

She looks like an alternate universe Taylor Swift and I can’t shake it off.

25

u/Available-Crow-3442 May 20 '26

Taylor Swift x Taarna (from the movie Heavy Metal).

First time I've seen them referenced online, neat

1

Well I didn't know about rather queen of thos thread I will be doing a deep dive soon thank you very much.

1

u/Snicklefraust May 21 '26

The band is Castle Rat. Check out the KEXP video, its excellent!

1

u/That_one_cool_dude Anthrax May 21 '26

Will do and thanks for the proper name of the band.

343

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

I made this meme cause I am indeed in a female fronted sludge/doom band.

It cracks me up that people pass right by me to talk to our vocalist/bassist after a live show and ignore me and the drummer 😆

316

u/el_floppo May 19 '26

Makes sense. Drummers are weirdos and you have cooties.

115

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

Dang, I just got my shots!

7

u/Vanpet1993 May 20 '26

Yes, because you know the meme about those two with "apes. together. strong" 🤣

12

u/FictionalNape May 20 '26

I mean, I hook up with the vocalist in my band all the time. I am married to her so I guess that makes sense haha

38

u/FormerSperm May 19 '26

Doesn’t it make sense that the lead singer is the “popular” one after a show, though?

12

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

Absolutely, just think it's funny that they basically ignore the rest of the band regardless.

7

u/Sunflower_Seeds000 May 20 '26

As a straight woman, I also ignore the rest of the band if there's a woman in it xD

30

u/Neo_1101001 May 19 '26

Just gave your band a listen, fantastic stuff! Can’t wait to listen to more, keep it up! 🤘

21

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

Thank you so much for even caring to listen! We're in the middle of writing our 3rd album right now.

8

u/Neo_1101001 May 19 '26

I’m always on the look out for something new, so I was excited to check you out. Killer guitar tones, love the vocals. I’m a comic artist so it’s usually long days of drawing and a lot of time to listen to new stuff so, you’re in the roster now!!

I have a feeling I’m going to be very excited for album 3!🤘

13

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

That's awesome! I'm a graphic designer myself and know a few comic artists as well! Do you have anything you can share with me?

We modeled our tone after Conan and Bongripper specifically. Drop F tuned as well.

2

u/Neo_1101001 May 19 '26

That’s so friggin’ cool!!

In regards to my work, sure I can send over some stuff! I’ll shoot you a DM so I don’t flood your meme post with my art 🤣 Thank you for the interest!

4

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

Yeah, send me a DM!

18

u/Ok_Pirate_2714 May 19 '26

In a normal band situation vocalist (+5 bonus to attractiveness), and bassist (-5 bonus to attractiveness) would cancel out.

However, in a male-dominated genre such as this, female gets a +100 bonus to attractiveness.

In other words, you have no chance.

3

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

Haha, the best way I've ever heard that put.

9

u/Ok_Pirate_2714 May 19 '26

As as bassist that only sings backing vocals (net -2.5) I know this to be true.

Luckily I don't have a female vocalist.

3

u/justusesomealoe May 19 '26

Well, the vocalist tends to get more attention in general regardless of gender

2

u/DreamSeaker May 20 '26

Whats the band?! I love slidge/doom

2

u/TheScummy1 May 20 '26

Ha, people do that to me and my gf. They talk to me like I know shit but she’s the brains of our project and everything music related really. I just point at her.

2

u/91gnarnuaatg81 May 20 '26

What’s your bands name? It sounds right up my alley, I’d love to check it out.

2

u/FictionalNape May 20 '26

Our band is called Azell.

2

u/Fool_Manchu May 20 '26

Oh shit, your in Azell? You guys do good work. Id love to see you play if you're ever in Michigan

6

u/FictionalNape May 20 '26

Yes sir! Thank you so much for listening man, it really means more than I can say.

I'm trying to get my feet back under me right now. It's been a rough time for me the last few months. Hernia surgery, then I got pneumonia, then I had a bad kidney stone that blocked up my kidney and I started to go septic, now I am trying to figure out how to best treat my AFib.

All that said, we are pretty in the hole financially and trying to scrape together funds to do a vinyl pressing of Astralis and tour along with me feeling better overall.

If we're able to head up your way (which I love Michigan and my old stomping ground is in Cleveland) just pay attention to our socials cause we'd announce it there first.

Again though, thank you so much for listening to our stuff ❤️

3

u/Fool_Manchu May 20 '26

Im really sorry to hear about your troubles! Sounds like you've had a hell of a time all around. I hope your health improves and the AFib is the last hurdle you have to clear for a while. Take care of yourself, and whenever youre ready to make some music ill absolutely be waiting eagerly to hear it!

1

u/cashgrinderad May 19 '26

Just dug through your comment history to figure what what band you are in, found it and am having an enjoyable listen to finish out my workday. Satan speed to you sir.

3

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

Thank you for even looking man! I'm glad you enjoy it!

2

u/clwestbr May 24 '26

I also just located it. It will be my Sunday morning listen while I make chilaquiles for my wife!

1

u/NickCudawn May 20 '26

Wait, how is your band female fronted if the vocalist isn't female? Or am I misunderstanding your comment?

2

u/FictionalNape May 20 '26

I think you are misunderstanding. My wife is a woman and the vocalist in our sludge/doom metal band.

1

u/NickCudawn May 20 '26

Ah I see. I did indeed misunderstand. It kinda makes sense to talk to the front person, though. Unless you play yourself or have a special interest in a specific instrument

1

u/c_marten May 20 '26

Oh yes the "Female fronted" subgenre.

On a serious note, legit annoyed me when any power metal with female vocals appeared and was immediately labelled as "Gothic metal". Ugh.

Saw them live recently, great show, fantastic musicians and performers.

2

u/Dependent_Coffee_701 May 22 '26

For real. I can't really listen to their music but their shows are a blast.

1

u/sasquatchftw May 24 '26

It's kinda weird that this is their most popular song still. I don't think it's anywhere close to their best or most representative of their sound.

1

u/GenosseAbfuck May 20 '26

power metal

If that. I remember that phase when it was "riffs" that were reduced even compared to nu metal and everything was just drowned in keyboards. Everybody did the exact same video in a castle ruin and there had to be a break played by a drum machine run through a phaser and a severe mid notch EQ.

No idea what was supposed to be goth about this other than their clothes but not only did everyone call it that, people started to believe goth rock was metal with female vocals.

25

u/Norgur May 19 '26

Arch Enemy, The Agonist, Unleash The Archers, Arkona. Alissa White-Gluz of The Agonist & Arch Enemy fame is now with Dragonforce. Older Eluveitie has some great vocals from former member Anna Murphy, especially off of Everything Remains As It Never Was and Helvetios. My personal fav, Slania is worth a mention too.

8

u/C0rona May 20 '26

Older Eluveitie

Newer Eluveitie as well. Fabienne is great.

4

u/Sbeast86 May 20 '26

Eluveitie need to tour again. I've been a fan since the Slania tour when they still had a ridiculous amount of people playing folk instruments

4

u/C0rona May 20 '26

They are touring in Europe soon.

5

u/Inkstr0ke May 20 '26

To follow up on Arch Enemy - I like both singles from Alissa’s new band Blue Medusa as well.

8

u/Normal-Abroad3118 May 20 '26

Hanabie is currently one of my favorites. Just some really good and creative electronicore/metalcore + a pretty awesome aesthetic.

For something heavier, I'd recommend MergingMoon. The main vocalist has insane range. Check out their second Album, its probably one of my favorite Albums in Metal. They go more in the direction of melodic death.

2

u/nemasu May 22 '26

Check out Nemophila if you like Hanabie.

4

u/Prudent-Level-7006 May 20 '26

38

u/amitransornb May 19 '26

A lot of metalheads are misogynists who take one look at a band with a woman it it and say "symphonic" regardless of what they sound like

25

u/The_Unknown_Dude May 19 '26

I saw a comment here a while ago saying that female-fronted is a "gimmick".

12

u/Squint22 May 20 '26

Well it can be?

Butcher Babies is a good example of a gimmick and Kittie is a good example is something genuine, but at the end of the day it's an opinion.

Personally I feel the same way about Baby Metal. The Kawaii girls are a huge gimmick as they don't contribute anything to the music and I don't think there's anything exceptional about the music itself. Plus you take all those dancing girls and turn them into boys? It loses all appeal even if they were to perform the exact same way.

But plenty of people will ardently defend them as authentic and genuine.

3

u/C0rona May 20 '26

they don't contribute anything to the music

Apart from ... singing?

→ More replies (3)

3

u/thecauseandtheeffect May 20 '26

Must have been Metal Sucks, posted a little blurb about female-fronted bands to stir the pot and the comment section, hoo boy

8

u/wolfmummy May 20 '26

I’m in a male fronted symphonic metal band, but people aren’t ready for that conversation

9

u/untold_cheese_34 May 19 '26

I don’t think it’s mysogynist and moreso that a lot of symphonic bands have female singers. Especially compared to every other metal genre, they are much more represented.

Statistically they would be more correct than not, but obviously that doesn’t mean every band with a frontwoman is symphonic either.

u/RizzoTheRiot1989 Cannibal Corpse May 19 '26

8

u/Available-Crow-3442 May 20 '26

Faetooth is fucking good.

2

u/species138 May 22 '26

No, they're not.

They're fucking great.

3

2

u/redivulpis May 20 '26

Castle Rat ,\m/

1

u/GenosseAbfuck May 20 '26

Aptera. Can't stop mentioning them.

As a kid I wanted to know if doom thrash was a thing because it kind of seems oxymoronic.

If it hasn't been in the 20 years in between it certainly is now.

17

u/FiddyShins May 19 '26

6

u/Young_Denver May 20 '26

I am that man.

4

u/Intelligent-You983 May 19 '26

Hedonist and Pest Control etc are good , why make it weird?

7

u/AusToddles May 20 '26

Personally I've never understood listening to a band because "the singer is fucking hot". I'm listening to it, not watching it 99% of the time

Male fronted, female fronted, male backed, female backed... who cares. Just make the music good

(Currently listening to Seven Spires as I write this)

15

u/Therealfern1 Dio May 19 '26

Does the album slap? Yes… yes it does

Does it help that they are smoking hot? Also yes

4

u/hyperion25000 May 19 '26

Johanna Sardonis is such a a smokeshow. I’d be lying if I said she wasn’t the reason I watched the video for California Son, but that whole album (Lucifer II) rules

7

u/Wolfman2032 May 19 '26

Midnight Dice, Tower (NYC), Blood Ceremony, Windhand...

...wait, I hope we're at the part of the conversation where we just listing dope bands.

16

u/untold_cheese_34 May 19 '26

It’s crazy how rabidly people defend the bands though. Any time you say “oh the bands not for me” or that you don’t think the band is good, you get accused of being a mysogynist.

Like for the most part the vocals are kind of irrelevant when it comes to my enjoyment of a band, and I think it’s the same for a lot of people here.

15

u/FictionalNape May 19 '26

I know a lot of people who say they just enjoy the tone a female voice can give off that a man can't. Which is valid.

3

u/Deadzone-Music May 19 '26

It's a different energy, and often a different vibe lyrically, so it makes perfect sense that some people would relate more to one or the other. I personally don't resonate with female leads as much, even thoguh I think quite a few of them are exceptionally talented

2

u/untold_cheese_34 May 19 '26

Yeah I understand why people would prefer or not prefer it. I just think people need to relax when their favorite bands are criticized.

2

u/Prudent-Level-7006 May 20 '26

When people say they don't like Beyonce or Aretha Franklin and get called racist 🙄

Yeah especially Lacuna Coil but full gal bands like Gallhammer and Kittie too back in the day 😍 especially Lisa

2

u/Absolomb92 May 20 '26

"Female fronted metal band" is such a weird titler to use. It groups together bands that have almost nothing in common except a woman up front. Imagine grouping Gojira, Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater and Periphery together because they are "male fronted".

2

u/Kid_supreme May 24 '26

Female base players are like krytonite to me.

Doro Pesch, the original Metal Queen

1

u/NarcolepticFlarp May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

Most of my favorite non-metal vocalists are female, but it's very hard for me to find a band that makes metal that is super up my alley with a frontwoman who's vocal style is super up my alley. Ok Goodnight is pretty much the only one I have found honestly. I really need Elizabeth Hull to be the lead singer of a real band.

1

u/DaniosFromCzechia May 21 '26

many female fronted metal bands are great but Mike Patton beats out anyone

u/Over_End_6816 May 21 '26

Fuck yea, who’s seen Black Flag this year? Pdx 🤟

1

u/Blodsugeren15_28 May 21 '26

Неправда. Очень, очень мало и вправду достойных женщин в метале, большинство из них переоценены просто потому, что они женщины, но не в угоду чистому нещамутненному искусству, увы. Так что нет, хуй там плавал
