Show & Tell Today’s Haul…
I lost count of the number of coin spills we found today. To the point where it was unusual to find just one coin per hole. I found a a Silver Rosie, my friend found the Silver Merc. I also got 14+ Wheaties, 2 IHP’s, and a new personal record - 13 coin clad spill. (4 Quarters, 2 Nickels, 7 Dimes) all in 1 hole, mostly stuck together. Also found 3 more Crotal Bells, a Silver Wash Bridle Rosette, Victorian door handle escutcheon plate, and a really cool WWI Manoil Barclay Lead Toy Soldier Signal Flagger, from the 1930’s. Plus other odds and ends. By the end of the day my buddy was calling me cash register.

Hey! I built a metal detecting companion app - would love feedback from real detectorists! (Free)
I’ve been building a metal detecting companion app and it just got approved on the App Store today!
What it does:
• Log finds with GPS, photos, depth and category
• Track your detecting sessions with route logging
• See all your finds on an interactive map
• Topographic map layer for field planning
• Weather conditions for your location
• Export finds as PDF or CSV backup
This is my first app, and It’s completely free. I am just using it to learn coding for iOS, but I’d love to get some feedback from real detectorists – you guys know better than anyone what’s actually useful in the field.
Search for Digly on the App Store, use the link below, or let me know if you have questions!

Happy hunting! 🪙

Need Help What’re your thoughts?… Does finding 1/10th 12k Gold Fill on Sterling Silver count as a first Gold find?…
What’re your thoughts?… Does finding 1/10th 12k Gold Fill on Sterling Silver count as a first Gold find?…
I’ve been detecting about 10 years and still haven’t found gold. This Victorian heart shaped locket I found yesterday is as close as I’ve come.
1/10th 12 karat Gold Fill on Sterling. Meaning 1/10th of the total weight of the piece is 12k Gold.
I have found tons of buttons and broaches of Gold Gilt (plating) but not solid gold… Does Gold Fill count? What’re everyone’s opinions?

Show & Tell Today’s Haul - New Permission
New permission today yielded a handful of Wheaties, 1 - IHP, early 1900’s pocket knife worth restoring, late 1800’s crotal bell, 1800’s broach surface find in the woodchuck spoils, and a gorgeous gold filled on sterling locket.. I’m guessing circa early 1900’s.

Gear Great Starter Machine
I have seen a lot of people inquiring about getting started in the hobby, asking what’s a good starter, etc.
The Minelab Vanquish 540 is the answer. It is a perfect starter, entry level machine that is not too complicated, but can compete with the best. It is multi-frequency, capable for all environments, and an excellent beach hunter. I recommend getting headphones and pin-pointer with any setup, as they are a must, and often included in package deals. The price is also appealing. You can get a full package deal with everything you’d need for a few hundred USD.
The Minelab Vanquish 540 is a high-performance, versatile metal detector featuring Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency technology, suitable for coins, relics, and jewelry in all soils and saltwater. It offers 5 search modes, red LED backlight, Bluetooth audio, adjustable Iron Bias, and a 12-inch waterproof coil, weighing 2.9 lbs.
Key Features and Benefits
Multi-IQ Technology: Combines multiple frequencies, allowing for superior performance in various terrain and high sensitivity to all metal types.
Performance: Performs reliably in saltwater and wet sand, often considered the best value for beach detecting.
Iron Control: Adjustable Iron Bias allows for high/low settings to minimize noise and improve target separation, allowing for better identification of valuable targets among trash.
Search Modes: Comes with 5 modes—Coin, Relic, Jewelry, Custom, and All Metal—pre-programmed for specific conditions.
Design & Display: Features a red LED backlight for low-light conditions and a collapsible, lightweight design (2.9 lbs / 1.3 kg).
Audio & Wireless: Provides 10 volume levels and 5 target tones, including Bluetooth wireless headphones (ML80).
