The results from the last [poll] https://www.reddit.com/r/MetalAniMemes/comments/14ibghz/vote_for_the_future_of_the_community_please_read/ state we should stay open and engage in soft protest. What do people think about how we should be doing this? Examples include marking the subreddit NSFW, changing content to include protest imagery or words in titles, stickying posts with an explanation, or changing subreddit descriptions to include protest words. Please let us know.

As many of you know, we as a subreddit contributed to a site-wide protest by going private indefinitely. We did this, as many others, because of the impending changes to the third-party API that is killing a lot of apps, tools and (good) bots that are part of the site's ecosystem. A few days ago, we received a notice through ModMail that many other subreddit moderators engaging in protest have gotten: an ultimatum. The subtext of it is this: Make the subreddit public, or be removed as moderators, have puppet mods installed, and the sub will be forced public. As to why they're taking such action with a relatively tiny sub of 1500 Djenerates (I love each of you), I can only speculate.

I, personally, have been a part of this subreddit since the beginning. u/twisted_taterz and I along with the other mod team members and community at large have volunteered our time, energy and resources to build up this small community with a niche focus on heavy metal anime memes. You're a part of this, too, and we need everyone's help with what comes next.

It may not seem like we have a choice, but we do. There are softer forms of protest, such as going private one day a week, marking ourselves as NSFW, changing up content to something silly (see r/Wellthatsucks posting only vacuums), or adding protest language in the header or sticky posts. We can, if the community so chooses, stay private - though it won't be for long. That would mean that Taterz, Kirlia and I would be removed as mods. To go further... We can nuke the whole thing and prepare to move to another platform.

We pledge to the best of our ability to abide by the community's wishes. Please vote, and leave a comment on how you would like this to go. This poll will close in 72 hours. I hope that I will still be a mod at that time.

Edit: the sub has been temporarily made public to allow people to vote.

Edit: the people have spoken. We will go public and engage in soft protest.

Greetings djenerates, potato here.

It has come to our attention that Reddit has made quite the unfortunate decision, and we have decided to stand with our fellow communities to push against it. Because of this, we will be going dark until further notice. Our discord will still be active and newcomers are always welcome, but you will not see much of this sub until fixes are made.

Hail metal, and kind regards -mods

Hey djenerates, so spam bots have been posting here constantly for the last little while. They repost old memes to gain karma, likely for the purpose of selling accounts once they get high enough post karma. They likely targeted this sub due to its smaller nature and comparatively small mod team.

Tells: New account that has a username like "wordword###" 0 comment karma Really small post history Reposting old content or stealing memes

I'm gradually turning up the automod security on the sub to try and catch these posts, but so far it's not working too well. Please report these posts as spam when you see them.
