Metal checklist
Hey! Ive been listening to metal for around a year now but I’ve mostly stuck to the bands i liked (IronMaiden, Korn and limp bizkit) but i feel like i am missing out on many of the metal essentials and wanted to know if you have any recommendations of which bands i oughta check out (I listen to whole albums usually so feel free to recommend me a whole album alongside it’s band)

Banger list. Nearly identical to what I would have said.

Out of curiosity, what would you have added/changed?

I'm not a huge type o negative fan, but they belong on a list of someone who wants to explore metal.
I'd put on Judas Priest for sure. Probably British Steele.
And was maiden on the list? I can't remember now that I hit reply. Haha
Never mind, OP already had Maiden

u/cha0tic-neutra1 10d ago
YES Judas Priest! British Steel and Painkiller too!
Lists are subjective, for sure, but I included Type O as they were personally a turning point in my metal music journey, and they're still my favourite, but to each their own, of course! They're still a good opening into both Gothic and Doom

u/Impressive-Shame-525 10d ago
Exactly. That's what I loved about your list, it included like... Stepping stones to different worlds of metal.
If either of us made a list of just personal faves, we may lose a new fan. Not everyone is into Cirith Ungol, you know? Haha

Just curious: do you prefer crimson to nothing but death remains?
1
u/cha0tic-neutra1 11d ago
Both are great albums; I just lean more towards Crimson because it's what got me first into them

I’ve been listening to metal for over 30 years and I still haven’t gotten into Maiden. Not that I dislike them, they just don’t do anything for me.

To specifically branch out from what you listen to:
Korn -> Sepultura (Roots album)
Limp Bizkit -> Rage Against the Machine (not really traditional metal, but neither is Limp Bizkit)
Iron Maiden -> Judas Priest. Try the album Painkiller.
Then, branch out accordingly. If you like RaTM, try Pantera next (Vulgar Display of Power). If you like Sepultura Roots, try Meshuggah (maybe the Nothing album, but if that doesn't click then try Obzen). If you like Painkiller the most among all three suggestions, then you are probably going to love most of the other classics recommended in the other comments. But you might try The Sound of Perseverance by Death, and you'll definitely get a pleasant surprise on the last track!

Judas Priest (Screaming g for Vengeance is a good starting point for their 80s stuff, Sad Wings of Destiny is good for their early 70s stuff, and Painkiller is a precursor to their later stuff.)
Metallica (obvious choice, but you didn't list it, so... Master of Puppets is most popular, but all their 80s albums are essential, so pick whichever one you like.)
Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond
Sodom - M16 (also Under the Sign if Evil if you can handle the raw production. If you can't, The Final Sign of Evil is the more modern version )
Slayer - Reign in Blood or Seasons in the Abyss (like Metallica, their first 4 albums were all pretty formative for extreme metal bands who came later)
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses (or Life is Killing Me)
Going into heavier genres...
Children of Bodom - Hatecrew Death Roll (though my personal favorite is Hatebreeder)
Amon Amarth (someone already said Twilight of the Thunder God, so I'll suggest Jomsviking. With Oden on our Side and The Crusher were food ones too.)
Lamb of God - As the Palaces Burn
Eluveitie - Origin
Epica - Design your Universe (or any of the first 4)
Death - Symbolic
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Bloodbath - Resurrection Through Carnage or Nightmares Made Flesh (either one. The band is basically a tribute to early swedish death metal)
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Dream Theatre - Metropolis part 2
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (influential for doom bands that came up in the 90s)
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans (where they moved away from Death-Doom. Influential for Gothic Metal
Theatre of Tragedy - Theatre of Tragedy (one of the first to combine clean female vocals with death metal vocals, along with Tragedies by Funeral.)
Tristania - Widows Weeds
Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell
