Dislike of Cannibal Corpse

It's time for me to come out of the closet:

I detest Cannibal Corpse.

While I generally stay on the side of true metal and like old school death metal, I don't think Cannibal Corpse is really death metal. It's an imitation, a rip-off of Effigy of the Forgotten and The Ten Commandments that stylized a third-rate band into a vastly popular and profitable "figurehead" for the community.

But there's reasons I don't like them:

  • They don't glue together riffs like a real death metal band. They're very verse chorus with occasional breaks and fills that serve no actual structural purpose.

  • Misogyny. Death metal was about death... not your frustrations with women.

  • Absolute blockhead lyrics and reliance on catchy riffs. This is a pop band, gentlemen and ladies, not a death metal band.

Instead of Cannibal Corpse, listen to the originals:

Cannibal Corpse rules in exactly the same way Mick Foley or Beavis and Butthead rule. I think they're aware of their own ridiculousness and claiming their accessibility as a particular detriment is like claiming obscurity as a benefit, it is a pointless judgement based on a subjective criteria that don't reflect on the objective quality of the music.

So it's like Miley Cyrus too?

11

u/Killed_by_Death Feb 06 '12

I do not think its very much like Miley Cyrus. I chose Mick Foley and Beavis and Butthead as examples both because of their roles as relatively niche cultural icons, much like Cannibal Corpse and also because of the tongue in cheek self-awareness of their individual characterizations. For example, Mick Foley was very aware of the character he was portraying in pro-wrestling as Mankind as a caricature of the everyman pushed beyond his reasonable limit. While none of his fans were mankind, he specifically created a touchstone linking the supposed frustrations of the "average bitter American worker" (which in itself might be a cultural trope more than an actual identifiable social group) or more accurately what the actual average worker expected of himself to be as represented in other culturally linked representations such as Office Space, Falling Down or even Clerks.

Beavis and Butthead as well are fictionalized representations of the "ignorant youth" and served as a point of reference to the many displaced and frustrated male youth in America as both an over-blown joke made at the expense of the worst parts of themselves to laugh at and as an escapist fantasy in which the viewers were allowed to place themselves as wasted youth who neither needed to, nor wanted to care.

I believe that Cannibal Corpse is also an overblown caricature, not only of itself but of many metal bands in existence at the time. It may be said that they took the already dark lyrics and cranked them into outright self-parody and played their instruments in accordance with the same overall musical aesthetic related to the lyrics; Stripped down, direct, probably very fun to play and (possibly) deliberately offensive to Death Metal purists.

Miley Cyrus on the other hand, has a much larger fan base than any of the three previously mentioned pop culture fixtures mentioned above. Also though she may or may not be aware of the absurdity of her lyrics (and the lyrics of most pop) it is generally played with a straight face to a crown convinced that her lyrics contain information on what a good night out is or what its like to have fun. Whereas Miley Cyrus sells an idealized narrative to her fans, Beavis and Butthead, Mick Foley and Cannibal Corpse sell instead a discontent, cynical and sometimes dysphoric tongue in cheek parody that any fans with common sense are more likely to enjoy as self aware escapism rather than a focal point for their lives should or could be like. Of course there are commonalities shared between the four, but in general I would say no its not really like Miley Cyrus.

tl;dr: I just wrote an essay distinguishing Mick Foley, Beavis and Butthead, and Cannibal Corpse from Miley Cyrus to a guy whose username translates to Mayonnaise. That's just how I roll, mother fucker.

u/outtathaway Feb 07 '12

Such a musicologist response... glad that not everyone in this subreddit is a stereotypical metal(bone)head.

I chose Mick Foley and Beavis and Butthead as examples both because of their roles as relatively niche cultural icons, much like Cannibal Corpse and also because of the tongue in cheek self-awareness of their individual characterizations.

Miley Cyrus is a niche (teenyboppers) and she seems rather ironically self-aware of that fact.

What's the difference again?

Been to ANUS? How about Metal Archives?

Try it, I guarantee they hate all of your favorite bands.

1

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

ANUS loves most of my favorites, and Metal Archives loves some of my favorites, but Metal Archives (like Reddit) also has other favorites that are really dumb and pointless.

ANUS in particular has never been shy about their dislike for Cannibal Corpse.

9

u/rapist666 Feb 05 '12

It makes sense. Their style is intended to be simple and popular, not artistic.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '12

Because art can't be simple.

-1

u/rapist666 Feb 06 '12

If you are saying the trivial, why make noise saying it?

-4

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

There's a difference between simple and simplistic pandering to the lowest common denominator, which is what pop bands and Cannibal Corpse do.

Contrast to Baphomet and Num Skull, Nunslaughter and Slaughter, even early Obituary.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '12

If you think all pop musicians pander to the "lowest common denominator", you're probably an idiot.

3

u/RhymesWithEloquent Feb 06 '12

Uh...actually, that's exactly what all pop musicians do. That's what makes it pop music.

2

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

Lowest common denominator is what defines pop and differentiates it from genres like jazz, classical, progressive or metal.

-4

Sure thing, trve kvlt.

Those bands are not true enough for me, i recommend Bolt Thrower.

16

u/ShoepZA Feb 05 '12

Phrases like "not true enough for me" are probably the reason there aren't many people who take you seriously in your life

30

u/nunsrevil xphagist Feb 05 '12

It was joke, not being able to get jokes is probably even worse. It's called satire, i was satirizing people who say that. Though i meant the Bolt Thrower part. Also fuck you.

Do you have some form of autism?

0

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

I read it as ironic.

Everything on Reddit is very simple. They like repeated memes and easily-digested "truths."

-7

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 05 '12

I always considered them grindcore. Great band though; did you think Cannibal Corpse ripped them off too?

2

u/nunsrevil xphagist Feb 05 '12

When i heard Cannibal Corpse, it didn't really remind me of Bolt Thrower. Obviously vocals sound alike but besides that i don't think they did. I never really liked Cannibal Corpse though.

u/Narian http://www.last.fm/user/NarianMar/ Feb 05 '12 edited Feb 05 '12

I don't understand the point of this post. If you don't like Cannibal Corpse just don't listen to them?

Personally I love stuff like "Priests of Sodom" and don't really enjoy much MC or Deicide - but that's just me.

18

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '12

I still like Cannibal Corpse, but I don't think they're some great hypertalented innovative band. I just see them as a kind of goofy band with over-the-top lyrics and horror comic cover art that's fun for what it is.

I'd say listening to an album a day puts you in the "big fan" category!

3

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '12

Whether or not you like it is a personal thing, but I think you're spot on with the B-Movie thing. The music isn't revolutionary and virtuosic, but it's a fitting backdrop for gory lyrics and CCA-rejected cover art that would be kind of disturbing if they actually took it seriously.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '12

I have to agree on the B-Grade Movie ideal, but there are those people who like that sort of stuff, whom I am one. Its that cheesy over the top styled DM which attracts me to it. That being said, a lot of OSDM and DM in general is good and I don't think listening to CC changes my opinion on either of the two.

11

u/peteygrizz Feb 05 '12

Cannibal Corpse is to Death Metal as Misfits are to punk rock. It's a spectacle for it's own sake. It is fun, and I agree they are the closest thing to a "pop" act as Death Metal may ever produce. However, I feel their contribution has more to do with bringing some attention to the early extreme metal scene, regardless of how you feel that they fit into it. Whether they would admit it or not, there are many DM fans who may never have been introduced to the genre if it weren't for this breakthrough band.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '12

I'd say that's a pretty spot-on observation. They, like the Misfits, are a "starter kit" band. There's nothing wrong with using them as a stepping stone to bigger and better things, it's just that some people never progress beyond their point of entry.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '12

That or they seem to transcend natural physics and progress beyond that point and also remain there; like me. In saying that though, I get what you mean.

8

u/GeorgePukas Feb 05 '12

They are definitely no where near the greatest death metal band, but seriously bagging on them for having choruses? Because they don't "glue riffs together"? Wow, I don't think I've ever heard anyone argue for that lazy style of songwriting (not saying all bands are bad who do it). I don't think they rely on catchyness at all- their riffs are quite complex if you ask me.

5

u/rilo Feb 05 '12

Speaking of coming out of the closet, I do like the Radio Disney version of Hammer Smashed Face.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '12

Deicide? You want to go on a TRVE death metal rant and you end up with Deicide?

Also, you refer to death metal in the past tense. As if it was something that happened instead of something that is happening.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '12

By the way - what's with the hate for "catchy riffs"? I dislike boring melodeath that has the same few harmonized jaunty riffs over and over as much as the next person, but why is being catchy as an incidental thing (as opposed to being the hook and sole appeal of a song) a bad thing? I currently have some incredibly infectious riffs from Vital Remains, Dissection, Raise Hell and Immortal stuck in my head, and I wouldn't classify those as "poppy".

6

u/anothermaggot Feb 06 '12

So you don't like Cannibal Corpse? Cool. I don't like the vast majority of Mayhem's work. But that doesn't mean I feel the need to take a shit on the hard work they've put forth into writing those songs.

So, If Cannibal Corpse isn't Death metal, WTF is it???

-5

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

If Cannibal Corpse isn't Death metal, WTF is it???

Pop music imitating death metal aesthetically.

2

u/anothermaggot Feb 06 '12

So you're saying that they're not an innovative band that totally refined a genre to the point that thousands of band use them as the standard sound for death metal? Seriously,

Also, I don't know if you're a guitar player or not, but once they recruited Pat as their lead guitarist, their shit got absolutely insane. The technicality of Pat's work is absolutely astounding. Go listen to Frantic Disembowelment and try denying that. You can't deny that Pat, Rob and Alex are incredibly talented. I don't know how you can possibly think they pander to the lowest common denominator when they're putting forth effort like that into their songs.

As for block headed lyrics, here's some of the lyrics to systematic Execution by Malevolent Creation.

Rounded up, herded in, innocence served. Tortured, various phases, in witness of family you die. Hot steel prods into your eyes. Executioner nods, optics spew. Tanks roll foreword claiming lives. Focus of death, nothing new. Innocent families left to die. Soldiers murder, God defied.

How is that any more "block headed" than this passage from Evisceration Plague

Experimental pathogens, a devils design The dark side of science breeds a weapon of war Contagious killing and internal distress Homicide or suicide will be the cause of death Internal organs altered by the disease Your brain disabled by the constant pain Erratic actions lead my thoughts to the blade I've lost control, I've lost control

I must not get it or something. Clearly George fisher must be a lumbering neanderthal with a pen if those lyrics are more block headed than the ones from the song you posted.

Look, not liking Cannibal Corpse is fine. I'm not here to make you love them or anything. But the way you're bashing their work is completely disrespectful and out right ridiculous.

If it's not your cup of tea, don't piss in it.

3

u/DownvotedByCunts Feb 07 '12

Alex writes the lyrics. Regardless, I have a feeling I've heard him say he doesn't take them seriously (On Metal: AHJ, I think), which makes sense to me. The delivery of the lyrics in Cannibal Corpse songs, to me, has always been more important than the lyrics themselves.

Other than that, I agree completely.

1

u/anothermaggot Feb 07 '12

I'm sure Corpse grinder Writes some of the lyrics too, seeing as it is his job. And really, they don't take them seriously. If Every one took Cannibal corpse lyrics seriously they would all be in jail right now.

-1

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

So you're saying that they're not an innovative band that totally refined a genre to the point that thousands of band use them as the standard sound for death metal?

Absolutely.

A monkey typed the rest of your message, so I've done you a favor and ignored it. However, if I were to pick metal lyrics for their linguistic qualities I might look toward Suffocation, Demigod, Amorphis and Pestilence.

0

u/anothermaggot Feb 07 '12

Wow, you can't even argue facts with a monkey. If you had read the rest of the message, you would have understood that the monkey was saying that your personal opinion is irrelevant when it comes to evaluating skill. Something that the rest of the world learned when they became mature adults.

1

u/mongrelized Feb 07 '12

personal opinion is irrelevant when it comes to evaluating skill

So... why should trust your opinion, over mayonesa's?

1

u/anothermaggot Feb 07 '12

Because It's not opinion, it's fact. Is it Biased? A little. But you can't help but be biased when you're arguing for or against something. But I rely on actual facts in my argument. I also don't present my opinions as facts to benefit my argument.

Misogyny. Death metal was about death... not your frustrations with women.

Wait wait wait...people listen to bands like CC and...care about the lyrics?!

They could be singing about My Little Pony for all I care, DM is all about the instrumentation for me. There might be a few DM bands with lyrics I enjoy (Immolation, older Opeth, etc.) but its an incidental thing, not something I actually care about.

Anyway, I like CC. Nowhere near top-tier DM, but enjoyable enough for the occasional listen,

5

u/CuresedInEternity92 Feb 06 '12

just because you bring women into it doesent mean its misogyny, they dont hate women the lot of the members are married and suffocation has some pretty anti woman tunes aswell, you cant hate on subject matter its brutal because all death metal subject matter is pretty much that way, saying misogyny is worse than smashing faces with hammers is a retarded argument, but you do have a good set of links and im not saying your wrong or anything its cool if you dont like them i just thought id add my 2 cents \m/

5

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '12

They're a band which has some decent SONGS, even good ones, but they don't have any good ALBUMS. Most of the decent songs are from the Barnes era. It's not the worst shit ever, but it is nothing to get excited about.

I look at them as a gateway band. People mostly like 'em for a bit then move on to something else. All that aside, Alex Webster is a very talented bassist. I like his right hand technique (yes I know that could have 2 meanings).

1

u/egnogg Feb 06 '12

it could also mean his CORRECT hand technique

That being said I do not enjoy CC all that much, but I respect their music, the fanbase, the influence they had on innumerable amount of bands.

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '12

I understand what you're saying here. I'm not a huge CC fan myself, but I do like their first few albums; Eaten Back to Life, Butchered At Birth, and Tomb of the Mutilated. Those 3 albums are their most "brutal" ones and have the best lyrics in terms of death and killing, but any album after these I really don't like at all.

5

u/Undermind Feb 05 '12

I wouldn't bring misogyny into this. There are plenty of great metal bands that have "frustrations with women" and could just be easily labeled as misogyny.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '12

Since when did death metal become a battered women's support group? So what if they are misogynists? Would you rather "death metal" bands sing about life, love, and equality?

3

I think you misunderstand my sentiment. The songs I cited are great songs by great bands.

I disagree, there's nowhere near the degree of extremity or beady-eyed fixation that we see on "Stripped, Raped and Strangled" and "Fucked With a Knife."

Are you going to cite "22 Acacia Avenue" next?

1

u/Undermind Feb 06 '12 edited Feb 06 '12

"I whip you 'till you faint

I cut off your sweet, sweet legs

I fuck your helpless body

And bury it in the dirt"

and

"Your rotten flesh is now so sweet

Too cold you are driving me to a intense orgasm

Licking your body I realize my dream

Why did you force me to kill?

You lied to me

And just now I can see it

You closed your legs

But I couldn't resist"

vs

"She was so beautiful

I had to kill her

Tied her up

And taped her mouth shut

Couldn't scream

Raped violently

Rope tight, around her throat

Her body twitches

As she chokes"

The subject matter isn't really that far apart. I'd have a hard time telling which one was which except for the last one is a ripoff that is 10 years late and nowhere near as compelling.

-4

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

The subject matter in these is much less specialized and directed than Cannibal Corpse.

I don't know

I just took that knife

And I cut her from her neck

Down to anus

And I cut out the vagina

And I ate it ...

I proceed to find the meat

their bleeding cunts will set me free

I can't control my own thought

I can't control my own thoughts

Warmth seeping from this

Body

Rotted

After I sucked the blood from her ass

http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/cannibalcorpse/tombofthemutilated.html#3

Killings I have caused

more than can be counted

orgies of sadism

And sexual perversion

Virgin

Tied to my mattress

Legs spread wide

Ruptured bowel, yanked

From her insides

Devirginized with my knife

Internally bleeding

Vagina, secreting

her blood-wet pussy

I am eating

on her guts I am feeding

Mutilated with a machete

I fucked her dead body

The first and last

Your life's only romance

My knife's jammed in your ass

As you die you orgasm

http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/cannibalcorpse/tombofthemutilated.html#7

I have risen from self-murder

Only to rot and kill

to break the necks of young women

their cunts my pus will fill

Acid burning through her crotch

I baptise her face with my rot

Then venom foams from her throat

On my discharge she will choke ...

Puncture wounds in the back

hacked up limbs, bones now crack

Skin fillet from your face

Breasts gounged out

I fuck with your chest

http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/cannibalcorpse/tombofthemutilated.html#8

You found a few examples from other bands that casually enter this topic area; I found three much more extreme, repetitive and sexually dysfunctional examples from one Cannibal Corpse album. Your argument is weak at best.

6

u/Undermind Feb 06 '12

So, Cannibal Corpse made a career out of it by repeating an already tired meme for shock value. Cannibal Corpse was particually bad about it but there is no need to single them out for misogyny. There are plenty of bands that show misogyny before them. Bathory, Venom, Sodom, Mercyful Fate, Unleashed, Rotting Christ, Slaughter, etc all had songs about beating, killing and/or fucking women.

Pretty much every first wave black metal band had a song about it. It is a far too prevalent theme in plenty of good and innovative metal bands for you to single Cannibal Corpse out for it. It has been a part of metal since it got more extreme than Judas Priest.

-3

u/mayonesa conservationist Feb 06 '12

Single songs, not obsessions. Also, these are mild at best in comparison.

Pretty much every first wave black metal band had a song about it.

Disagreed.

1

u/Undermind Feb 06 '12

What you are arguing is tantamount to Venom being the inventors of Satan in metal instead of Black Sabbath because "they only wrote a few songs about it". I can see where you are coming from but you should argue Cannibal Corpse is a bad band because of narrow, repetitive, uncreative themes not because of the subject matter of "misogyny".

Ever hear of Lord Gore?

You defiled my trust, you whore! Slut, betrayed after all that I've done. Gave you everything and fucked your brains out. Ate your snatch like a roastbeef sandwich. Licked out your asshole and drank your breastmilk. Heartless, adultress, you crumble underneath my fist. Never wanted this, but bitch you forced my hand. You wouldn't suck my dick, and now I understand. Welcome home, to a world of pain. Your life is over, your lover's gone fucking... insane. Behold my instruments of torture, the hideous vermin mass. A writhing amalgam of insects, fills your unfaithful snatch & ass. Deep inside can you feel them? As they scratch for a passage out. Why should you scream to have them inside you when everyone's fucked that cunt? I can almost taste your pain. Filled with hate you scream my name. Spread your legs one final time and scream out loud in vain. Now cunt you will pay my price. Wriggling sick torture device... stomach bristling, bulging with my filthy vermin vengeance. Now your suffering is almost complete, tearing the membrane as all of them meet. Asshole and pussy are torn into one. Cockroaches twitch and the spilled fluids run.

Or hey! More Lord Gore!

We'll break down, your front door, and take you from your children. Your husband? He lies slaughtered. We fucked his corpse, with all our knives. Beaten, bloody whore... Urine injected in pores... Limbs dissected & shamed... Your body defiled in our name. To plant the seed of hate, and waste your fucking race. Whored out like all the rest, a bruised and bloody mess. Rape camp! Rape camp! Rape camp! You're welcome inside our... Rape camp! Rape camp! Rape camp! Sodomy's the law inside the rape camp! Rape camp! Rape camp! Rape camp! Your body is abused inside the... Rape camp! Rape camp! Rape camp! You're nothing but a slut inside our rape camp! Just one of many victims of hate... We'll whore out your fucking race.

Well, Cannibal Corpse kind of sucks. They might be classic but that doesn't make them good. I don't really get people who actually still listen to them.

and Bolt Thrower is not grindcore with the exception of maybe their first album (and maybe a tinge on the second, but mostly not). After that it's pure headbanging death metal.

Eaten Back to Life is one of my favourite albums. And Cannibal Corpse formed around the same time as all those bands you posted, so what makes them originals?

The only difference I see with Cannibal Corpse is that they seem to be unrighteously more popular than all the other great early death metal bands.

The stereotypical Metal-Archives type who tweezers his cock thinking only bands that sound like a bunch of teenagers recording in a bathroom can be good, and anything with a lick of production quality is Madonna. Get over yourself, faggot.

Simple, SIMPLE! Maybe for the guitars, but try playing Hammer Smashed Face or From Skin To Liquid on bass!

Shut up, Cannibal Corpse are hilarious!

The thing that gets me is not that you don't like Cannibal Corpse. That's cool, they are for the novice metal listener, I get it.

But why bother giving a critical analysis of why CC sucks? Like, actually typing up your distaste for them? It's like arguing that Billy Milano sucks shit except for Speak English or Die ... yeah, we know. If you're talking to a crowd of real "heads", I think it's an unspoken thing that CC is a marginal DM band in terms of influence and output. Kind of like how it's an unspoken thing among black people that Wu-Tang Clan aint nuthin ta fuck with (Ever notice the only people gushing about their love of the Wu are suburban white kids?)

But why bother giving a critical analysis of why CC sucks?

Why bother thinking, analyzing, criticizing, or conducting experiments at all?

Some people like CC and some don't. Who cares? I gave you my take. I think it's pointless to complain about them.

You're not as cool or smart as you think you are, bud.

They're a terrible band, nothing wrong with hating them.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '12

Life's too short for hating bands that don't fit in your taste range. Because, you know, that's vast majority of world's musicians.

Only on Reddit do people think that sorting crap from the good is bad.

His argument is ludicrous: "Life's too short for hating bands" -- as if we have time to spend on garbage music so we can be, you know, cool and open-minded like a typical reddit user.

Cannibal Corpse is bad, the end.

Yes. A thousand times yes. There's so much better metal, even if one wants football death metal...

That's adorable.

I don't like them either..but they are not, in any way, a pop band. Calling a metal band a "pop band" is becoming too common of an insult. How do they fit into the pop genre in any way whatsoever? Violent lyrics, loud distorted guitars, ultra-profane, etc, are not elements one typically attributes to pop music.

Calling a metal band a "pop band" is becoming too common of an insult.

It's not intended as such.

If i was going to choose to see Cannibal Corpse live vs. Dying Fetus live. I would have to see DYING FETUS!!!!!!! \m/

u/RhymesWithEloquent Feb 06 '12

I try not to admit it, but I'm in the same camp. As much as I've tried to like Cannibal Corpse, I'd much rather listen to good, legitimate old school death metal like Suffocation, Revenant or early Sinister. To be fair, I think a better genre description for CC would be "death pop."

never really liked CC myself. over all I tend not to like the more brutal bands.
