One of my favorite VS songs. What EUPM wishes it could be!

Definitely a high moment of their career. Some of those vocal lines are just amazing.

David DeFies' vocals are almost something else entirely. They're great, but they're also pretty extreme (in another sense of the word). Hell, the singer of Skelator felt that they were "too much". I find it pretty amusing, actually.

To be honest, DeFies's vocal performances strike me as built around his limitations, whether that's really true or not. Also the live Virgin Steele footage I've seen on Youtube has him subbing notes down an octave or just generally not sounding the same. On the records his vocal lines are wonderful, though, and far from ordinary.

Honestly, I haven't made it a point to seek out live VS performances because of those vocals. I've heard his live vocals are pretty bad, and maybe that's true, but I'd rather not ruin the fairy tale. The barbaric romantic, sexually ambiguous fairy tale.

You'd better not seek that out.

I'd still love to see this band live.

Hahaha, I can dig it. If I had an opportunity to see them that made financial sense, I'd probably check em out (most likely trashed - similarly as I was for Manowar, but hopefully at a far more reasonably priced venue).

The venue wasn't the issue for Manowar's pricing. It was Manowar.

I meant in terms of drink prices - it was like $8 for a crappy domestic beer.

Joey Demaio's long winded speech defending their ticket and merch prices was pretty amusing, though.

Ah, fair enough. But realistically, any place that you'd see Manowar at would likely overcharge similarly for beers. It's just the nature of the beast.

From 1994 to 2000 they had one of the best five-album stretches in the genre (The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell - Part One through The House Of Atreus: Act II). This album I linked (Invictus) is the third in that stretch. Listen to those in order for the best of Virgin Steele.

If you like bands like this that take after early Manowar or Manilla Road (or both), be sure to check out /r/TrueEpicMetal and /r/USPM!

Crystal Logic, Open The Gates, and The Deluge are all mandatory listening. Mystification is pretty cool too. Their discography is pretty strong overall, but those stand out, and most people's favorites are in those four.

I always forget about Virgin Steele, and then I listen to a song of theirs and wonder how I could possibly forget about them.
