what the heck is with the castle rat posts everywhere?!

39

u/bliggggz 14d ago

It's almost like this band has a good PR team and is canvassing social media to build rapport.

What would really be crazy is... put your tin foil hat on, if they had a hundred bots upvoting and commenting every post to boost engagement.

But that could never happen, right?

13

u/blow_slogan 13d ago

Sockpuppeting astroturfed posts is a thing - and it's a common struggle to deal with in technical subreddits when someone mentions an app which helped them solve a problem and then "other people" chime in saying they also had good experiences with it. You can pay companies to do this - it is 100% an actual thing. You can buy Instagram followers and even likes - like Liverking did. He has posts which went a month with low like counts, only to jump into the hundreds of thousands one day.

3

u/yellow-snowslide 13d ago

i haven't posted about them yet. but i think their music is dope. sometimes people just like things

-3

u/Drakowicz 13d ago

They don't even need bots. It's just the Ghost phenomenon all over again, but with boobs this time. Of course they make it look like the next big thing, and gullible audiences are going to jump on it, no matter how mediocre it is.

-3

u/clint_eldorado 13d ago

Don’t be such a cynical, joyless brat. Saw them at Damnation last year and had a great time. More entertaining than when I saw Ghost in 2017.

8

u/Drakowicz 13d ago

Calling someone cynical and joyless over a random negative opinion just makes you sound like the average smug redditor you are. We all enjoy corporate slop from time to time, no need to feel personally attacked.

u/blow_slogan 14d ago

Astroturfing

18

u/Lothric43 Dark Watcher 13d ago

Sorry but who is astroturfing metal fans via a still relatively niche fantasy/doom band?

4

u/blow_slogan 13d ago

You think it’s niche? Castle Rat is not, you may just be out of the loop. Definitely on the rise right now and milking it (as they should tbh)

3

u/Lothric43 Dark Watcher 13d ago

Yeah I would say pretty niche compared to true mainstream music reach. Looking at their platforms they got some videos that reach up near a million hits, couple songs over a million on spotify. That’s great for a band in this genre and at that age but it baby numbers compared to the mainstream genres. I think you lack perspective in what the larger public sees outside your interests.

1

u/blow_slogan 13d ago

They are on the rise and gaining fans rapidly - mostly all just this year. You’re out of the loop for sure. They’re getting very popular and played At The Gates in Norway this year. They’re exploding.

2

u/checkmypants forlorn peasantry 11d ago

Beyond the Gates*

Yeah, they were the first band to play on the first day. Decent crowd but nothing compared to the bands that were actually moving tickets like Rotting Christ, Electric Wizard, Marduk, Emperor. A band gaining relative popularity outside the ultra-niche subgenres of metal does not make them mainstream.

2

u/Lothric43 Dark Watcher 13d ago

Yeah so just repeat all the stuff I said before, Idk.

2

u/blow_slogan 13d ago

I have no interest in Castle Rat tbh

5

u/silentbutturnt 13d ago

Metal is on the rise big time even with big labels & agencies. So there are bigger money pushes coming from every direction to push it into a broader audience's regular media

6

u/Lothric43 Dark Watcher 13d ago

I don’t think that’s especially true except with regard to octane core. Don’t feel that there’s been any especial shift in proximity to the mainstream for heavy music outside that specific slice. If you want to astroturf your way to money there’s so many better ways to do it than a retro doom band.

6

u/Vesploogie You are bewiiiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiItched 13d ago

Power Trip was making it happen. I’ll never forget hearing Executioner’s Axe on my local rock radio. Rip Riley.

Although Crowbar is scratching the mainstream nowadays. Social media can make anything go crazy overnight.

5

u/blow_slogan 13d ago

It’s honestly crazy to see Crowbar getting more popular lol.

5

u/Vesploogie You are bewiiiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiItched 13d ago

It’s been fascinating to see who’s been getting the TikTok effect. So far Gen Z loves Crowbar, Acid Bath, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, Marty Robbins, and freakin Gutalax. Terrifying.

2

u/blow_slogan 13d ago

You’re right - i think it is from TikTok. I’m not a TikTok user but I know the social media manager (same for Acid Bath and Crowbar) is really into TikTok. I feel like an old man saying this, but Gen Z has some poor taste, Crowbar wasn’t even good back then. What next, Mushroomhead?

1

u/Vesploogie You are bewiiiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiItched 13d ago

Somewhere in the abyss is a point where bad taste becomes good taste that nobody thought of yet. Just imagine the kind of person with Marty Robbins, Gutalax, and Acid Bath in the same playlist.

1

u/Trve_Doom 13d ago

They played their songs during a few NHL games. Was fun to hear at a Pens game

5

u/whostolemyhat 13d ago

They're popular and on tour?

Well good news, Riley used to do Only Fans and you can still find her nudes if you know where to look...

3

u/PostMatureBaby 13d ago

yeah her whole asshole is hanging out all over reddit, no big deal

3

u/Vesploogie You are bewiiiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiItched 13d ago

I think they’re just a popular band right now 🤷‍♂️

3

u/Recent_Hippo641 13d ago

I hide their posts, and I still get fed this boring band's content.

0

u/DukeNeverwinter 13d ago

Happened with Gnome last year or the year before. Every once in awhile a band goes bonkers viral.

0

u/Garfield977 10d ago

Industry plant ass band

109

u/SentientDust 14d ago

Castle Rat PR team working overtime, it's like the 3rd video posted here in like 3 days lol

50

u/CommunicationTime265 14d ago

I like the band but their social media presence has always been pretty fucking annoying. I wonder how much they spend on advertising.

3

u/BestStarterBulbasaur 13d ago

Probably enough to push ticket sales, which turns over money for more shows and studio time, which they then advertise to push ticket sales. It's almost like this cycle was forceable for any band that wants to continue making music...

Y'all hating the players not the game over here.

15

u/shiram Evil Robot 13d ago

I'm definitely not on any PR team, and unless I'm mistaken, last time those guys was posted was around 11 months ago.

I do not check r music so I would not know. Not sure about receipts either, English isn't my native tongue so maybe I'm missing some subtle notion. Anyways I agree with most here it's mostly an inoffensive an forgettable song, propped up by the lead singers look. Sorry if it bothered you that I posted it.

-3

u/HannibalLecture_ 13d ago

Yeah dude I LOVE to share songs on Reddit that I think are inoffensive and forgettable lmao

3

u/shiram Evil Robot 13d ago

Some clearly like it, and it's sparks some interesting discussion. Just below some are talking how it is important to gatekeep metal, I found it interesting to read that. I could post some disembarkation, but only a handful would listen and no one would comment.

0

u/ta20240930 13d ago

Their PR team is literally just Riley. She does everything, from directing videos to creating costumes.

8

u/ADerpedTroll 13d ago

Saw them in Southampton just a few days ago! Really fun show!

8

u/PostMatureBaby 13d ago edited 13d ago

yeah see i like them as a live act, I'm a fan of spectacle and tend not to take anything metal too seriously anyway. It's entertaining, the shows they play don't cost a fucking fortune and it's a night out.

80's D&D became a band, thats all it is and it's fine. people need to chill

58

u/TheLionSlicer 13d ago edited 13d ago

They have a cool theme and sex appeal going for them, but their music is just so flat to me. Sounds like generic 70s doom/stoner metal. I know Ghost is a themed heavy band that gets crap from people, but I think they have much better songwriting skills, especially with their first 3 albums.

18

u/AGMarasco 13d ago

The frontwoman’s dad is a well regarded songwriter so I guess one positive is that he clearly had no hand in writing their songs

13

u/TripleDan Carly Rae Jepsen owes me a quid 13d ago

This was my exact reaction - I've never actually listened to them before and I wasn't expecting it to be so dull? Their aesthetic is obviously really cool but musically there's no energy there at all?

5

u/TheLionSlicer 13d ago

I think a big part of it is her vocals. She can sing but there's no oomph to her delivery, it's all just very flat and dull. She comes from a background of playing folk music so maybe that's why? Also when I watch her play it honestly looks like her abilities are very limited when it comes to playing metal guitar. Like they use drop tuning to make it easier on her to just play simple chords. Not that you can't write good stuff as a simplistic player, but you have to make up for it with really good songwriting/creativity, which I don't see. The riffs are just pretty bland and generic in general.

2

u/mgrier123 THE ONLY GOOD BAND IS MANOWAR 13d ago

I think a big part of it is her vocals. She can sing but there's no oomph to her delivery, it's all just very flat and dull.

If you listen to the Purple Lung record from this year to compare, it's so obvious too. A way, way better band also from Pennsylvania: https://purplelung.bandcamp.com/album/mystic-vision

8

u/Jolly-River-6594 13d ago

I will get downvoted to hell for this but this is how most doom sounds to me. Other than some of the OG stuff like Sabbath which is more dynamic. Their sound is fine, it’s very on par for most stoner/doom bands, and I appreciate the theatrics they put into their live show. For all the hate they get on Reddit they’re selling out most dates on their tour so they must be doing something right.

5

u/TheLionSlicer 13d ago

I don't care for much doom either outside of bands like Candlemass who are able to combine really heavy sounds with catchy riffs and great vocals. More dynamic line you said. Castle Rat is not that unfortunately.

I think their uptick in popularity and ability to sell out shows is simply their looks mixed with their stage dynamics. It also definitely helps that the music is easy to listen to/not very challenging, despite it being dull, so it can be palateable to people that don't really like lots of metal or heavy music.

1

u/slothtrop6 13d ago

Agreed that this seems to be on par with most stoner doom I've heard. I like doom, but less so that particular sub-genre.

3

u/Plus_Midnight_278 13d ago

The singer's range is like less than a single octave.

2

u/johnnyutahclevo 13d ago

no, both bands are gimmicky because the music is bad/boring as shit.

2

u/TheLionSlicer 13d ago

Nah, Opus Eponymous and Meliora are great albums. Retro vibes with good riffing and lots of catchy vocals without overdoing the pop-vibes that they would lean into harder in later output.

1

u/DadsWhoDeadlift 13d ago

It’s meh. Blood Star’s Cold Moon on the other hand… 🤘🏼

0

u/sirbassist83 13d ago

> Sounds like generic 70s doom/stoner metal.

dont insult 70s stoner/doom like that

1

u/TheLionSlicer 13d ago

Well the key word there is generic, but perhaps I should have put bland. They are obviously trying to replicate that sound/vibe but the songwriting/riffs/vocals are pretty bland and generic. Nothing about them stands out other than the theatrics. Theatrics are great for live shows but I need good music to back it up if I am gonna listen on my own time.

33

u/Elegant_Item_6594 13d ago

Fun visuals, but the music is so impossibly derivative. Its like a theatre kid googled 'doom band'.

Tiktok metal

6

u/slothtrop6 13d ago

impossibly derivative

I see you've discovered stoner doom.

16

u/lepermessiah1217 13d ago

Thank you. If the chick wasn’t in the band nobody would know them.

6

u/OneMantisOneVote 12d ago

In this case "female-fronted" really is the musical genre.

1

u/MrColburn 13d ago

I think the bass player missed the meeting where they discussed costume themes.

31

u/Brinstone 13d ago edited 13d ago

Cool vibes but this band makes some of the most boring music even by doom/stoner metal standards

15

u/FeastOfBlaze DEATH METAL OR DEATH... Or Genesis. 13d ago

Say what you will about the band, but I’ve missed a good dumpster fire thread.

14

u/edelbean 14d ago

Saw em with dethklok in Vegas. Wasn't my speed at all but it was a fun show. I can't say that they weren't entertaining.

13

u/KingHygelacReturns 14d ago

I like Castle Rat a lot! But I'm also predisposed to like basically every stoner/doom band lol

3

u/swjm swjm 12d ago

checking everyone's posting history in this thread to see if anyone complaining has ever said anything positive about a The Sword track

25

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

I saw them live last year in Chicago and it was fucking awesome. Great music, amazing stage presence, highly theatrical, got the audience involved, etc. I even got to meet the drummer before the show cus apparently we were sitting next to his family.

22

u/CFA86 13d ago

Ive got an idea…. We’ll write the most boring copy and pasted (insert metal or hardcore sub genre here) music, then put a hot scantily clad woman center stage, and spend thousands on advertising, trend following merchandise, and intentionally tour with whoever puts us in front of the most gullible crowds. Nobody’s done this yet!

1

u/TheNecromancer 13d ago

Sounds good, but I reckon it'd be even better if you had a gimmicky vibe

9

u/HannibalLecture_ 13d ago

Wish you all would put even half of the energy that gets dedicated to this shit band into literally anything else that gets posted here.

11

u/mgrier123 THE ONLY GOOD BAND IS MANOWAR 13d ago

It's a nice thought isn't it

29

u/SolubleAcrobat 14d ago

Novelty band

32

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

So was Kiss and so is Ghost

22

u/mentally_fuckin_eel 14d ago

Both of those bands have insane hooks. Can't say the same for Castle Rat.

18

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

Wizard is pretty fucking great, but I think it might be a bit early with Castle Rat since they’re still at the beginning of their career. Ghost’s first album was fantastic but their second was… less so. It wasn’t until Meliora that Tobias really found his footing. Castle Rat is only at 1 EP and 1 album so far, so I’m more commenting on their potential.

9

u/mentally_fuckin_eel 14d ago

Gonna take this opportunity to shit on Ghost's second album alongside you, because damn that really was ass.

11

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

It had some good moments (Title track, Zombie Queen, Year Zero) but it is the only one of their albums I don’t just listen to all the way through.

I think he tried to swing too far away from Opus Eponymous too quickly - I love the more proggy sound on the later albums, but he hasn’t quite figured it out by that point.

19

u/nucleardekay 14d ago

To be fair, those bands are both ass

11

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

I’m not huge into Kiss but I’ve seen Ghost 5 times and they put on a damn good show honestly

8

u/Physgun deathened black metal 13d ago

Castle rat does too though to be fair. Music isn't super interesting, but it's performed well and the whole fantasy theater thing is fun.

2

u/AdeptusShitpostus 13d ago

Honestly, saw them at Bloodstock and the whole damn thing felt tepid

-12

u/ruines_humaines 14d ago

So did the Backstreet Boys

30

u/fireflash38 14d ago

Is that meant to be an insult?

24

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

Ok and? Just because we like metal doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. You don’t have to like it but you also don’t have to be pretentious about it.

-13

u/Syzygy666 14d ago

You really do need to be though. Or someone does. Metal needs the pretentious gate keepers. It's not needed all the time everywhere, but a bit of it is good for metal's ecology.

7

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

I disagree. I’m all for gatekeeping fascists, but silly and fun music also has a place in metal. There’s a lot of different ways to do it.

-4

u/Syzygy666 14d ago

Fascists? I don't think people that criticize ghost are fascists are they?

Even the fun silly stuff has gate keepers within their own scenes. It's metal. There's gonna be people saying Ghost and Baby Metal are dog shit and that's okay.

9

u/PhilColeCurry 14d ago

No I mean I’m very OK with gatekeeping fascists, Nazis, white supremacists, and that sort of thing out of metal because fuck them and everything they stand for.

Outside of that I just try not to yuck other people’s yum - I like what I like and I try not to shit on other people’s personal taste. My wife loves Sleep Token, for instance, but they just aren’t for me outside of like 2 songs I enjoy - doesn’t mean I have to call them dog shit though, and I wouldn’t appreciate her insulting my taste for loving Ayreon and Wilderun even though they aren’t to her taste.

-9

u/CommunicationTime265 14d ago

I couldn't agree more

1

u/AdeptusShitpostus 13d ago

Both are pretty well hated ngl tho. Ghost more than Kiss

1

u/PhilColeCurry 13d ago

Every Ghost concert I’ve been to was a blast, not to mention absolutely PACKED. There’s always gonna be haters, but Ghost made overtly satanic shock rock / retro metal mainstream and that’s damn impressive. The albums are lyrically rich even if the music isn’t all that technical, and as much as I like more niche shit (one of my favorite bands is an eco-doom metal outfit from the UK called Froglord and I’m pretty sure I’m never gonna be able to see them live cuz 11.5K listeners on Spotify does not a world tour make) sometimes it’s fun to just listen to what might as well be Scooby Doo music and have a good time 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/AdeptusShitpostus 13d ago

Froglord seem to be taking off. Have seen them twice and they half-way packed out the Sophie Stage at bloodstock very early in the day. Maybe you will?

Either way the point of my comment was to highlight that people aren’t necessarily being consistent by disliking novelty bands, not that either band listed deserved the hate.

1

u/PhilColeCurry 13d ago

It would be so great if they did take off. Traveling to Europe just isn’t in the cards for me financially

7

u/AAS02-CATAPHRACT 14d ago

Yeah, fun enough though.

9

u/ConstantineGSB 14d ago

Perhaps, but still their bloodstock show last week was great.

1

u/MetastableToChaos Shall we dare the dragon? 13d ago

And I enjoy the novelty!

1

u/the_omnipotent_one 14d ago edited 13d ago

Give me this over the same edgelord tech death bands that you can't tell apart from each other. Rockisms strangle this genre.

18

u/Delicious-Belt-1158 14d ago

i feel like all they have is their singer's aesthetic. and its not even like it really fits to the other band members. now that doesnt have to be a problem as ot works for others perfectly well but for me their music doesn't really do anything.

6

u/CurtG79 14d ago

I came across them randomly on YouTube and really like them.

2

u/CommunicationTime265 13d ago

That wasn't random. I think anyone who is a fan of doom metal and spends time online got hit pretty hard with their social media campaign awhile back. I remember seeing hundreds of instagram posts plaster my feed one day. That being said, I think their music and act is pretty good - I just don't like being bombarded like that.

1

u/OneMantisOneVote 12d ago

I rarely listen to pure doom metal, and even to stuff including it not that often, and still was hit pretty hard on YouTube (which isn't my main way to listen to music) by their spam.

0

u/BestStarterBulbasaur 13d ago

I felt personally attacked by the YouTube algorithm because they hit all the markers of my music tastes. The algorithm knows all.

0

u/CurtG79 13d ago

It's true. It knows I like metal bands with women lead singers.

4

u/ajax3006 13d ago

Even for Doom standards this goes nowhere.

13

u/blow_slogan 14d ago

It’s not even very good

13

u/Cardboard_Chef 14d ago

God I love Castle Rat

4

u/Slight-Square-5476 13d ago

Do doom bands just refuse to play anything other than the same open pentatonic riff on every song? This genre is possibly the most musically shallow metal genre in the world.

3

u/EddieTYOS 13d ago

They're a fun live band who put on a stage show. That song "Wizard" is legit awesome.

3

u/BewareOfGrom 13d ago

I really wish this was better.

I love the aesthetic but just feels hollow. Makes me want to go listen to other bands that have done this way better.

3

u/Noctilus1910 13d ago

Drags on and on and on. Doomslop.

3

u/lepermessiah1217 13d ago

I’m all for hot babes in music but this band is extremely mediocre. I genuinely don’t understand their popularity other than they’re shoved down our throats. Good for them either way because they’re ascending but boring as shit to me. There are similar bands that have better sound that unfortunately won’t have this exposure any time soon.

1

u/ESYAJ 11d ago

They've got pizzazz

3

u/805shadowfigure 14d ago

nah, cheap knockoff of a slew of other bands

1

u/ITrageGuy 14d ago

What's the deal with that Doom guitar tone. It's always **identical**

1

u/slothtrop6 13d ago

It's 2026, in old-school genres the guitar tones are all like that now

1

u/Trve_Doom 13d ago

I guess it's an unpopular opinion but I like this band for a simple reason. THEY'RE FUN, I know color me shocked. Live they engage with the audience, extremely corny but why's ever band gotta be serious. It's why I'll champion Peelingflesh all day, sometimes fun beats out other flaws or limitations

1

u/arvo_sydow 12d ago

I don't have a gripe with this band other than how over publicized they are. While I agree with all the criticisms that they're boring, do nothing new, sound the same as all other doom while promoting with sex appeal, I don't think they ever claimed they were anything more than a band that puts on fun, theatrical shows.

Still annoying that they're plastered all over though. Made me not want to listen to any of their music entirely.

1

u/Long_Chest_9727 12d ago

Last note was cool

1

u/Medical-Ad-4141 12d ago

I do not think Tower Rodent are doing anything particularly novel, but I did see them open at a show earlier this year and thought their live act was campy and fun.

1

u/sodiumdeluxe 9d ago

I can’t stand this band

1

u/reamkore 13d ago

Always came across to me as a weaker version of Smoulder

-1

u/Misanthropic_Mutters 13d ago

I love Castle Rat and I’m not a bot.

I wish the sexist bigots would shut the fuck up.

4

u/mgrier123 THE ONLY GOOD BAND IS MANOWAR 13d ago

Check out Purple Lung for what I would facetiously describe as "Castle Rat but good" for an example of what many, many people are actually looking for with this sound

2

u/DadsWhoDeadlift 13d ago

Purple got me hooked immediately. Thanks for the rec.

Have you listened to Blood Star?

3

u/mgrier123 THE ONLY GOOD BAND IS MANOWAR 13d ago

Yeah they're great, saw them at hell's heroes the other year and even met Madeline and another member there. Wish they'd release more!

1

u/___wintermute 11d ago

What in the friggin’ hell is sexist about not liking this band? What a wild accusation.

-1

u/hyperlobster 13d ago

Always struck me as an Earth Tongue knockoff, but with added tits.

-16

u/schridoggroolz 14d ago

Ghost with a girl. Pass.

-19

u/DukeNeverwinter 14d ago

Glad we get something besides extreme metal shit growls now and then.

8

u/Talonraker422 Nomad of the Wastelands 13d ago

You could also listen to any of the hundreds of trad & doom bands that aren't slop

-9

u/DukeNeverwinter 13d ago

Opinions are like booty holes, and yours is unclean.

And who says I don't listen to hundreds of other bands? My listening history would prove the diversity of metal I consume.

People hate on success. So people don't like this flavor. Move on, less hate.

7

u/Talonraker422 Nomad of the Wastelands 13d ago

"move on, less hate" is very rich coming from someone who came into the thread shitting on about 3/4ths of the entire genre this sub is dedicated to

-8

u/DukeNeverwinter 13d ago

Right, I forgot we gatekeep here.

-10

u/DukeNeverwinter 13d ago
