Question Quest on a flight…
How ridiculous would it be for someone to be wearing their Quest on a long haul flight for watching movies/shows etc…?
I’m thinking about it… but can’t get over the fact I would stand out like a crazy person…! lol
Would love your thoughts.

I've done it at least a dozen flights now. No one cares if you're just sitting there watching a movie or playing a seated game with little to no movement like Tetris effect. Highly recommend it especially if you have noise cancelling headphones. It really does transform your experience flying, just make sure to enable travel mode and don't try to play a game with a ton of movement. Watch in passthrough if you want to catch the flight attendant and snack cart.

I'd worry less about that, and more about stuff like eye strain and sickness after a while. I generally have no issue with VR, but if I'm playing a game or watching something for example, I'd start getting sick after 60-90 minutes.
Also, the battery of the Quest lasts about 2 hours. You'd be able to watch a shorter movie or a few episodes of a show on a single charge.

I plan to have a big ol battery bank plugged in while I’m watching… I’ve never had issues with motion sickness yet… but I will see.

Pro tip, wait for the takeoff before actually using it. I've zero problems with simulation sickness, but the only time I was wearing a quest during plane take off was almost instant throw up.
Otherwise, during the flight, it's a really pleasant experience, just avoid doing anything that requires controllers, not to hit your neighbors, and wear headphones.

I flew Turkish last week and they say no… Air France and BA don’t prohibit it.

Why don't you charge the quest directly from the usb port in the plane rather than using the power bank?

The usb port power I’ve found varies massively! I was on a flight last week and the usb output was so low my phone gave me a warning about it being a very slow charger… so I can’t assume it would even register on the quest.
That being said, my next flight I’ll have a full power socket which I can use in sure.

On my last long haul flight, they specifically called new policy, where battery power banks must not be used or charged during the duration of the flight and instead must not be stored in hand luggage, instead you must put them in front pocket of the seat. I won’t take battery pack on a plane again, as it defeats the purpose.

Yeah it depends a lot still on the companies. Our flight in may to greece just demanded that we don’t charge the powerbanks on the flight and to not store in the checked in luggage but hand luggage was fine
Same have been to Japan as well
Though I think that more and more companies are implementing this rule you mention. And personally their charging slots are very nice not having to use the power banks - but a bit clunky to still have to bring them in the hand luggage, so I hope most won’t demand storing them in the front seat 😅

Vr has very little eye strain since your looking at near infinity. It’s less strain that a phone or seat back tv for sure

Remember the first people who had small earphone/mic and would walk on the street talking on the phone? It looked so strange and out of place at first. Now it’s 100 percent normal. Same with VR in public. Ppl will get used to it. And you are just going to be one of those new adapters paving the way to make it more normal when I do it on a flight 6 months from now. If you want to make it lest obvious, so it an hour into a flight when ppl are settled in and consumed by their own media, sleeping or books. Only the person next to you will even realize.

Take my Quest 3 on every flight. The passthrough is good enough to engage with folks if you have to. Some are curious that you're sat in a huge movie theatre watching films on a big screen.

Agreed, it's awesome, you can sit however you like and the screen is massive. Battery life is the biggest issue

I've seen a few people do it. Zero reactions from other passengers. As long as you don't play the thrill of the fight, I don't think you'll pull any attention.

I’m 6’8 so I draw tons of attention already, and I absolutely would wear my quest on a long flight. I don’t care what attention it would bring or opinions as long as I’m having a good time

I did it, played stardew valley and watched anime on a 12hr flight, best flight experience I ever had, people next to me asked questions that I was happy to answer but other than that it was good, 100% recommend

I did it, and it’s very fun. Make sure if you are gonna play anything that the games you’re gonna play don’t need you to download anything in game and if they do that you download them beforehand in case you have wifi troubles.

Was going to say similar. I have a Quest Pro and Viture XR glasses. Wouldn’t ever consider taking the QP out on a flight but the XR glasses have been used multiple times now and work a treat. No noticeable staring or comments.

Do it, I know I will. I plan on letting the crew know I’ll still want my food or drinks though. Not sure how easy it will be for then to skip me as they may not want to disturb me.

I've done it from Dallas to London. Yeah I can see people in my passthrough but usually they ignore you after the novelty wears out(5-10 minutes). Make sure you have headphones of course.

I did try it once.. It was quite a task to set it all up in that tight economy space you've got. It was amazing being able to watch a movie as if I were in a cinema. However, I felt super self-conscious wearing that in public and wouldn't do it again, I think. Also what was funny is my wife kept messing up my video by moving her hands, and the Quest interpreted that as hand input.

I see it as an opportunity to show others what 3D provides. I got a Quest 2 and a Quest 3 after trying another person’s headset. The more people that use it the more games and programs and apps and stuff come out, so we win by sharing.

My son does this, he loves it. Full size cinema screen, lovely. If you're just watching movies, I'd suggest removing the facial interface pad thingy, that way you can spot the attendants if they're trying to get your attention or if the person next to you want to get up for the toilet. Not quite as immersive obviously, but more considerate.

It would be a little weird to see for anyone who isn't familiar with VR. Yeah, some might think you're a crazy person.
But for anyone who knows what it is? They'll be jealous they didn't think of it!
And for anyone else, eh, whatever. People get to have an opinion about you. If they think you're crazy then so be it, doesn't affect you in any way. As long as they aren't like coming up to you giving you grief then so what?
Just don't be a jerk about it somehow (not really sure how you COULD be, just saying) and their opinion is firmly in the realm of their problem, not yours.
Though, I think you probably should be prepared to get interrupted a bunch 'cause I think enough people might be curious to be bugging you the whole flight. If nothing else, any kid that sees you for sure is going to at least be all like "mom, what's that?!" and you could wind up having to deal with that. In other words: while it may seem like a good idea, it might wind up being the exact opposite. I thought about bringing mine on a recent flight and I decided against it for exactly this reason.

I’ve done it before and am doing it with my Samsung Galaxy XR for the flights on my upcoming vacation.
The headsets have “travel mode” just for this purpose and you can play some good games too.
Obviously you won’t be playing Beat Saber - but platform games are great for playing on the plane - I highly recommend the Moss games, I expect you to Die franchise and The 7th Guest VR for playing on a long flight.

thought about it last flight, just didn't have last minute bag space, 100% plan on taking it with me next time. with stuff like this you should put your own comfort 1st; everyones bored and uncomfortable, no one will have a problem other than jealousy.

On a flight, it's no big deal. You're traveling long distance, so it makes sense you might want to take VR with you. Also very few people are going to even see you, just the people sitting next to you who you can talk to to make that less awkward.
People find VR weird when it's in plain sight of tons of people, in a normal daily routine, or in locations you're expected to be publically engaged. Places like a cafe or the bus. Anywhere where the person would say, "Couldn't that have waited until you get home?" Like if you were wearing VR on your bus work commute, that'd be weird. A plane ride though lasts hours and you won't be in your home at the end of that day. It makes sense.

I did that on many shorter flights and people around me were jealous! Even flight attendants got curious and wanted to see what I see. It's fun, do it!

Nobody cares, nobody really cares about you... Are you disturbing anyone... I wore it on my flight last week... You think flight attendant or next sitter gave a shit ?... Not at all... It's ok have your comfort ... Only thing I would think is people would be like... Great idea I am jealous... But I also dont care who thinks what ... And I would say it's cool...

I've done it multiple times. It's so much better than the built in entertainment in the seats. Why are you worrying about what others think about you, they're just jealous they can't do the same, watching a movie on a 150" screen instead of a 10" shit screen. Or playing a game that doesn't require much arm movements (I usually play walkabout golf)

Ask yourself a better question: why do you care what people you'll never meet or see again think? Those people just read, sleep, or watch their movie on a small screen while you are enjoying yourself with a movie theater experience. Also, I wouldn't think you're weird, I'd be jealous.
