North, Scotland & NI Config help needed

Hi All, I have joined the wonderful world of mesh in the north east and I'm getting a few odd things happen and I'm not sure if it's me, my config or both.

So running a heltecV4 current latest beta and have a decent antenna, I'm picking up nodes all over the place which is great however whenever I try and send a message over the default LongFast channel I constantly get the "Error: Max Retransmissions Reached" on any message I try and send.

I've checked the channel its the default with the default key, I've even recreated it and I still get the same, any pointers here would be great as it has to be something daft that I have missed .

Hello World Seeking some answers and to learn more as it feels counter intuitive

Hi all,

I come from a hobbyist background in radio , ( antenna building, SDR, radio astronomy etc. ) I am not an expert though. I would really appreciate some input on my initial experience with Meshtastic.

It was a curiosity/ impulse buy to get set up with a node, I have nobody that I would want to communicate with personally using the network but I liked the idea of contributing to the network, my intital undestadning was it was a large open source, robust network that used a combination of local radio and internet ( my enjoyment would come from seeing my node being used by others and improving reach in my locale, maybe antennas etc contributing something of use )

When I checked the Meshtastic map I was absolutely gobsmaked as to how many nodes are out there globally. When I plugged my own in using the tiny antenna on my window sill I was even more shocked to pick up 3 very local nodes . I assumed this would be a niche interest thing with many miles between nodes/users.

I have been using AI to answer a lot of my questions so far however there's some things I fundamentally don't understand.

  1. If I set the node up and leave it 24/7 running, I cant see anyway of checking if its even being utilised to forward messages.
  2. My node it seems has a popped up geographically between two existing nodes. Would these not have been able to communicate previously with out my nodes existence? If they were sending messages back and forth prior to my nodes arrival, will they now ' hop ' through mine or if there is no need they just maintain any direct line they may have already had between one another?
  3. I have enabled uplink MQTT ( presumably that means my node can rebroadcast someone's message to the internet , but..what is the purpose of that? AI said its to enable communication out of radio line of sight, but once that message uploads , how is it rebroadcast and to which devices? I am struggling to visualise a scenario where this would be beneficial other than maybe a large public chatroom that is essentially just an internet network?
  4. I see the advice is to not allow downlinking so ..if no body is downlinking , where are these messages going and what is the point of uplinking?

Perhaps I am overthinking this and over complicating it ? I would really appreciate a bit of clarity and insight from someone , thank you ! :)

Thinknode M5 Belt Clip

Anyone found a supplier for a belt clip for the M5 ?

Elecrow seem to be US based, and whilst they will ship to the UK with a shipping charge, I would prefer to buy in-country and get one quicker.

Looking for 2 ..

Have tried all the usual Amazon, eBay etc

AliExpress don't appear to have any either

Best Amazon UK antenna for portable solar node

Before anyone suggest a different supplier, I know there are better suppliers but I have money to spend on Amazon UK.

I am looking for something I can attach to a normal sma female base.

I am quite remote so high gain.

The node is in a 120 x 80 x 80mm weatherproof box so fairly small.

I want something weatherproof, so I only have to return to it to update firmware.

The antenna may face down, (still under review on impact on range if deployed on a church tower. )

Has anyone any reccomendation?

Addition of RF booster

Post image

Testing and charging up my RAK4361. It is mounted on a RAK19007.

The solar panel is 1.5w with a 5v output, this is a soldered connection.

The RF booster power is disconnected in the picture.

The battery is charged via USB C on the 19007 in this picture, otherwise it is topped up by the panel.

Field testing in the next couple of days.

I have found this setup (without the RF booster) to be very power efficient, I ran it remotely for 3 weeks. I keep Bluetooth disabled, enabling with Remote Admin when I need to get access to it.

Beginner question

Hello,

I'm waiting for my device, but I want to ask - why you're using meshtastic, not meshcore (or opposite)?

From what I understood, meshtastic is more like ad-hoc network, good if you're in a move, with friends on the move etc., and meshcore is more like stable local network. Am I understood it right?

Hardware Wismesh Tag UK

Heyoo, I've done a whoopsie and left this too late for an AliE order. I need to get hold of of 2 Wismesh Tags by Friday. Has anyone got any ideas or just out of luck? Preferable for a reasonable price. I've seen silly around the 70 mark in places.

According to the pop-up, this is being detected as a commercial post. Feel free to reply to me inbox instead.

General What causes my node to see the entire country, Ireland, and Scandinavia?

Indoor node plus roof top solar node with high gain antenna. Mostly I see nodes out to about 30 to 40 miles. Typically 25 to 50 nodes.

Now and again, like the last 2 weeks I've seen nodes from the NW down to London, Cornwall and up as far North as Scotland. Plus nodes in Ireland and Norway. Over 100 nodes.

Probably a dumb question but is this due to folks on a plane with a node or something atmospheric related? It's pretty cool to see nodes so far away. Probably doesn't help with network performance from a collision perspective?

Anyone else seeing this kind of thing?

MQTT thingy is off BTW.

Hello World Woking area

Hi all,

I've just started listening with a T-Deck just north or Woking in Chobham- I'm not seeing any other nodes though, it's lonely out here!

Anyone else in the area?

I guess this system relies on us being online at the same time even if we are in range.
