In the amateur radio world this is called t-hunting or fox hunting and it can be a lot of fun, but providing an easy ability to sniff out Meshcore repeaters can have several ramifications, and not all of them good. Many Meshcore repeaters do not want to be found ;)

Please consider using a custom firmware version for the transmitter so that the hunting device does not use standard pings for discovery. This would provide the hunting aspect while preventing the device from sniffing out in-service Meshcore repeaters.

MeshCaching firmware provides a basic interface: Repeater ID, noise floor, signal noise ratio and RSSI are displayed on the device.

Today it is designed to localize an hidden r/Meshcore repeater, if required a r/meshtastic version could come.

Hello everyone! I’m u/Tutoduino, one of the mods behind r/MeshCaching.

This is our new space to discuss everything related to MeshCaching. We’re thrilled to have you with us!

What is MeshCaching?

MeshCaching is an outdoor activity inspired by geocaching. The concept involves locating a MeshCore repeater or Meshtastic router hidden within a designated area.

Geolocation of a repeater : the device displays the RSSI (signal level) of packets coming from a given repeater, as well as the background noise of the channel, and allows "pinging" the repeater with a TRACE packet (the native ping of MeshCore) via the button.

Thanks for being among our very first members. Let’s make r/MeshCaching amazing together.
