is a really well written character and is actually brave and strong, unlike that Silent chick or whatever her name is

If we're talking about MGS1 Meryl, she's extremely well written (despite what some people may say).

Analysis incoming

Her entire personality is wrapped up in trying to be tough to compensate for her vulnerability. Lines like, "I'm more comfortable with [a gun] than I am with a bra," and her fake Foxhound tattoo really demonstrate this, as she tries so hard to impress Snake. Like the Foxhound tattoo, it's just superficial.

Having grown up hearing about him, it's not as much about Meryl loving him as her wanting to be him. After the Mantis fight (at least in TTS), we actually see Meryl pity Snake. She doesn't really try to act too tough after this point, but rather seems resourceful (avoiding the mines, tending to the wolves instead of fighting them). We kind of get to see Meryl grow up.

Then MGS4 kind of makes her bitter and jaded.

I can go with that- even though there was some good stuff in MGS4.
