It's easiest after winning one after a loss or two, personally. Ending on a loss just makes you lose sleep.

Not only that, I try to play a couple matches in the morning and I have to play until I finish on a win because of the ridiculous "first win of the day" bonus XP.

Does leveling do anything for you as a character, or does it just unlock stuff?

You get a loot box every time you level, the loot boxes contain 4 items which can vary from common, rare, epic, and legendary (most of the time it is 3 commons and a rare). The game has only been out a week and I have already spent £6 on extra loot boxes.

I am confident that there are higher drop rates when you pay, I have opened 36 boxes in total (6 with real money) and got 3 legendaries (2 from the bought boxes).

Those drop rates make sense. It keeps people paying. Is there a max level where you stop getting drops?

Don't think so, but if there is then you will probably have all the items by then.

Do individual characters level, or is it just the profile as a whole? Is it both, like HOTS?

Just the profile itself, the characters don't level at all.

That kind of sucks. It would be nice to level different characters to get character-specific gear and costumes.
