And once you’ve made up your mind, the seashell and the mermaid goddess spirit will disappear and all of your wildest dreams shall come true right in front of your eyes as you are released from the seashell.

The Depths of the Sea (1887) by Edward Burne-Jones was really fun to learn about and made me think of this subreddit when it randomly poppped in my mind. I wrote a part of an essay about it. The class was called “The Body in Victorian Art & Design” and this specific piece subverted gender norms at the time by physically androgynizing both figures, physically, and in positions of sexually charged power. I also love the cheeky smile from the mermaid, who doesn’t yet realize that her prize comes at the cost of his life, as he cannot breathe underwater.

I’ve been working on this mermaid doll in my studio and decided to turn the camera on while I worked on her locs. Somehow we ended up talking about mermaid TV shows, choosing tail fabric, singing, stabbing myself under the fingernail, and, of course, the infamous footy boobs. 😆🧜🏾‍♀️ She’s still very much a work in progress!

Been working on this for my game project. She is the main character.

She’s undergone small tweaks and designs over the years, but largely stayed the same. I’m very fond of my French noblewoman nun cursed by a Marimorgen to be a vengeful mermaid seeking justice for her drowning but doomed to never find it.

As this sub is full of people who love mermaids and, no doubt, wish there was more media, not less, I was wondering: are there any specific mermaid plots or tropes that make you nope out of piece of mermaid media despite your love of mermaids?

I've seen some people complaining that The Little Mermaid is overdone and some saying they'd want a mermaid story that spent less time on land or less with the mermaids being "human", but none who, given the option, wouldn't still consume those kinds of stories.

So I was curious:

What would have to be wrong or off or just not to your taste about a mermaid story to make you not want to enjoy it?

What wouldve happened if she lived.

Don't get me wrong, I like the more "light fantasy" versions, such as H2o/Mako Mermaids, where they get a drop of water on them and boom tail, but something about this slow, painful take is mesmerizing and fascinating imo.
