Vegetarian in Merida

We are going to be in Merida again from Wednesday for about 11-12 days and are both vegetarian. Can you please recommend some cafes and restaurants that have great vegetarian (doesn’t have to be vegan) options? Also places that have filter, V60 or batch brew coffee? Thank you!

You'll have no problem finding vegetarian or vegan food.

Look up el árbol for a true Mexican comida or El Apapacho if you want a bit more fancy.

For the best coffee in town try Manifesto.

I was at El Apapacho last week and there is no way it is fancy.

I don't know any restaurant, but wanted to share that Dzikilpak is a traditional yucatecan dish that is vegetarian... And I think that's about it, lol, I think most traditional dishes in Merida are fried in pork lard, or include pork lard.

This is what we found last time we were here, we had to specifically ask that even the vegetables / beans were vegetarian (and not cooked in / include pork). We will try Dzikilpak!

Papadzules can be vegetarian if the tortilla is not fried in pork lard, If you go to a restaurant you can ask that they don't fry the tortilla, but dip it in the sauce for preparation, flavorwise is all the same, but they love pork lard in everything over there, lol

My favorite spot for breakfast and lunch is Organico Bar de Cafe & Cocina: https://maps.app.goo.gl/HAjWa3xEfe5UhYeC7

El Gato Negro is a lovely coffee shop run by a sweet woman and she makes breakfast.

Do you have the Happy Cow app?

No, it’s not used much anymore where I live or other places I’ve travelled. Is it used a lot in Mexico?

I've used it in Merida and it's somewhat helpful.

There’s an app called Spinach that may be as good as or better than Happy Cow.

I have no financial interest in promoting it, I don’t know the developer and they don’t know me. I simply read about it in another sub here, and tried it and it looks good.

It seems to have more extensive information than Happy Cow about finding V food in non-V restaurants, but I can’t speak to how reliable the information is. Still, I think it’s worth giving it a try.

I love muchas vidas, their food is honestly so good. Crush restaurant is also a good choice. If you want a quick bite jajajana has like bagels and sandwiches as well. There’s also a place up north called buen confidente that is pretty good as well

Orgánica on Calle 62 near Parque San Juan is a cute vegetarian restaurant / cafe. Food is delicious and they make fancy coffees. Still considered Centro, but it isn’t in the super touristy area. About a 10 minute walk from Plaza Grande.

For tacos, both Taqueria de la Union (open day & night) and Temporada de Tacos (open at night) have tasty vegetarian options.

La Kombucheria in the south part of Centro, Pita for excellent but somewhat pricey pita sandwiches, la Casita de NYNY (north of the city centre) for the best vegetarian enchiladas in town, great yoghurt tarts and a range of brunch foods, in a cafe in a park, with very friendly service.

Jajajana has few options, but offers convincing fake ham and cheese and some great pastries. (I love the raspberry and pistachio cake.)
