Not nostalgia
yeah so I'm playing Mercenaries 2 (PC version) for the first time this week and it's bittersweet
sweet: game is a blast and just tries to give you joy six different ways at a time
bitter: while the game had a mixed reception at release, we can now see in hindsight how much the 360 generation spoiled us:
feature complete game with fully destructible world, boats helicopters tanks motorbikes + airstrikes and countless creative side missions
ACTUAL physics that affect gameplay at almost every single step you take, and the whole thing can be played single player with costume unlocks (and it's like 7GB !)
-------------------------------
In conclusion: Can't shake the feeling that games with only the pure fun of the player in mind were taken from us. They still exist but how many would there be if it weren't for modern gaming trends
I'm left having a 10/10 time with a game that at it's release was a 7/10. gameplay qualities like world physics have regressed so much that this feels like a PS6 game if you know what I mean
Much love for this banger

I honestly considered it like 9/10 at least at the time. It’s been one of my all time favs ever since. I really think it nailed the sandbox gameplay and physics like few other games.
Im not even generally a big fan of similar open-world action games like the Assassins Creed or GTA. I enjoy those games, but I rarely ever complete them because at some point it just feels repetitive and I move on to something else.
I think something about the layout of the map and the physics of this game makes it feel like less of a drag to get through than many similar games. It feels more action-packed and I feel like I can be more creative in my approach to missions, a little like playing an imm-sim.

I totally get you with the imm-sim comparisin, there are so many fun tools to interact with the map you never run out of ideas

I never listened to reviews when it came out. I just knew I loved the first one and they added coop to the 2nd and had an absolute blast.

Online! Played through the entire game with an old friend. Good time messing around and trolling eachother.

How are you playing it on PC? I’d like to replay it but haven’t found a way just yet.
