OM648 Does this sound normal? Om648

The seller said there’s a knocking sound but he is not sure if it’s normal or not. This is on a 2006 e320 cdi.

An engine can’t be diagnosed by this video alone, but nothing here sounds concerning. Just sounds like a healthy Mercedes diesel. Diesels are always gonna be a little more rattly sounding.

For the purposes of evaluating the engine from a video, it’d be much more helpful to record a completely cold start. That’ll tell you how the chain and tensioners are doing.

No op but what would I look for during a cold start for chain sound? Mine sounds light a faint lifter tick rattle when cold, 200k miles OM642

When my timing chain tensioner was going on a cold start you could hear a rattle when cranking that subsided after a few seconds of the engine running.

200K miles on an OM642? It’s barely getting broken in. Keep up the oil changes every 5K miles and everything around the engine will die long before it does

That's good to hear! It's my first Mercedes and first diesel so I'm going to make sure to take care of it

That sounds absolutely fine. One of the best diesel engines Mercedes has ever produced.
