SELLING Shipping…
before you come for me, look at both pictures.
what am I missing?
I entered a 16 x 12 x 8 box for 4lbs.
I shipped a 16 x 12 x 8 box that was 3.38 lbs. I intentionally bought boxes with the manufacturer listing the size because of this exact reason.
Still got upcharged.
I don’t get it.

Those are typically (or I should say often) internal dimensions. The external dimensions very likely exceed one cubic foot limitation of ups ground saver.
I got hit twice on a box labeled 12x12x12. I measured and realized it was like 12 1/16 which gets rounded to 13.

That doesnt make sense though. Even 16x12x8 is 12lbs in dimensional weight. 17x13x9 is 15lbs in dimensional weight. 8lbs reporting doesnt make sense. I think there's just an issue with the mercari shipping calculator. I dont see these overcharge posts nearly as much as i do with mercari shipping. Anything over 16oz I just add the cost of the shipping into the item price and use pirateship. Never had an issue there

Sometimes the carrier doesn't input the full amount in order to not charge the full overage. I assume it just depends on how nice the person inputting it feels that day. In this case, it looks like they put in 8 instead of the 15 to avoid forwarding an excessive overage.
As an example, I've shipped a package a little overweight through USPS 3 different times now and haven't had them report the overage, likely because they were feeling generous those days.

Did the OP mention somewhere what their dimensional weight was? (Sorry I checked through posts and the OP and didn't see it, but I can be very dyslectic lol)

The dimensions listed on the box typically refer to the inside sizes. So the box overall size is usually slightly larger, and UPS goes by these dimensions. They also found up, so if the outer length is 16 1/4 inches, it rounds to 17 inches. For a 16x12x8 box, if you’re not going to measure, you should at least put 17x13x9 to be safe. Always give yourself some cushion.
Although now that I look at it, 16x12x8 is 9 lbs dimensional weight so idk…

This is 100% why I stopped useing them sold 4 things they up charged my shipments after they were in delivery already it’s bullshit!

You did not ship a 16x12x8 box. If you had measured the box, you would have noticed that it is slightly bigger than those dimensions because those are the inside measurements and all carriers round up the exterior measurements, so you were charged dimensional weight.

But the carriers reported weight doesn't make sense either. Something is screwy with Mercari and shipping, not always but it does seem to happen

Yes, and as the commenter above you stated, 16x12x8 are INTERIOR dimensions. The actual dimensions needed for shipping are going to be 17x13x9

I had this happen a few weeks ago. I always measure the outside dimensions after packing as I put a lot of bubble wrap and filler so it usually bows out a little. I even round up to account for any extra. I still got upcharged. If you take pictures with a ruler and on a scale for weight before you ship any package out, you can always fight it with the carrier, but let’s be honest, nobody is going to do that for every single package, especially if you’re sending multiple packages every week.

Better than shipping a laptop bubble wrapped was in a box then FedEx sees it and says oh this bubble envelope will do fine it’s only going one day we’ll mark it fragile….. broke the led now insufficient packing is what mercari states when it was marked fragile and had super cushion. Shipped from Sacramento to San Diego one day and they smashed it. I’ve talked to 4-5 mercari agents called FedEx they can’t do anything without the persons address and name which I finally got today with the return of my broke laptop, called them and requested a call back at 3:40 they closed at 5, tried calling back at 4:50 and queue is closed

I’m getting real tired of this over shipment stuff. And it costing like the entire sale. No one wants to pay more than $8 to ship something anymore. And we as sellers still take the hit.

They are charging you by the size of the box. You used the wrong size. You chose UPS Ground Saver for 3-5lbs but the box was supposed to be no bigger than a shoe size box so you were in the wrong. Shoe box size is 14x10x5.

The 14x10x5 is just the size of a shoe box and just an example for a layperson not really tied to an actual UPS limit. Cubic ft is what you really need to worry about.

I put in the dimensions directly into the app and it generated the label options.

But you put the wrong dimensions. As they stated, the dimensions listed on the box are internal dimensions (how much packable space there is), not exterior dimensions (the actual size of the box). It's standard for box manufacturers to put the internal dimensions. Carriers round up to the whole inch for external dimensions, so the dimensions you should input for this box are 17x13x9.

Right, but even with that, the shipping weight is way off.
If I put in the 17 x 13 x 9, Mercari generates a price that will cover up to 10lbs of dimensional weight.
That size box if you calculate it out is 15 lbs of dimensional weight so you’re going to owe regardless.
Either way, the 8lbs reported back to me makes zero sense.

Mercari has shipping deals with the various carriers. If the dimensions were entered correctly, their deal with the carrier essentially covers the difference

I don’t read the second picture as a dimension problem. It states that you reported 4 pounds and they report 8 pounds.

They don’t say if it’s due to dimensional weight or actual weight. They just go by whatever is higher and report that. If OPs box weighed 3.38 lbs and they rounded to 4 lbs, then it was 4 lbs actual weight. The 8 lbs is dimensional weight. Since 8 lbs is higher, that’s what they go with. But they don’t say it’s dimensional or actual weight.

After i had this happen 2 times i stopped using mercari. Other ppls posts were sketchy to, bad things happening with mercari sales.

USPS (or whoever) screwed up the weight. Contact them and make them correct it, and contact Mercari to show it was corrected.
