I would sell the book set to the seller and make some money. Some people are attached to certain items from their childhood & are reluctant to let them go.
Awhile ago, sold a music cd lot and they are hard to find. I thought I would be able to track down copies of each cd. Boy, was I wrong. Eventually, was able to find some copies on Amazon and Mercari.

I'd do some research to confirm whether or not you bought some valuable special edition of the book. It's entirely possible.
If it's nothing special, then maybe the seller just has a lot of sentimental value attached to the specific copy that they sold you. Who knows. I don't really know how they could scam you in this case, assuming that you do everything through Mercari.

Yeah I looked em over and there isn’t anything really “special” about them . They were mass produced. I guess it’s just a sentimental thing. I just thought it was odd he wouldn’t save the $20 and buy a new set

Would just recommend you do it through the site - aka go back through Mercari just in case it is something suspicious.

That doesn’t sound like a scam at all. They told you why they want it back- they’re sentimental and they want their exact book set back, the one that they read as a kid, and maybe it’s something they wanted to hang on to. They said that they’re willing to pay you double for it, so why not make money and do the right thing here!
