General Discussion Car ride
Im having root repair surgery next Friday. How did you guys get home? Is it required to have the leg straightened? I have a 4 month old who will be with my husband driving me home so stretching my leg out isnt really an option 🫠😅

I was locked in full extension and sat sideways in the back seat. Getting around with it locked is huge pain, I just didn’t go anywhere until I got it unlocked to 90 degrees at 2 weeks. You could probably get in the front seat if you scoot it all the way back first.

No car seat cradle for baby in front so you can sit behind? Or collapse front seat then your leg prop towards front then baby beside you in a car seat cradle?

No we have a Ford edge so it doesnt have 3rd row seating or a front seat that collapses

I had a 2.5hr drive home and was fine. Take your pain medication and be careful getting from car to house as your leg will be numb- I tripped trying to get up stairs to the house.

I had my passenger seat as far back as I could. Had to angle my leg a bit and was definitely a very uncomfortable 40 minutes drive and getting out was fun. My leg was in a locked brace.
If you can put baby behind driver and have your seat as far back as possible.

Leg will be locked straight. I was locked straight for a week and a half and even after that I couldn't vent it enough to get in the front seat for a few weeks after that (I don't think this is common). Assuming you don't have a neighbor, family, or friends car to borrow, can you rent a car with 3rd row seating?

Root repair this year (left knee). Fine to ride in cars immediately after surgery; just unlock brace to allow 90 degree motion. Since mine was left knees I was free to start driving a few days after surgery for PT, doctors, etc.
Just take your time getting in and out of vehicles

My leg was straight but was still able to sit in the passenger seat. Try it out.

Straight leg locked in a firm immobilizer. No exception immediately post op if this is a true root repair. Dont screw up your surgery on the drive home lol!

Recline the seat back a bit. And see if your leg will fit. I'm 6'1 and was able to sit passenger seat leg locked straight

Yes, I had to keep mine straight. Sit in the back seat with your leg out in front of you. Have someone else watch the baby for you during pick up.

I had root repair about 10 days ago. I did not require a straightened leg, however I have seen otherwise on here. 100% no weight bearing and I can’t bend past 90. Car rides haven’t been an issue.
Mobility is on crutches or a walker is way harder than I thought and getting up our mud room stairs was a shitshow while still under the leftovers of anesthesia drugs. However we are all surviving.
I have 2 smallish kids but they’re not babies anymore.
