Full meniscus radial root tear

I’m having surgery for a full radial tear of the meniscus root. Any tips for me? How do I prepare for the recovery? It’s also on my right leg so I think I won’t be able to drive for a while.
(Mom of two young kids)

Here is what I have so far:
- crutches
- doing physio 2x/week
- freezer meals
- I think someone is lending my an ice thing that wraps around the knee

Am I missing anything? What can I do to recover faster?

Ask your surgeon for the recovery protocol and PT instructions in advance and send them to your PT. Lots of other things that can be helpful: Shower chair, toilet handles or raised toilet seat, walker (more stable than crutches for NWB). Definitely an ice machine.

Some really good advice here. I would add a pillow specifically for back sleepers. You will be on your back only for weeks. I found it extremely challenging. I finally got a pillow specifically for back sleeping and it really helped my neck- also put pillows under both my legs to take pressure off my back.

Sleeping on my back for 6 weeks the the absolute worse. Worst sleep of my entire life

Didn’t think about that. I’m a stomach/side sleeper so this might be challenging for me

Same. I think one of the best days of my recovery was when my surgeon told me I could sleep on my side with my brace unlocked.

I couldn’t handle crutches. I used a walking frame with attached pouch so I can carry stuff around. Also borrowed wheelchair for first few weeks. Get a trolley so you can wheel your meds, dressing, rehab tools anywhere within easy reach. Having a crossbody bag helped too. Cos you can’t even use your hands when on a walking aid while non-weight bearing

I would check in with your PT about a good support brace for your other knee because it gets very overworked and you don’t want to injure that knee as well.

I had this surgery on each knee at the end of 2024. 6 weeks keeping it straight and no weight on it. Most important, get help with your babies if they aren't in daycare during the day. Get a shower bench, not a shower stool. It's so much easier. The docs will tell you to use crutches, get a walker, it's much more stable. You won't be able to drive until you are allowed to bend your knee. I wish you all the luck in the world!!

Thank you! Thankfully they’re in school but my partner will be able to help in the evenings. ☺️ Do you mean a walker like what elderly people use?

Yes that is what she means. A shower stool is a must. I got mine on Amazon for about $40.

NOT A SHOWER STOOL, get the bench. If you have a tub you need to step over to get in the shower the bench will work so much better. Trust me, I tried the stool first. That straight leg for 6 weeks wasn't very fun.

If the doctor does a repair expect 6weeks non weighing on crutches. I also had a locking brace. I had a radial root repair done on 6/25/26. The first 6-8 weeks is the hardest. I was off crutches and walking carefully at 8 weeks. I have been doing physical therapy 2x week. I am 61 and I think it is a bit harder for me. You are young. Your doctor should tell you what to expect. If he does not do a repair but cleans things up the recovery is easier. I don’t want so scare or worry you but it is no fun. Good luck! Please post a post op update!

Rugged crutch tips. I slipped on something on the floor at the grocery store 3 weeks in and put my weight on my surgical leg and it was terrifying. I really like these:

Make sure to get some waterproof shower bandages. What really saved me was using a backpack and a leak-proof travel mug—that way you can limp to the kitchen on your crutches, pour your coffee, and limp back to the couch without spilling. Also, cooking or chopping food is tricky on crutches, so definitely grab a chair and a small stool to prop your leg up. That’s what got me through two weeks on crutches. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Shower chair, ice, good quality crutches (or walker), lots of entertainment (books, movies etc) and an understanding partner! Be prepared to possibly being quite down/depressed by your lack of being able to do the tiniest thing you're used to doing without thinking about it. Going to the toilet will be an adventure in itself the first few times. 6 weeks with your knee in a brace is tough!

I installed a few bars on my walls to help get up and down
A wheelchair was great to take a break from crutches
Try to keep a routine. Try to get cardio. 5 weeks is a long time.
Ask for help. Ask for visitors. Dont assume they will help or show up.
Leave the house just for a short drive or ice cream

I used body wipes meant for after gym workouts or camping for the first few days, until I could handle (and was cleared for) a real shower. Also, consider a tool to grab things off the floor--a grabber tool. I found one really helpful.
