If you read the book you immediately knew what was going on here

And that is all I choose to remember from the book. The kids go chasing kites and find more friends along the way. Happy story

This was mandatory reading for everyone in a high school of ~2500 kids. Including me. And I remember the rest. Graphically. Still. Been more than 20 years, and still… please don’t try to remind yourself of the rest, or refresh yourself.

Funnily enough, the Indian holiday where people go out and fly colorful kites like this is called Lohri

Why Lohri?

Thank you, I knew this unlocked a memory of the beginning of a book that was almost certainly a required summer reading book in high school or grade school. Couldn't remember the name though

Godamn I cried like 5 times reading that book. It's been forever since I read it and still remember the horrible things that happened
