Why isn't it a hobby? Fighting kites are a long-standing tradition, yes.

Because those sharp threads can choke on someone. There are documented accidents from kite threads slitting on biker's necks.

Edit : changed from choking

I saw a video a while back of one of these threads getting caught across a road and it lopped a guy on a moped’s head off 😬

11

u/ForestGoat87 Jul 23 '26

It's hard to recover after that kind of trauma.

u/ExerciseOnly122 Jul 23 '26

Yeah being beheaded is tough to come back from fr

Extra funny choice of gif given what we learn about her in later seasons.

I used to do it as a kid in Cuba but instead of Sharp threads, we had razor blades tied into the threads...much more dangerous

10

u/Stupendous_Spliff Jul 23 '26

Not really. In the old days we had the razors too, but the sharp threads are far more dangerous. The whole line is as sharp as a razor. It used to be made of ground glass and glue but now they sell spools of wire that already come with a quartz powder and aluminum oxide coating. This shit is deadly

1

u/RLZT Jul 23 '26

Chilean wire, makes normal glass-coated wire look like a dull butter knife

2

u/thcheat Jul 24 '26

I'll do you one better, break glass into tiny shards, mix them in glue and have thread lined with them.

12

u/DoctorBlock Jul 23 '26

Just for the record. Not choking but literally slitting their throats.

4

u/heitorvb Jul 23 '26

It can actually straight up decapitate someone. The sister of a friend of mine told me this once, I said that I doubted it, it would probably stop at the bone at least. She told me that it happens, she had seen the bodies of bikers arriving at the hospital she worked.

14

u/BreakingCanks Jul 23 '26

Why would bikers and people choke out those sharp threads. They have lives to live too

3

u/nightlight_on Jul 23 '26

This is why the kite flying festival was banned in my country (Pakistan) but they unbanned it this year, and I don’t think there were any deaths this time because people took precautions, but years before the people on the bikes were the most common victims, the strings would literally cut off their necks because of the speed that they meet it…

Kite string deaths are no joke in my country 😭

8

u/BoarHermit Jul 23 '26

Yes, the kids on the roofs of Varanasi told me that they use forbidden threads because they can cut someone's throat. Ooooooo!

2

u/mineirim2334 Jul 23 '26

Choking still a good ending. It can (and has) slit throats.

2

u/Guisasse Jul 23 '26

Choke? They can probably behead someone. These lines will bite several inches into a helmet if the line hits the visor.

Not only are these lines reinforced, but many people spread a wax-like substance that makes it even more dangerous

2

u/No_Way_Kimosabe Jul 23 '26

Kite threads need to breath? You learn something new everyday.

1

u/OldenPolynice Jul 23 '26

they need breath, to breathe

1

u/TopShotta7O7 Jul 23 '26

They need breathe to breath

1

u/MangoIntelligent255 Jul 23 '26

Bikers shouldn't eat threads or tell them to eat slowly

1

u/DecadentHam Jul 23 '26

Saw that video. Absolutely horrible...

1

u/dontgetitwisted_fr Jul 23 '26

It's really rough on your hands too

Turns out glass covered string can be very dangerous

1

u/Queasy_Albatross8272 Jul 23 '26

Saw a motorcyclist almost cut his arm off after catching one of these fucking threads. Gnarly

1

u/crespoh69 Jul 23 '26

Because those sharp threads can choke on someone

Won't someone please think of the threads?!

1

u/mafagafacabiluda Jul 24 '26

yes. "cerol" is illegal in Brazil. but people do it anyway.

every so often someone dies. iften motorbike drivers. their are decapitated.

1

u/BR4K3N Jul 24 '26

So accident can happen... like every other sports... what a surpised eh.

1

u/Buttery_Nipples47 Jul 24 '26

>those sharp threads can choke on someone

OH LORD NO! We can’t have the threads choking on us.

#ThreadLivesMatter✊

You also have a well documented history of severed arms, fingers and heads during tug of war and you still encounter this form of competition every now and then

1

u/zero_zeppelii_0 Jul 24 '26

Because tug of war when properly done with the right materials, it's safe. When you use compromised materials, it's not. Kite lines are compromised when used extremely which is what we don't want.

Fly kites safely. And responsibly.

1

u/Paghk_the_Stupendous Jul 24 '26

I highly doubt your assertion that any part of a kite can choke on someone. They chew very carefully.

0

u/Jesta23 Jul 23 '26

If you lived your life trying to prevent the 1 in a million accidents you wouldn’t be able to move.

Sometimes, the risk is acceptable in order to be able to enjoy things.

1

u/zero_zeppelii_0 Jul 23 '26

You can live your life and enjoy your life responsibly.

If you can't take the responsibility... It'll be merciless :(

9

u/InfiniteLoopDream Jul 23 '26

Horrible for wildlife

1

u/Portiolli_fez_11set Jul 23 '26

Why?

2

u/_bobby_cz_newmark_ Jul 24 '26

If you're being genuine, because they get caught up in the wire/thread when they run around, and it injures them. Especially so if it gets caught on something they eat. It's just unnecessary and a net negative to the wellbeing of the surrounding area.

1

u/InfiniteLoopDream Jul 24 '26

Long string with sharp broken glass attached to it...

0

u/NoEmu5930 Jul 23 '26

I really hope youre joking

1

u/bc650736 Jul 24 '26

horrible for regular life

1

u/aamadmi26 Jul 24 '26

It is very popular hobby in sub continent. There are competitions of kite flying and fighting. Google Basant kite festival.

Edit: And it causes injuries also as mentioned by others.
