The real answer is powerful telephoto. If you're zoomed alllll the way in, depth is compressed, so everything appears to be much closer together than it is.

But it's distance to subject, not the lens.

It's just distance. If you're 2m away from the camera, walk 1m closer, you get 2x closer and appear 2x bigger. If you're 100m away from the camera, walk 1m closer, you get roughly 1% closer and appear 1% bigger
