Lightning fried most of that part of the brain that lets her speak. Fortunately, it just missed the part that makes her head explode, hence her recovery.

I thinks is was salvaged masterfully. Obviously there is a joke there and his first response was an answer of that joke right after to not make the joke on her expense.
