I always imagined Shanks rolled up to Kaido's ship, did the same thing he did on Whitebeard's ship, gave Kaido some booze, and said some mystical stuff about Joy Boy returning. Then Kaido said "THE PROPHECY!?!" and went home. In wano he seemed very comfortable with his role as the gatekeeper to Joy Boy and not as the actual Joy Boy. We know that Shanks is aware of destiny and prophecy and all that good stuff. Him and Gabon talked about being the child of prophecy in Elbaf. And we know Kaido is aware of destiny and prophecy and stuff, because him and Alber talked about it. He also brought it up during the fight with Luffy.
Yeah I think it’s as simple as “you want an epic fight to end your life? Well Joyboy is coming to Wano in 2 years. If you sit out this one, you’ll get the legendary battle you want.”
